Island 512280 Reggae artist Bob Marley was, without a doubt, one of the most loved and influential singer/songwriters of contemporary music. This comprehensive 4-CD retrospective covers his long career with 75 songs, many of which are previously unreleased, and is a fitting companion to his earlier compilation, Legend.

A CONVERSATION WITH LEONARD COULSON

This year bas seen the 20th anniversary of the Deseret String Baud and banjoist Leonard Coulson bas been an integral part of that band for 19 of those 20 years. He bas also been the owner of Intermountain Guitar and Banjo equally as long, a «ore that offers sales and repairs of fiDe acoustic instruments, among other thinp.

I spoke with Leonard receatly about the Deseret String Band and their work performing and recording vintage tunes.

Your music has a sense of traditional arrangements, a capturing of the past that might otherwise disappear.

That's sort of the idea. The thing is, our idea of what a traditional arrangement is can only come from as far back as events and things that you can hear, like from early records. So, a lot of what we do and what our background is is playing the kind of music that was arranged for the recordings of the early 1920s when they first started making records.

Often we won't take the whole arrangement from a recording, only various parts of it. A baseline from a guitar that's the coolest thing in the cut might be the thing that we reproduce on a particular

instrument to get the right effect, but we may change the rest of it.

Several of the band members have scholarly backgrounds. Tom Carter has a background in folk architecture and Hal Cannon started a foiJclife center •.•

SMOKEY'S CORNER Season's Greetings, music lovers! With Christmas upon us (and snow

falling like mad as I write), I'd like to take this time to invite each and every one of you to come join us at our annual Christmas Party, to be held here at Smokey's Records on Sunday, December 13, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, besides other goodies, we!Jl be serving up some nice, warm vegetarian chili! So come on in and warm your ears {and your·tummies) while you celebrate with us! •

Now, on to the lists of new teleaks. ~ Some pretty good stuff has · come out recently; tqo much to list in one .; newslett~r, so alas, these lists are only · the "highlight" type. But there's something here to suit every taste, except, perhaps, those of you who are into World Music. And I can only comment here that we are continuing our stock expansion of many types of world music, every t¥ng from Portuguese Fado to Australian aborigine. Swing by or call to check it out.

Notice I've included a list of Chiistmas titles here for your perusal. You can assume that these are more or less (with one or two exceptions) favorites of yours' truly; and that out of the virtual plethora · of what's out there, these ~m my highest recommendations. Of the new Christmas titles, I have to admit that one of them really isn't new-~the New American Guitar Ensemble's Christmas Carols. This one has been consistently one of our best sellers in the Christmas genre for, years, like George Winston's December; but it is new to CD this year, 3!!d I suspect that many of you who have worn out those old LPs ofNAGE will be ovetjoyed.. Beyond that, although I

.' haven't heard the new Mason Williams' A Gift of Song, I have high expectations.

Lastly, if you can't make our Christmas party on December 13, I'd like to extend to all of you on behalf of myself and my cohorts here at Smokey's Records my sinc¢re thanks for continuing to support us in our continual efforts to be the best place around these parts for buying good music; and above all, to wish you a rewarding holiday season.

Dance Theater Sleeping Gypsy 3441

Tales is a collection of stories and folktales set to music and is composed and produced by Julie Mark and Maggie Beers for the Children's Dance Theatre, which has been the beneficiary of these women's talents for many years. Tales is a beautiful work, and includes a lively rendition of the Brothers Grimm story, "The Frog Prince," as well other entertaining traditional folk tales, some narrated and some sung. The beautiful "Elinda," based on a Estonian folktale is particularly enjoyable. Tales ranks as a major new release of children's music , but that shouldn't keep those of us grownups young at heart from enjoying the stories and the music.

LEONARD COULSON

(continued from page 1) Like Dixieland music or chamber music

from Italy 300 years qo, you're trying to create some sort of mood or sense of time. But I don't think we think about it in a scholarly way. I think we just start playing and eventually work out some way that we like it and we're pleased to present it.

We like to play. I think the thing that has kept us going all these years is that we like to come up with a set of music and then present it, if ()Dly for a short period, either on a tape or at a couple of concerts. It's new material that we then get to interpret in our own way and present.

Would you say the Deseret String Band is more of a serious hobby?

ORDERING INFORMATION

I don't think of it as a hobby, but certainly none of us play music for a living, although Ron probably depends more on it than the rest of us do. But we all have jobs and a variety of interests. As much as anythina, what keeps us together is we like each other. And if you don't keep at it, it gets too hard to do and then, after a while, it's agony. Of course, I don't want to be taken

advantage of when I play, but I don't really care if I get paid or not when I play anymore. I want the job to be something that either seems to be fun, worthwhile, interesting and if you get paid, great, and if you don't, that's okay too.
