It’s been 10 years, and I still re-member it. The awkward tension in the room as the crystal ball fell behind the backdrop of fluores-cent lights, illuminating the larger-than-life “2000” in Madison Square Garden. I was usually joyful and hopeful at the prospect of a new year and beginning, but that year, I felt apprehensive and unsure about the next decade — pretty strong emotions for a second grader. Why would anybody have such pessimistic feelings at the turn of the decade, and century? Maybe because the world was plagued with the fear of the Y2K bug. You know, the idea that the computers wouldn’t be able to switch dates, causing a global shutdown of the economy and life as we know it. We started the 2000s in fear and confusion, so where were we to find any optimism?

From then on, American spirit slowly crumbled. The lowest point would come in Sept. 2001, when we suffered the worst tragedy in our country’s history. We went to war in Afghanistan the same year, and it was soon erased from our minds, being overshadowed by a preemptive strike in Iraq in 2003. President George W. Bush prom-ised the American people that we would find weapons of mass destruction. Seven years and hun-dreds of billions of dollars later, we have found none. Thus, the decade declined, and it seemed the only thing that in-creased was the price of gas. We were struck in 2005 with Hurri-cane Katrina, which left New Or-leans in shambles, even to this day, and highlighted the government’s poor ability to solve its own do-mestic issues.

When the economy tanked in 2008, it finally was a wake-up call for America. It shook us to our core. For the first time, our parents realized that financial security is relative. Our uncontrolled spend-ing finally caught up to us. Togeth-er, we took a step back and realized that we could have done better. When I look back on the de-cade for a high point, only one date comes to my mind: Dec. 31, 2009. It was when I finally realized that it was over; it was time to start again. I hope that in 10 years, when I look back on this new decade, I have nothing but a sense of pride for my country and the world. What we have is a clean slate, a blank canvas. While we can’t tell how it will end, we hope that it will lead us to new opportunities and broadened horizons...

A decade, born amid fear and shrouded under its shadow, has adjourned. We’ve now begun a decade born out of optimism; yearning for tranquility. I can only hope, as we progress, we keep the past in the back of our minds as a reminder so that we may emerge from even the worst times. May we learn from our past..

Last Decade filled with turmoil, uncertainityThere was a lot of caution going into the 2000s, but that caution turned into panic with the September 11 Attacks. Many controversial decisons followed shaping our decade in history.

This past decade, our nation has persevered, regardless of the numerous obstacles thrown in our path. This issue of the paper is dedicated to the past decade, and the people who were a part of it. In it, you will find a timeline featuring significant moments in world, U.S., and Northwest history. We, the Northwest Passage staff, have spent the past few weeks reflecting on the past, and we’d like to invite you to do the same with our timeline.

A Supreme Court ruling elects George W. Bush as the 43rd president of the United States. Controversy erupted when Florida TV news networks reported that Al Gore had won Florida’s electoral votes, meaning that Gore had won the election, before the polls closed on Election Day. Later, they decided the outcome was close enough to require a recount. After the votes were recounted, Bush had about 300 more votes than Gore. Gore then requested another recount, this time by hand. The Supreme Court ruled that a re-count was unconstitutional and that Bush had won the election. This was the closest presidential election since 1876 and only the fourth election in U.S. history when the final result based on the electoral college votes didn’t reflect the popular vote. Gore actually had 543,895 more individual votes than President-elect Bush.

The Beatles 1 album is released; it is the biggest selling album of the decade.

aug. Lauren Bur becomes first girl in school history to compete on the football team

Students walking down the halls at the begin-ning of the 2000-01 may have been more

modestly clothed and wary of their actions than in previous years. A change in school infrastructure and policy over the summer resulted in big changes to student life. Resulting from multiple faculty requests, a new dress code prevent-ing the donning of halter-tops, tube tops, midriffs, spaghetti straps or backless shirts was implemented. And as a sug-gestion from a new district safety committee, 54 security cameras were installed to keep a watchful eye over the in-terior and exterior of the building. The camera on the west end of the building can zoom in nearly 300 yards, allowing officers to see into cars and view the entire parking lot.

After spending a night out on the football field, seniors Jeremy Foster, Faith Ford and Tracy Thau awaken. The boxes served as the only shelter for the 90 students who participated.

Religious extemists associated with terrorist group al-Qaeda hijack and crash four aircraft on U.S. soil. Two hit the World Trade Centers, one hits the Pentagon and the fourth crashes in Shanksville, Penn. In all, nearly 3,000 people died. This was the first attack on home soil by foreigners in almost 60 years. Later, al-Qaeda’s leader Osama Bin Laden claimed that his group organized and executed the attacks. The event leads to the reorganization of various U.S. defense agencies to become the Department of Homeland Security.

sept. 18 For several weeks, anthrax spores were found in letters mailed to news media offices and U.S. senators. Five people were killed and 17 others were infected.

spriNg Two teachers were fired for improper relations and actions. Environmental Education teacher Mike Eu-banks was dismissed after a sexual harassment complaint from a female student that resulted from a conversation in the classroom. Eubanks fought the decision hard, filing an appeal with the district, but he ultimately lost the case. “If [the district] wants somebody who can be a non-personality and absolutely perfect with everything they say then they need to hook students up to computers and not have teachers in the classroom,” Eubanks said in a 2001 interview.Physical Education teacher Kevin Zoellner was also fired after allegedly having improper sexual relations with two female students.

Bali bombings - Islamist terrorists bomb nightclubs in Bali, killing 202 people.

Legislature signed the proposal to cut $6.4 million from the Shawnee Mission School District, eliminating 8 teachers at Northwest, the highest amount for any school in the district. The budget ultimately affected elementary schools by disbanding all elementary counselors, the foreign lan-guage program, and cutting back nurse aid.

JAN. 1 The euro replaces the currencies of 12 of the European Union’s 15 members.

JAN. 29 A massive ice storm hit Kansas City, creating a layer of 2 inches of pure ice. It put over 420,000 businesses and homes out of power (some for as long as 12 days), blocked over 20,000 streets, and created about 1.6 million metric tons of tree debris. Total estimated damage for the 78 coun-ties hit in KS and MO was $119.5 million, and cleanup took over a month.

FEB. 28 Senior Blake Trullinger won state in wrestling after becoming the top seed. All other Cougar wres-tlers placed in the top eight.

MARCH NW girls’ basketball finished third at state, placing the highest at state of any team so far. The Lady Cougars also won the Sunflower League Title, and and became sub-state champions.

The “Wyandotte County tornado” ripped through Kansas and Missouri, killing at least 28, and damaging 1,000 buildings. It remained on the ground for about 90 minutes, the most devastat-ing tornado to come through the area since 1977.

A magnitude 9.3 earthquake hits off the west coast of Sumatra, an Indonesian island, resulting in a tsunami killing approximately 230,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other places along the Indian Ocean. The waves from the tsunami are up to 100 feet high. Approximately 1.7 million people are displaced from their homes, making the Boxing Day tsunami one of the largest natural disasters in recorded history.

Seniors Chastin Lollas and Shane Denton are attacked by approximately 12 men. Lollas and Denton both recovered from their wounds, but Lollas was in critical condition after receiving 19 or more stab wounds. Denton was able to escape with a concussion.

SEPT. A text message chain is created by students, encouraging others to participate in a protest of the new tardy policy. Hundreds of students show up late to school.

In November 2004, then government teacher Al Spungen was pulled over by a police officer for a traffic violation while

driving during his plan period. The officer smelled marijuana, and upon searching the car, found paraphernalia and presence of the drug. A debate over Spungen’s status as a teacher rocked the school in the coming weeks. A group of 20 students banded together to support him and argued that the teacher should be allowed to return to his position. FOX 4 news cameras appeared multiple times to interview students on air. However, the Board of Education eventually decided to fire Spungen. “I’m just sorry that this happened, and I’m really going to miss the kids,” Spungen said in a 2004 interview. “They’re why I live.”

Allyson was an advocate for Dream Factory and Children’s Miracle Network, and at one point traveled to Washington D.C. to lobby for more funding towards muscular and skeletal research. “If there was ever anything she could do to help somebody else, that was what she was going to do; that was what she wanted to concen-trate on, not her illness,” mother Pat Woodbury said. “She didn’t want to be looked at as the girl with cancer. She wanted to be a regular girl.”
