    Conne!ti!ut in 3636. n studying the #est 'ethods o& 'a"ing tools to 'anu&a!ture

    i'le'ents( he in%ented and #rought out two 'a!hines &or 'a"ing !arriage #olts.

     n the New /or" Coa!h-Ma"er8s Magazine( Mar!h 3656( age 343 we &ind the

    &ollowing des!rition9 :His &irst oeration was to !ut u #ars o& s,uare iron into suita#le

    lengths to &or' the intended #olts( then heating one end o& these ie!es( he rounded the'

    with die and swage whi!h were inserted into the 'ortise o& his an%il. The next oeration

    was to head these ie!es( and disdaining the old 'ethod o& the heading-tool( he e'loyed

    &or that urose an i'ro%ed dro-die. The surlus 'etal whi!h &or'ed around the head

    o& the #olt #y the dro he tri''ed o&& with a die in a hand-ress. Then with a win!h(

    whi!h !arried the ne!essary &ixtures uon one end o& a sha&t to whi!h it ga%e 'otion( the

     #olt #eing held in this &ixture( the threads were !ut #etween dies( whi!h were hinged at

    one end and had a weight atta!hed to the other to hold the' together with su&&i!ient

     ower to ena#le the die to !ut the thread.:

    when that was done a #oy !ould a!!o'lish 'ore and with greater ease than hal&-a-dozen'en !ould re%iously with the old &ixtures. t was a#out this ti'e that the turned head

    was introdu!ed( and( i& we are not 'ista"en( it was to !ir!u'%ent the atented ro!ess o& 

    the dro. The #olt-heads were headed with an aroriate tool( and the edges or sides

    were #e%eled( a#out &i&teen #lows o& the ha''er generally er&or'ing the oeration( and

    then they were inserted in the end o& a re%ol%ing 'andrel( held there #y a s!rew( and a
