A good friend recently introduced me to an expression she learned while waitressing back in her college days. If she was totally swamped, desperate to catch up with orders, she was “in the weeds.” I’ve never waited tables so I wasn’t familiar with the phrase, but now I find myself using it frequently, especially this time of year. Readers often are surprised to hear our busiest time of year at Laker Media is not the summer season but January through May. In addition to producing the magazine and Laker Weekly, our team is busy putting together several other publications for distribution throughout

the year, including our annual SML Map and the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce Community Guide. At the end of April, we’ll introduce Laker Out & About, a new, digest-sized publication highlighting dining, shopping and recreation opportunities at Smith Mountain Lake. Helpful for residents and visiting tourists, Out & About will be available in many area racks alongside the magazine and at the Laker Media office at Westlake Corner. For this issue of the Laker, our focus is on the area’s home-building industry. In additon to features on the latest building trends and a spectacular dock on the Blackwater, our annual Home Guide includes listings of area pros in 29 related categories. We also continue commemorating the magazine’s 10th anniversary with a look back at our 10 favorite Lake Homes features and a Q&A with long-time real estate developer Ron Willard.

Laker Real Estate made its debut in the April/May 2003 issue of the magazine. Located on the flip side, the section established a second cover and an opportunity for lake-area real estate professionals to showcase upscale homes and developments. The new format was a bit confusing at first to some, and we fielded numerous calls from readers wondering if we were aware that the the back of the magazine was “upside down.”

t Thanks to Josh “J-MO” Miller (right) of Moneta, the Laker rocked the Greenville, S.C., stop of Justin Bieber’s “My World Tour 2010-11” in December. Miller, a guitar technician for the teen pop star’s band, is pictured with guitartist and musical director Dan Kanter. In March and April, the group will make appearances in England, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Australia. “This is a great experience, to say the least,” said Miller. “Dan Kanter and JB are wonderful to work for.”

p Laos Dale and Pam Finn of Union Hall took the Laker along on an elephant ride last November while touring the Mekong River area in Luang Prabang, Laos. The Finns spent three weeks in Southeast Asia making stops in Cambodia, Singapore and Bali. “We were just fascinated with the history, the people and how they live as they have for centuries,” Pam said.

pMexico Union Hall’s Ted Sojourner poses in front of the Pyramid of the Moon at the ancient city of Teotihuacán, just northeast of Mexico City. Historians believe the pyramid, which is the third largest in the world, was constructed in A.D. 100. Sojourner’s November 2010 trip also included stops in Brazil and Colombia.

pBelgium Joanna Hudzik (left) and Harold Ingram, co-owners of Haywood’s Jewelers at Westlake, show off their Laker after completing a half-marathon in October in Brussels, Belgium. “The half-marathon was absolutely incredible,” Hudzik said. “It was awesome to see another country in a completely different way.” The pair was on an annual diamond-buying trip to Antwerp.

pColombia Carlos Cadavid of Moneta traveled last October to his native Medellin, Columbia, where he visited an outdoor gallery of works by Fernando Botero, one of the country’s most famous artists. Cadavid, pictured here in front of “Hombre a Caballo,” has lived in the United States since 1984 but enjoys several trips each year back to Colombia to visit friends and family.

Here’s a quick update on some issues that might affect you and your taxes.

CHECK THE RULES FOR DEDUCTING HOME-OFFICE EXPENSES

If you work at home, you’d probably like to take a tax deduction for your home office. Here’s an overview of

what qualifies. The first requirement is that you have a part of your home

that you use regularly and exclusively for business purposes. It doesn’t have to be a separate room, but it must be a clearly defined area. The exclusive use is very important. The area must be reserved only for business use; if you also use it for personal activities, it won’t qualify. The only exceptions are if you store business samples or inventory at home, or if you run a home daycare business. The other requirement is that your home office be any one of the following:

• Your principal place of business. That’s the place where you conduct most of the management and administrative activities of running your business. You may travel to meet customers or perform operations in a hospital, but your principal place of business is where you do most of the work of actually managing your business.

• A place where you regularly meet customers, clients, or patients. Even if you run the business from elsewhere, a home office can qualify if you regularly use it for meeting with customers, clients, or patients.

• A separate building that is not connected to your home. A freestanding garage or studio will qualify if it is used in your business.

If you have an area of your home that qualifies, you can generally deduct a percentage of your total costs, including mortgage interest, insurance, taxes, and utilities. The percentage is calculated as the area used for business divided by your home’s total area.

For the self-employed, home office deductions are limited to the net income of the business. An employee’s home office must be for the convenience of the employer, and this should be documented in writing.

Deductions for employees, other than mortgage interest and taxes, are available only to the extent they exceed 2% of adjusted gross income.

The rules on home offices are complex, with many gray areas. Please give me a call if you would like to discuss the above issues or for any other assistance concerning your individual and business accounting and tax needs; please feel free to contact me at (540) 297-4204.

10most memorable

The Laker celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, but it wasn’t until 2005 that the Lake Homes feature made its debut in the magazine. Over the years, the series has become a favorite with readers eager to get a look inside some of SML’s most beautiful and distinctive homes. The first Lake Homes feature ran in the July/August 2005 issue when, at the request of former publisher Micah Gaudio, I wrote about my own home – a castle-themed construction that was included on the SML Charity Home Tour that year. My husband, fellow freelance writer Jerry Hale, and I had the home designed and built on the Blackwater and were excited to share our story. The feedback we received from readers was overwhelming and soon Jerry and I were out on the water scouting for more intriguing homes to feature. In fact, most of the homes we’ve written about over the years have been ones we’ve noticed while out boating. Sometimes we see a compelling home on the lake and then scheme about how to meet its owners. Other times, the stories fall more easily into our

laps – like when friends Ron and Sheila Felix had a party where we met Ron and Colleen Toothman, their neighbors. The Toothmans live in the dramatic log home featured in the January/February 2008 issue. Another time, on a tight deadline, we drove around Park Place and spotted an especially lovely home. We went to the door and were greeted by Rick McKown, whom Jerry had met during a brief foray into poker a few years earlier. We were incredibly impressed that a 9,000-square-foot home could be finished by the homeowners in do-it-yourself fashion, and though the house still awaited finishing touches, we persuaded them to let the Laker tell their design and construction story in the November/December 2009 issue. The best part about writing the Lake Homes stories throughout the years definitely has been meeting (and often befriending) the homeowners. Back in 2006, Jerry and I saw a captivating oriental-themed house and dock from the water, but didn’t know who owned it. We later found the property by land and sheepishly knocked on the door. “Come on in, honey,” Dorothy Roth said as she reached for my hand. Thus began a wonderful friendship with Dorothy and Bob Roth, whose one-of-a-kind home I wrote about for the May/June issue that year. It has been such a pleasure to provide an inside look at some of the lake’s most fabulous homes. I hope you have enjoyed reading the stories as much as I have had writing them.

– Ferne Hale, Freelance Writer

P.S. If you have or know of a Smith Mountain Lake home you think would make a great feature, please e-mail the details to [email protected].

Our Home Tour preview visit to

“Chateau Neuf du Renard et Fougere”

generated lots of questions, and the

owners gave SMLaker.com readers the

answers. Why a castle here in Virginia?

Jerry: Why not? We were fascinated

by fortresses and castles during trips

to Europe. Ferne is a former French

teacher, so we’ve been in France a lot.

Guess we saw one too many chateaux

there! Actually, I lured her to southern

Virginia by making her think it was

southern France. Your house has a name? Weird.

Jerry: We had a piece of old wood

that was perfect for a sign, so my wife

painted a name on it. Ferne: Frankly, I don’t like houses

with names, but it sort of goes with our

concept. Medieval castles usually had

names. OK, French Teacher, translate the

name for us. Ferne: It means ‘New house of

Renard (Fox—my name for Jerry) and

Fougere (fern).” Where did you get the house design?

Jerry: We made it up — started by

drawing a bunch of circles on a napkin

to represent room arrangement. Ferne: I first looked at plans in

magazines, but when we didn’t see

anything we liked, we invented our

own. Did an architect draw it up?

Jerry: No. At the Delaware Home

Show we happened upon a company

called Drafting by Design that would do

building plans at one tenth the cost of an

architect. Ferne: It was great because we

could be part of the creative process.

They’d fax us drawings, we’d scribble

suggestions and fax them back, and

periodically we’d meet to discuss ideas.

We were very involved in the design.

When was it built? Jerry: It was finished in September

2003 after 13 months of rain and snow.

You name a truck—concrete, lumber,

shingles, even the moving van—it got

stuck on our muddy hill. We had bought

the lot a couple years earlier, after

vacationing at the Lake for 14 summers.

I got an early retirement opportunity

and started thinking, “It’s time to live

on SML.” Who built it? Ferne: Gene Butterfield, a really

creative guy. He was here hammering

nearly every day, and he even figured

out how to build a curved dungeon

stairway to the lower level. For months,

there was just a magazine photo we

tacked on the wall near a huge opening

in the floor, reminding him to “Make it

look like this.” Gene figured out how to

do it. We still love him. A stone entry tower with arrow-slit

windows, a drawbridge over a moat—

are we welcome to come inside?

Ferne: Wait, look at the crumbling

walls. See? It’s supposed to look like the

tower and old stone walls were here for

ages, and we just added a house to it.

Where did you get the rustic entry

door? Jerry: We met a furniture maker at a

party in Pennsylvania. He later became

our ‘Bob the Door Guy.’ He made the

entry door and several arched two-door

sets (for rooms and for a bar cabinet) out

of aged hemlock. We helped distress the

doors and moldings—using boards with

nails and screws poking through that

we’d drag against the wood. The big

strap hinges and old-world handles we

found on the internet and in catalogs.

Ferne: We brought the doors down

here on the roof of the car —several

trips. Bob came down twice to help

install them and add the trim. He even

camped on the dock with us—he loved

riding the Sea Doo. Dock camping

was great fun. The lake has wonderful

sounds at night. Wow. Some chandelier and curved

stairway! Did Gene build the stairs?

Ferne: No, we found the staircase on

the internet, though not quite as instantly

as it sounds. It was custom made by a

company in Wisconsin. It arrived in one

piece on a truck, and eight men—Gene’s

framing crew, Jerry, the electrician, the

plumber, etc., carried it in. Gene said he

didn’t sleep the night before it arrived

hoping it would fit the tower walls he’d

built. It did. Jerry: “We stumbled upon the

chandelier in a Pennsylvania antique

shop. They said it actually hung in a

French chateau; we lucked out on the

size—it fits!

John and Whitney BrockSeptember/October 2005

The story of John and Whitney Brock’s home in Park Place showcased the fusion of two businesses pursuits — he the builder and she the artist — throughout the home. Of particular note was the great room’s stunning barrel-vaulted ceiling, on which Whitney Brock spent eight weeks painting a mural comprised of scenes from Greek mythology. In 2009, the home was featured on the MTV show “Teen Cribs.” The family sold the home later that year. The Brocks now reside at Bernard’s Landing and will soon be moving to a home in Roanoke near Hunting Hills.

BROCKWORKS A year ago, when John and Whitney Brock were approached about featuring their new home in Park Place on the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, Oct. 7-9, 2005 seemed a long way away. Certainly it would be plenty of time to grout the tile, landscape the yard, build the bookshelves … the list went on and on. “There’s not a room in this house that’s finished,” said owner and fine artist Whitney Brock, pointing out uncompleted tile work in the master bathroom and exposed wires in the living room where custom bookshelves should be. “It’s going to be one of those up-to-the-last-minute things,” added her husband John, a custom home builder and the other half of Brockworks, Inc. “People think we’ve gone insane to do this, and they’re probably right.” For the Brocks, it’s their second time around the Home Tour block. Shortly after moving to the Lake, the Brock’s previous home was featured on the 1998 Home Tour. Both cited their past positive experience and opportunity to help raise funds for eight local charities as their reason for participating again. “It’s just run so well,” said Whitney. “We felt so well taken care of and respected. When the dust settled it seemed

like we had done so little. We’re just a venue for this organization to do such great things.” John Brock built the home, a 4,800 square-foot waterfront retreat decorated in a classic European style. It features textured walls, arched doorways and extensive woodwork. The focal point is the living room’s barrel ceiling, intricately painted with a medley of Greek mythology figures by Whitney, who is well known throughout the area for her faux finishes and stunning murals. The project took her eight weeks of back-breaking work, much of it spent on scaffolding. John and an electrician spent additional hours getting the lighting in the room just right, finally settling on uplighting installed within the trim, allowing the ceiling to glow softly at night “It’s really spectacular,” she said. “It was all worth it.” In addition to creating murals in homes throughout the region, Whitney has been commissioned by numerous businesses, including Community Hospital, Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea, Macados and Cuba Pete’s in Roanoke. “Murals are really where I find my happiness,” said Whitney, who also has a studio in downtown Roanoke where she’s trying to find more time to create fine artwork. A look back at our most memorableLake Homes stories of the past decade

From the lake, the home of Robert and Dorothy Roth resembles a Japanese castle with upturned roof eaves and stone walls that slant outward. A delicate Japanese garden bridge and an octagonal guest house complement the oriental theme. The story revealed that it was a Korean-style home, and that its owners had spent years of mission work in Korea. They later returned to Roanoke where Bob worked as a plastic surgeon before the couple retired to SML. The Roths continue to entertain church and civic groups in their dormitory-equipped home, built specifically to accommodate groups, including the Roanoke Sister Cities Board of Directors, to which they dedicate time and talent.

Far East MeetsSouthwest VirginiaPeace Pagodas on the Lake Cruising along the verdant shores of the Blackwater River near B-22, we were amazed to see a lakefront home that seemed to have come straight from the Far East. With up-swept gables and rooflines and outwardly slanting rock foundation walls, the Oriental-inspired house looks like a small-scale Kumamoto Castle. A separate pagoda-shaped guesthouse, a bridge arching gracefully over a stone-lined brook, a six-sided sunset-viewing gazebo over the water, and Oriental landscaping with azaleas, phlox, and low evergreens completed the serene shoreline mural — and told us that an Asian family MUST live here. Wrong! Though the house is distinctly Asian, the inhabitants are not. The owners, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Roth (they prefer Bob and Dot) are originally from New York City and Mississippi, respectively. Dot spent 20 years in Korea as a Methodist missionary who trained ministers in Christian education. Bob spent 12 years as a missionary surgeon at the United Christian Hospital in Wonju, Korea. In 1973, they settled in Roanoke, where he was a leading plastic surgeon for 22 years. Their home reflects their love of Korean people, customs and art; many of their treasured items were gifts from Korean friends.

The Korean house design, based in part on art books and calendar pictures, also had some “local” origins. Bob looked at (and measured!) the Kabuki Japanese steakhouse in Roanoke to guide his design of the slanted stone bases. When asked who could possibly have built such an Oriental wonder, he answered: “Randy Boone, a German Baptist. Show them a picture, and they can reproduce anything.” Actually, the Roths provided the builders with more than just a picture. Bob fashioned — and still displays in his study — an intricate ¼-inch to 1-foot scale model of the house out of foam board and medical cast-making plaster. It’s accurate right down to the sloping stone foundations and, under the removable roof, the dimensioned rooms and Korean-style lattice railings. The property’s name — “Peace Pagodas on the Lake” — reflects the Roths’ evident spirituality and interest in world harmony. Pagoda means “A storied stairway to Heaven,” evidenced by curved roof lines that point skyward. Inside the front door, visitors are greeted by a sign in Korean which translates, “Peace to All Who Enter Here.” In their gazebo, set out over the quiet Blackwater cove and perfectly placed for viewing sunsets, a plaque reads, “Peace is seeing a sunset and knowing Who to thank.”

Jerry and Janet PotterJuly/August 2006

Our 2004 boat rides into Gills Creek repeatedly took us past a Nantucket-style home with an eye-catching “widow’s walk” room up top. Jerry and I wondered how we’d get to meet the owners. The next year, when our own home was on the Charity Home Tour, Dick and Carol Berthel visited and disclosed that they owned the “widow’s walk” home. The following summer, as we motored past the home, we finally caught them on the dock and scored an invitation to come inside. The couple was happy to showcase the home in the Laker. Dick still lives there; Carol passed away in 2006.

On boat rides around Smith Mountain Lake, it’s fun to notice interesting architectural features on gazebos, docks and houses. A particularly captivating one on Gills Creek is a widow’s walk perched atop a new home in The Cape. Typical of Nantucket or coastal New England architecture, the widow’s walk — a small porch atop a home’s roof – provided a vantage point for a wife to watch for her husband’s returning whaling ship. However, homeowners Dick and Carol Berthel call this dominant house feature, visible from both Lake and driveway, a “crow’s nest” – a Navy term for a ship’s high lookout.

The color of the Berthels’ home is reminiscent of “New England” as well: misty sea green with bold white trim. Carol, an admitted color fanatic, said, “We first built the shed near the boat dock, and I painted it six times trying to get the color right.” Passersby often stop to ask the Berthels the name of the color. Sorry, they’re not telling. Dick Berthel, originally from Massachusetts, summered in Maine and New Hampshire and had childhood memories of “down east” architecture. Though his family moved to California when he was 8, the fond memories of summers at the family’s “camp” (cottage) in Maine sparked a desire to

WHIMSICALAT THE WATER’S EDGE

Janet and Jerry Potter have captured a bit of Disney magic in their new home at The Water’s Edge, which will be showcased in this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour.

Jerry and Janet Potter’s home at The Water’s Edge, a Home Tour stop in 2006, featured a lower level “main street” with a brick sidewalk, streetlamps, movie theater, soda shop, child’s playhouse, and bed-and-breakfast guest suite. Outside, an infinity pool seemed to flow from the deck right into the lake. In 2008, after their Greensboro, N.C.-based daughter and grandchild moved to Wisconsin, the Potters sold the home with plans to move there also. Plans changed, however, and the couple decided to build again in The Water’s Edge. They’ve since moved to four different houses — three rentals and their just-completed home.

TransformedWith a little help from their friends, Philip and Anne Lucado

completely remodeled their home at The Water’s Edge

people update or remodel a home, but those words don’t do justice to the renovation experienced by Philip and Anne Lucado.

Their story goes way beyond that – a total overhaul. The couple searched for the perfect home at Smith Mountain Lake with friend and real estate agent Vicki Millehan but just couldn’t find the right property. Then, one day, Millehan called. “There’s one home you’ve just got to see,” she said. The home had a spectacular view of the signature island green on the No. 7 hole of The Water’s Edge Country Club. But the rest of the home needed updating to suit the Lucado’s needs. The owners were selling the house because of declining health. Like many lake homes, it had two stories, a main floor

and a lower level. The house was designed to house two related families, one on each level. There were two kitchens, two living rooms, two laundries, two water systems, even two heating systems — one gas and one baseboard hot water. The two levels were connected but only by a narrow metal stairway curving around a pole in an enclosed hallway with a door at the top and bottom. Evidently, each family was expected to keep pretty much to its own area. It would take major work to make the home one-family-friendly and to suit the Lucados’ taste. Their long-time friend, interior designer Kris Willard, confirmed that the house had “good bones” (it was originally built by Dale Angle in 1994). The Lucados decided they were up to the challenge. They bought the property and hired Balzer and Associates Architects of Roanoke to help plan modifications.

Ron and Colleen ToothmanJanuary/February 2008

Although we’ve featured several remodels in the Lake Homes section throughout the years, the home of Phil and Anne Lucado in The Water’s Edge was the most remarkable transformation. Previously a two-family home, it was converted to accommodate the couple with several guest areas. There were changes to the entrance and the exterior roofline, and the entire interior was gutted, resulting in a beautiful home with exquisite finishing touches. Street-side landscaping underwent major changes, and modifications to the lake-side yard enhanced the terrific view of the golf course’s signature island green. “The only additions in the past two years have been an increased number of water toys for the enjoyment of friends and family,” Anne Lucado said.

Jerry and I were stunned when we first visited the log home of Ron and Colleen Toothman on the upper Roanoke near R47. The soaring log-beam construction was spectacular as were the one-of-a-kind furnishings acquired from the forced sale of a movie star who was breaking up with his wife. Breathtaking inside and out (there’s even a log boathouse), the home includes a dumbwaiter and an outdoor patio dining area with pizza-oven fireplace. Over the past three years, the Toothmans have enjoyed sharing the home with numerous guests and grandchildren. In fact, a wall-sized corkboard has been added in the downstairs great room to display guests’ lake photos. “The pictures provide great enjoyment as a reminder of precious family and friends who have shared special times with us at the lake,” Colleen Toothman said, “and we remember how truly blessed we are.”

Jim Erler and Catriona Tudor ErlerMay/June 2009

“Loblolly House,” the Erlers’ Arts and Crafts-style home, is one of the more distinctive homes that has been featured in the Laker. Jim Erler became enamored with the style while growing up in California near some of the country’s premier architectural examples. He now designs Arts and Crafts homes for others through his business, Erler Design, LLC. The couple’s lakeside stone patio, which was featured in a subsequent Laker story on fire pits, now includes an outdoor fountain that incorporates tiles designed by Ernest Batchelder, a craftsman who specializes in tile from the Arts & Crafts period (1860-1920). New indoor features include additional furniture and light fixtures from the period.

The Wilt/Campbell home, which was featured on the 2009 Home Tour, was memorable for a number of reasons. Owner Frederick Wilt, a retired computer programmer, wired the home for audio, video, lighting and music that can be operated via in-home touchpads, mobile phone or the Internet. The homeowners have added almost two acres to their property by purchasing the adjoining lot, which they then landscaped. It now acts as a buffer. In the future, they plan to build a carriage house on the property for additional guest quarters.

massive wooden beams and a sprawling lodgelike appearance, the Compass Cove home of Nancy Campbell and husband

Frederick Wilt has been known to turn heads. “During the construction phase [only 17 days to get the 8,500-square-foot home under roof], boats milled around in the cove to watch,” said Wilt. “Seeing several balconies, some people thought it might be a condo and asked, ‘How many units is it?’” Now, thanks to the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, the spectacular single-family home will be open for ticket holders to admire Oct. 2-3. Huge Douglas fir structural components, custom cut in Michigan, arrived with an experienced crew to join the pieces in a cathedral framework that supports the roof with no interior load-bearing walls. Factory-built insulated panels make up the roof, walls, insulation and window framing in sandwich-like slabs.

Campbell had seen timber-frame homes in her native New England and always admired the style. When house-plan books didn’t provide a desired floor plan, the couple decided to design the home themselves. Their attention to efficient design yielded the lowest cost per square foot of any home built by manufacturer Riverbend Timber Framing Company of Michigan. “We had the dock built right away,” Campbell said, “so we could use it for play while we were still renting condos.” The couple fell in love with Smith Mountain Lake while vacationing and bought their Compass Cove lot in 2003. Excavation began in January 2005. In 2006, with lake-level bedroom, bath and kitchen completed, they moved into the downstairs, at first retaining their home in Northern Virginia, which they sold in 2008.

Woodland Couple’s lake home inspired by passion

for Arts and Crafts tradition

By the dictionary definition, "loblolly" doesn’t sound like a place one would want to live — "a mire or mudhole." It certainly doesn’t reflect the grace and beauty of Loblolly House, an Arts and Crafts-style home perched high on a natural hillside on Witcher Creek near the Smith Mountain Dam. "[The name] comes from the Loblolly pines that occupy the piece of land. And I think it’s a fun name," said owner Jim Erler, who built the home in 2004-2005 with his wife, Catriona Tudor Erler, author and photographer of nine gardening books. The couple, who bought their first home on Smith Mountain Lake in 1991, originally planned the home as a spec house to sell for profit, Erler said. But while attending a convention on Arts and Crafts tradition – after home construction had already begun – Erler changed his mind and decided to fulfill a fervent

interest in the style that began when he was growing up outside Los Angeles. "What really happened to change my mind was, when I got into it, I discovered I had a real gift of a deeper understanding [of Arts and Crafts design] than I actually realized," said Erler, who designed and was general contractor for Loblolly House, though an architect assisted with the layout, exterior elevations and engineering. The Arts and Crafts movement (1860-1920) sought to escape industrialization and return to hand-crafted things of earlier, simpler times, Erler said. The English style was brought to America by architects Charles and Henry Greene, brothers who melded it with the American Craftsman movement and Japanese influences.

The Croom FamilyMay/June 2010

Rick and Pam MckownNovember/December 2009

This Lake Homes feature focused on how two couples —Ed and Gerry Croom and their son and daughter-in-law Tracy and Dana Croom — designed a lake home to live in together with one couple upstairs and one couple downstairs. They pooled their resources by selling homes in Florida, Roanoke and a lake cottage to start their project. Ed Croom served as general contractor while the other family members worked on finishing tasks: painting walls and woodwork, landscaping and building a dock to match the home. They’ve spent the year since the article ran enjoying their new home and making future plans, which include enclosing the dock’s ceiling, building a cupola on the dock and the garage and adding a design to the concrete walkways.

Featuring the 9,000-square-foot do-it-yourself home of Pam and Rick McKown required a bit of arm twisting. “We’re not done yet,” Rick McKown protested. The couple ultimately allowed a photo shoot only if the photographer agreed to avoid several unfinished areas. In the year and a half since, Rick has built bookcases flanking the great room fireplace; closed in the ceiling under the deck with tongue-and-groove wood and installed five columns over the deck’s steel support posts; painted the main staircase and railings and built a pantry in the mudroom. Next, he plans to finish the office in all-cherry wood with a coffered ceiling, full fireplace and mantle. The couple is nine years into the project they refer to as “our 20-year plan.”

Put a halt to deer damage by planting new hybrid shrubsSambucus Black Lace Distributed by Proven Winners, a company dedicated to seeking out and marketing plants that have been tested to perform well in most parts of the country, the Black Lace elderberry shrub is indeed a winner. The purple-black, feathery foliage is a good substitute for Japanese maples, and sets off the pale pink saucer-sized flowers that open in spring. Shiny black berries grace the plant in fall. Harvest them before the birds do and make elderberry wine or jam. Plant Black Lace in full sun in a space where it can grow to its full 8-foot height and width without pruning. You’ll be rewarded with a stellar specimen plant with a graceful, airy form in a striking color.

Rhus typhina Tiger Eyes Tiger Eyes is a spectacular version of the staghorn sumac with a long season of interest. The deeply cut, lacy leaves begin as a vivid chartreuse, maturing to a bright yellow that then morphs to scarlet-orange layered over yellow for a luminous show in autumn. Young twigs are a fuzzy deep pink that stand out in striking contrast to the yellow, fade-proof foliage. A dwarf variety, Tiger Eyes grows 6-8 feet tall and wide. For the brightest foliage, grow it in full to partial sun in moist, well-drained soil. While it can be trained as a single-stemmed shrub or tree, it is prone to sucker, creating a small thicket of tall trunks. This characteristic makes it excellent for hill stabilization and as a cover for birds and wildlife.

Syringa Bloomerang Purple Aptly named, the Bloomerang Purple lilac flowers profusely with its lavender-purple blossoms in spring, takes a rest during

the summer heat, and then makes a comeback in autumn, continuing its fragrant floral display until frost. A compact, mounded shrub that achieves a 5-foot height and width at maturity, it has good resistance to powdery mildew, a problem that plagues many lilacs. It works well as a specimen plant, as part of a foundation grouping, in a perennial or mixed-shrub border and in containers. Feed with a slow-release fertilizer in early spring and remove spent blooms to encourage reblooming.

Buddleia Lo & Behold ‘Blue Chip’ Butterflies and hummingbirds love Buddleia Lo & Behold ‘Blue Chip’ and so will you. Another excellent Proven Winners introduction, this is a dwarf butterfly bush that stays under 3 feet tall in a mounding form. It starts producing fragrant, purple flowers in mid-summer and continues blooming non-stop until first frost. It needs neither pruning nor deadheading, and is prized for its drought resistance. Use it in containers, as a ground cover, a low hedge, or as a component of a perennial border. Plant it in full sun in soil with good drainage.

Hibiscus syriacus Lil’ Kim Another perpetual bloomer that attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, the Lil’ Kim Rose-of-Sharon is a knockout. A miniature that is supposed to top out at 3-4 feet, in my Smith Mountain Lake garden it grew closer to 8 feet tall. The 3-inch pure white flowers are accented with a bright red eye, and persist for three days before falling instead of the typical one-day flower cycle of most Rose-of-Sharons. If needed, prune in late winter or early spring, and feed with shrub fertilizer in early spring for best flower performance.

FAR LEFT Sambucus Black Lace features deeply cut, almost black foliage. In spring, pale pink, saucer-sized flowers add extra allure.

ABOVE AND LEFT Rhus typhina Tiger Eyes (Tiger Eyes sumac) thrives in a container or planted directly in the ground.

More to tryLoropetalum chinensis ‘Purple Diamond’ One of the new dwarf Chinese fringe flower shrubs, ‘Purple Diamond’ matures at about 5 feet tall and wide in a mounding form with arching branches. The intense purple foliage of this evergreen shrub stands out in the garden, giving year-round interest. A member of the witch hazel family, in spring it is heavy with pink fringe-like blooms that stand out in pleasing contrast to the deep purple foliage. Flowers continue to appear sporadically throughout the summer and into autumn. An easy-to-grow plant in the right spot, choose an area with partial shade in fertile, slightly acidic soil. It makes an excellent background to bold perennials and annuals, is a gorgeous accent mixed with other ornamental shrubs, and works well as a foundation planting or in a container.

10questions with

When it comes to development at Smith Mountain Lake – commercial and residential – no one’s influence has been more significant than that of Ron Willard. A native of the Scruggs area of Franklin County, Willard started a small construction company in 1973, just seven years after the lake reached full pond. He has spent the past 38 years building the business into The Willard Companies, a multi-faceted enterprise that includes three country clubs, a real estate company and the area’s largest commercial development, Westlake Towne Center. Willard employs more than 200 people in the region, including two of his three children. Ron Willard II, who joined the company in 1992, is vice president and runs many of the day-to-day operations. Lee Willard came on board in 2010 as vice president of Corporate Holdings. Ron Willard’s family also includes his wife of 10 years, Kris Willard, who owns and operates Interiors by Kris, daughter Kim Waters and four grandchildren. Willard, 65, has been a strong community advocate through his work with the W.E. Skelton 4-H Center, SML Regional Chamber of Commerce, Ferrum College and numerous other organizations. He was instrumental in bringing a branch of the Franklin County Library to Westlake and said he hopes to do the same for a proposed multi-million dollar arts complex.

It’s difficult to imagine what the area would look like today without Willard’s contributions. So, as the magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2011, we thought it was time to get his take on the past, present and future of Smith Mountain Lake.

- Andie Gibson, Editor

Did you envision the lake as a tremendous development opportunity from the very start of your career?

A: In one of my first jobs working for a contractor in Danville, I would visit other lakes – Lake Norman (N.C.), Lake Wiley (S.C.), Lake Lanier (Ga.) – and I would see what was going on there. Snoop shopping has been a big part of my career. I would see what was going on in those areas and knew it was something we could bring to our community. Of course, there was a lot that we weren’t ready for. We had to wait until the clock ticked. But I knew if I got the amount of money together that it would take that the lake would be a great draw for retirees. For Smith Mountain Lake to have success, the community had to have a place to get together and socialize. I knew if we gave them the activities they desired, they would be willing to pay for it. So, yes, I could see that.

Q:

Page 32: Smith Mountain Laker Magazine Mar/Apr 2011

3 2 March • April 2011 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Q: In what ways do you think you’ve changed?

A: At 28 years old when I started, I was all about doing what I wanted in my career and taking care of my family. Then it got to the point where I was successful enough that I was concerned with taking care of my employees and the community. Today, I work because I want to take care of them and keep the community thriving and getting better every year. … It’s not just about my family. Today, it’s a much broader thought process. It’s about putting my arms around the whole community.

Q: What’s been the most rewarding part of your career?

A: The satisfaction I get from making others happy and comfortable. I can’t believe the number of people I’ve sold real estate to over the years who have come back four or five years later and say, “Ron we’ve got to move on. There’s no healthcare, no assisted living center, things we’re going to need in our later years.” Now, they have that. I get letters and cards from people who say how much they appreciate my efforts, and that’s nice. I have the best job in the world, and I have the hardest job, too. I get all the glory, but I also catch all the hell.

Q: How has it been working with your children?

A: When [oldest son] Ron came in, it was like I had a second pair of eyes. Now it’s like that again with [youngest son] Lee. It’s allowed me to step back and play more, have more fun. … I’m really not concerned about handing over the reigns to Ron and Lee because their ethics and attention to detail are beyond compare. And I think their ability to deal with people is better than mine because they wear their generosity on their sleeves. Their knowledge of technology is also what is helping drive the company forward.

Q: Will you ever retire?

A: In my case, my name is attached to these communities. It’s important to the people who live here. Believe it or not, I never want to stop doing the things I do for my employees and the community. I would never think of retiring because of that. I do look forward to being semi-retired and having more free time. And I will always be available to serve as a sounding board for the boys.

Q: What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about you?

A: I’ve always said that when I hear someone say something bad about me, it’s for one of two reasons. Envy, or because I didn’t do something for them that they wanted me to do – maybe because it was unethical. Certainly someone who’s in a position like me is never going to win a popularity contest. … My enemies don’t have to like me, but I want them to respect me for what I’ve done for the community and for my employees. And if they respect me, they’ll learn to like me. I think if some of those people would get to know me, they’d change their impression.

Q: You pulled back on some planned development right before the economy started to slide in 2008. What factors indicated to you that we were headed for recession?

A: I’m convinced that the recession we’re living in today is because of 9/11 and the inability of our government not to be able to control its pocketbook. … What really happened, though, were the elections in 2006. That was a real turning point in Congress – when Democrats took over and stalemated George W. [Bush]. They handicapped him the last two years of his term. It is political war that drove us to this recession. There’s been no work done politically to keep or make jobs. … What I don’t think people will forget about this recession is the importance of having a job and giving it your best shot because you want to be the last one standing, not the first to fall.

Ron Willard is the only person to grace the Laker cover more than once in the past 10 years, including his first appearance for the April/May 2002 issue. For the February/March 2005 cover, he was part of a caricature collage of influential Lakers that included developer Ed Waters, Franklin County Supervisor Russ Johnson, SML Regional Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Gardner and Dave Cappellari, owner of Capps Home Building Center.

Q: What are your predictions for the lake in the next 10 years?A: Over the next 10 years, the development and construction will go green because it’s an important way of preserving energy and providing a better way for families to live comfortably. I think commercial development will be very slow to recover because we’ve overdone it. Key locations are the ones that will survive. … The residential market will come back starting this summer, but where it was [pre-recession] will not happen in the next decade. Maybe 80 percent is the best it can come back to.

Q: What are your plans for the future? A: If people who live here will shop at home and keep spending their dollars here, Smith Mountain Lake will keep rolling on. We can continue to improve services if people continue to patronize the things we already have. Hopefully, I’m going to spend my next 10 years impressing that upon people.

One advantage of the building information modeling (BIM) technology used by John Brock of Brockworks, Inc. (right) is it allows homeowners to better visualize how a room will look when complete. The home of Rick and Debbie Cocrane, under construction in Park Place, will feature a see-through fireplace separating the kitchen and living room. Brock used BIM to show the Cochranes two choices of how the fireplace could be finished (main image and lower right). Brock also inserted a photo into the software that depicts the home’s lake view.

CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGYHome builders and remodelers can peer into the future

and see how a project will look when completed thanks to the 3-D modeling services offered by John Brock of Brock-Works, Inc.

Referred to in the industry as BIM (building information modeling), the technology lets Brock show customers exactly what they’ll be living in based on the architectural drawings and materials specifications. Software translates blueprints into completed and decorated rooms, which customers can “walk through” on the large monitor in his office (or iPad at the job site), viewing details such as moldings, paint colors, flooring and countertop choices. Pictures on the wall, reflec-tions in mirrors and even views through windows using ac-tual background images are visible on the screen.

“And the system generates building materials lists that al-

low us to more precisely estimate and update costs than ever before,” Brock said. “We get a 3-D walk-through rendering, but by adding cost and timeline dimensions, it really becomes ‘5-D.’

“A homeowner’s cost for using the visualization technology is easily recovered in reduced change orders and improved building efficiency along the way,” he said.

Brock has used the software from the start for Rick and Deb-bie Cocrane’s new home in Park Place, slated for completion in May.

“It’s a tremendous tool for taking risk and surprises out of the building process,” Rick Cocrane said. “It’s much easier to make the right choices when you can see a virtual representa-tion of the finished product and have a precise cost associated with each alternative.”

WHAT’S COOKING?

“Remodelers are adding wine cellars, mantles, bookcases, entertainment centers, bars and billiard rooms — projects that can be enjoyed with family and friends. Lyptus, considered a ‘green’ wood due to its 10-year sprig-to-harvest cycle, finishes up much like mahogany and is very popular.” – Stephen Boggs, DeNeal’s Cabinets, Moneta

“I absolutely love my touch-sensitive faucet. You can turn it on and off with your elbow or chin when your hands are full, wet or gooey. It’s great,” – Nollie Morris, Union Hall homeowner

“Drawer-style microwaves are really catching on. They avoid the bulky cupboard under-hang – or worse, cumbersome countertop models – found in older kitchens. And kitchens aren’t just kitchens any more. They are multi-use living spaces, large enough for group cooking, studying and informal socializing.” – Les Kuhn, Kitchens at the Lake, Moneta

KITCHEN CONVENIENCES

In kitchens, Stephen Boggs of DeNeal’s Cabinets said customers are opting for innovations such as bump-to-open trash cabinets with

sorting bins for recyclables, cool-burning LED lighting and soft-close drawers and cabinets.

Kitchens by Connie owner Blair Graninger said she has noticed definite trends in what people are requesting in their designs.

"We’re seeing multiple colors used in cabinetry — mixed woods, stains and paints — plus granite patterns on islands that differ from the main-run countertops," Graninger said. "And, of course, kitchens are just one focal point of a large, integrated family food preparation/dining/TV-watching/homemaker office area. A hidden ‘drop zone’ for purses, messages, mail and charging electronics is popular, as are multi-bin recycling cabinets.

"People are also going for simpler trim moldings, door styles and door/drawer hardware — avoiding dust-catching complexity," Graninger added. "And space utilization is paramount: They want functional storage tucked into every nook and cranny."

Splinters Splendor

When it comes to spending time at Smith Mountain Lake, Deitz and Terry Lilly certainly have their priorities in order.

One of the first things the couple set out to do when they purchased their home on the

Blackwater in April 2009 was rip out the dingy, splintery dock built in the 1970s and replace it with a fresh, fun party dock to entertain family and friends.

There are no obstructed views here. Because the home sits astride two waterfront lots along 298 feet of shoreline, the Lillys were permitted to build a second dock farther into the cove to accommodate two boat slips and a slip for two personal watercraft.

“This is ideal because it gives us plenty of space to entertain on the party dock, yet the boats and the storage shed are at the other dock,” said Terry Lilly.

Deitz Lilly, an SML and Lynchburg builder, was out on his docks with tool belt and power tools almost every weekend for nearly four months completing the projects.

“[Local dock builder] Mike Dillon set the poles, but my son, Brent [28] and I and one of our employees did the rest – the party dock first and then the boat dock,” Lilly said, explaining that he saved considerable money by using a dozen of the dock’s original poles. “Mike added some new ones then drove all the pilings for the second dock.”

Lilly installed new floor joists and topped them with EverGrain composite decking. The siding used to frame in the poles and dock house was painted a beachy blue.

“I love decorating,” said Terry Lilly, who plans to have the beige house painted the same color. “And this color is fresh and fun.”

And while the two-dock setup is perfect for entertaining, what makes this project spectacular is Deitz Lilly’s attention to detail, including a coffered ceiling that is so beautiful it looks like it belongs in an indoor room. It is made of beadboard and trim constructed of environmentally friendly engineered wood. Suspended from the ceiling are three tropical-looking rattan fans. The bar top, which Lilly

also built of waterproof materials, features a striking patina of copper. Each dock’s roof sports a cupola: a mermaid atop the party dock and a flying pig on the boat dock.

“At the lake, pigs do fly,” joked Terry Lilly. To accommodate guests, the party dock

is furnished with high tables, bar stools and numerous other tables, including one made from a crab trap. There are cushioned chairs, rocking chairs and even a super-sized lounge for reclining. The look is one of comfort and relaxation.

Terry Lilly’s love of Caribbean style is evident on the dock. There’s a wacky wine rack, several large flamingos (screwed to the dock to prevent them from flying away in the wind), and several Margaritaville signs. However, her favorite dock item “has to be the bear,” she said, referring to a 5-foot-tall polar bear, wearing a grass skirt holding a tray of drinks, purchased at The Cottage Gate.

As the warm weather approaches, the couple said they plan to take full advantage of their new two-dock setup.

“It’s just such a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere down there being right on the lake,” Terry Lilly said. “We’re just looking forward to relaxing and enjoying family and friends.”

Lower utility bills. Recent high performance homes completed by PD&M have been independently verified to save our clients 40% on average on their total utility bills. This results in savings of thousands of dollars yearly for our clients.

Improved indoor air quality. Through the use of an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) and other advanced construction methods our homes have a significantly higher indoor air quality than a conventionally stick built home. What this means for you is a quieter home with significantly less indoor air pollutants which will make living in your new home much more enjoyable for years to come.

Improved resale value. We don’t think you’ll ever want to sell your home but if that time comes you can be confident that potential clients will be attracted to your high performance home and the associated cost savings you’ll be able to pass on to them

PD&M has been building homes at Smith Mountain Lake for 28 years and is the area’s only certified builder to consistently build Gold Certified homes. In fact, we have just been nominated as EarthCraft Builder of the Year. Contact us today to find out how PD&M can build you a quieter, more comfortable home with better indoor air quality, less maintenance and a lower overall cost of ownership.

Lake resident and avid golfer Tony Montgomery met up with a few buddies on a chilly afternoon recently to play Miami’s TPC Blue Monster on one of the restaurant’s two high-definition golf simulators. “I thought it was pretty cool, especially since we couldn’t play outside,” Montgomery said. “The clubs were pretty close as far as the yardages you usually hit, and the scenery and graphics were all really good.” Each simulator projects realistic images of some of the world’s most renowned golf courses on a 10-by-15-foot screen. Players, who choose from 18 different layouts or a variety of golf-related games, can bring their own clubs or use the ones available at the restaurant. The cost is $35 per hour regardless of the number of people playing, and Ryan Drake, chief operating officer, said most people can play 18 holes in an hour. “Pebble [Beach] is definitely the one of the first courses everyone wants to play,” he said. “Casa de Campo, PGA National, Bethpage Black and Pinehurst [No. 2] are also popular.” Drake gave up his job as a sales trainer to start the venture with his mom, Sharon Landi, a retired health care executive. Husband Brett Landi handles the finances and niece Danielle Gawronski manages the restaurant, which opened last October. The reception from the lake community has exceeded the family’s expectations. “We expected the people who golf to love it,” Gawronski said, “but we didn’t expect it to be such a big hit with non-golfers. It’s something everyone can do.” The restaurant takes tee times just like a regular golf course, Drake said. Leagues for 9-hole and 18-hole play have formed for weekday play and several local golf professionals offer indoor lessons. “The golf pros come in and love it,” Landi said. “The simulator breaks down and analyzes club speed, spine angle of the body, all sorts of things.” In addition to the simulators, the restaurant features eight 42-inch flat-screen TVs that show a variety of sporting events. Customers can listen to the game of their choice on tabletop speakers that broadcast the audio to whatever channel they’re watching. The simulators also can be turned into HD TVs to broadcast big events such as the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Clockwise from top, family members Ryan Drake, Sharon Landi and Danielle Gawronski operate Beyond the Green; a cozy sitting area is popular with customers looking to utilize the restaurant’s free wi-fi; a golf ball teed up at the simulator; the sampler platter includes four appetizer favorites.

The restaurant serves traditional pub-style food, including appetizers, salads, burgers and a variety of sandwiches. The full-service bar offers a wide selection of beverages. Local real estate agent Audrey Agee tried Beyond the Green for the first time recently and said she’ll definitely return. “The food was really good,” she said. “I had the [Greek] portabella salad and hot wings. I loved the salad. … It’s a different concept. It gives our visitors as well as the local people something new and unique.” Beyond the Green can accommodate

65 people and plans are already in the works to build an outdoor seating area for the warmer months, said Drake who would also like to market the restaurant for corporate events. “People can eat and play team-building exercises on the simulator,” he said. “It’s great for PowerPoint presentations because we can have 40 people fit around a big screen and everyone can see it.” Live music is scheduled nearly every Friday night and some Saturdays. “We started bringing in bands because customers kept asking,” Gawronski said. “It’s been a big hit.”

From top, hosts Christi and Tim Basham; the lake makes the perfect back drop for party guest to show off their Derby Day hats. Back row from left: Karen Maydian, Dana Montgomery, Andrea Fansler, Teresa Shelton, Lori O’Connell, Jennifer Chaconas, Shannon Gaudio. Sitting: Karen Cromwell, Christi Basham, Whitney Cappellari. hristi and Tim Basham began throwing Kentucky Derby parties at their Smith Mountain Lake home seven years ago. “Tim and I actually went to both the [Kentucky] Oaks and the Derby one year with friends,” Christi

Basham said. “We have had a party of our own ever since.” The Derby takes place the first Saturday of May each year, so if you’re inclined to throw your own party, there’s still plenty of time to put together a traditional menu, festive decorations and fun games.

Derby Fare When planning a Kentucky Derby menu, tradition is of the utmost importance. After all, the race dates back to 1875. If this is your first time in the Derby party saddle, consider providing a few traditional food favorites and asking guests to fill in the gaps with appetizers and side dishes. One customary menu item is Kentucky Burgoo, a stew made with several meats and vegetables. Burgoo is an ideal beginner recipe as it can be made days in advance and served casually in small cups or bowls. Cucumber tea sandwiches also are easy Derby favorites. Be sure to prepare these just before your party so the bread doesn’t get soggy. For the main course, consider making any type of grilled steak with Henry Bain sauce, a sweet and spicy concoction named after its creator. Traditionally, the sauce would be served over “gamey” meats, but steaks can easily be substituted. Serve them alongside mesclun greens tossed with a light vinaigrette. For dessert, traditional favorites include Derby pie (made with chocolate and pecans) and bourbon balls, both easy options.

Cocktail Time Mint Juleps are a must for any Kentucky Derby party. And while the drink has been synonymous with the Run for the Roses for decades, it was just 20 years ago that the Early Times Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail was named the Official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby. To make your own version, follow this recipe from kentuckyderby.com:

Early Times Mint Julep •2cupssugar •2cupswater •Sprigsoffreshmint •Crushedice •EarlyTimesKentuckyWhisky

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with 6-8 sprigs of fresh mint. Refrigerate overnight. Make one drink at a time by filling a traditional silver julep cup with crushed ice, adding 1 tablespoon mint syrup and 2 ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Decorations Embrace the elegant side of this event with fresh-cut flowers, pastel or white tablecloths, and fine dishes and glassware. You can also hang a wreath of roses on your front door to welcome friends. Basham said she hangs a large banner that reads “Derby Party,” and orders coordinating plates, napkins and cups with a Derby theme. Be sure to arrange enough seating around your television as this is where guests will congregate.

Just for Fun While the stakes at Churchill Downs are high, the ones at your party can be modest (or just for fun) if you plan a Derby pool. The Bashams put the names of all participating horses in a hat and guests draw them out at random. “We watch on a huge TV,” Christi Basham said. “Everyone is standing, yelling for their horse to win. It’s very exciting.” IfyouhostorknowknowofsomeonewhohostsaparticularlyfestiveorunusualpartyatSmithMountainLake,wewanttohearaboutit!E-mail the details to [email protected].
