editor’sJanuary/February 2012note

My husband and I were married nearly 17 years ago on a picture-perfect summer day at Smith Mountain Lake. Like many brides and grooms, Chris and I chose SML for its natural beauty and proximity to family and friends. For many of our out-of-town guests, the weekend doubled as a mini vacation with time spent boating, fishing and relaxing on the dock. In recent years, the concept of a destination wedding has grown tremendously and SML has become a hotspot for couples looking to take advantage of all the lake area has to offer. In our 2012 Wedding

Guide, which starts on Page 46, we profile several out-of-town couples (including one bride and groom living on opposite coasts) who chose to tie the knot at Smith Mountain Lake. The guide also includes a handy list of area businesses to help couples find everything they need for the big day. Speaking of big, this issue also features the winners of our 2012 Best of SML Awards (Page 39). Readers voted in record numbers for the 11th annual awards, which highlight the best of business, food and drink and lifestyle happenings at the lake. Thank you to all who voted and congratulations to the winners. Other can’t-miss features in this issue include a profile on Laker Bruce Stritesky who spends many Sundays not on the water, but on the football field as an NFL official; Spirits columnist Gordon Kendall’s ideas for libations to warm you from the inside out; and our annual Lodging Guide to help you plan your next trip to SML. The Laker staff is busy planning for the March/April magazine, our annual Home & Garden issue. If you have story ideas or are interested in advertising, please contact us prior to Jan. 27.

TAX SMARTSTAX SMARTS

Age MAtters In the tAx LAw

Many tax provisions are linked to age, so whenever

there’s a birthday in the family, check for changes your tax

planning should take into account. Some of the major tax

milestones include the following:

AGE .. WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR TAXES.

13 ... Beginning at this age, your child no longer qualifies for the child care credit.

17 ... From this age on, your son or daughter no longer qualifies for the child tax credit (different from the child care credit, above).

18 ... When your child reaches this age, his or her Coverdell education savings account is not permitted to accept new contributions.

18 ... Beginning at this age, you must pay social security taxes for any of your children that you employ in an unincorporated business.

19 ... Is your child a full-time student? Unless you answer “yes,” you could lose the dependency deduction once your child reaches this age.

24 ... Upon reaching this age, none of your child’s investment income will be taxed at your rate under the “kiddie tax” rules.

30 ... By this age any amount remaining in your child’s Coverdell education savings account must be distributed or rolled over to an education savings account for another qualifying family member.

59½ .. You may start withdrawing money from your IRA, 401(k), and other retirement plans without penalty.

65 ... Beginning at this age, you generally qualify for a higher standard deduction.

65 ... Also at this age, low-income seniors may qualify for a special tax credit.

70½ .. You must start withdrawing at least the minimum amount from your IRA each year, or you face a stiff penalty. (This requirement doesn’t apply to Roth IRAs.

Please give me a call if you would like to discuss the above issue or for any other assistance concerning your individual and business accounting and tax needs; please feel free to contact me at (540) 297-4204.

On summer weekends, a steady stream of boats can often be found cruising past the home of Gil and Anne McGeorge on the Blackwater River Channel. Granted, the reason is

usually because the McGeorge residence is located next door to what is generally considered Smith Mountain Lake’s most famous house – the cottage used in the filming of the 1980’s movie “What About Bob?”

However, what the curious boaters might not realize is that, while they’re busy snapping photos of the house made famous by Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss, they’re missing out on seeing a home with star power all its own.

Like many couples, the McGeorges took their time finding the perfect retirement spot on Smith

Mountain Lake. They had owned two smaller homes at the lake but were ready for something bigger and more permanent. For months, they spent weekends casually house hunting, but when one of them loved a home, the other didn’t.

Then, in the spring of 2009, the McGeorges’ real estate agent showed them what they jokingly referred to as “The Ponderosa” – and it was love at first site for both.

“We built one home and remodeled another, and we weren’t anxious to do that again,” said Anne McGeorge, noting that one attractive aspect of the home was it was in move-in ready condition. In addition, every room, except the bathrooms, faced the lake, which they found appealing.

The home’s style is definitely western/mountain with a slightly rustic feel, but it is completely

modern with new appliances, granite countertops and a sophisticated whole-house music system. The 3,500-square-foot main level includes a master suite; another 1,500 square feet upstairs features three guest bedrooms and two baths.

Upon entering the home, one is greeted by a carved and painted Balinese house protector, complete with protruding fangs.

“He supposedly protects the place and brings good luck,” said Anne, who bought the piece on the couple’s honeymoon in Bali, Indonesia. It sits in front of a stone wall in the entryway that is the back side of the fireplace in the den.

“We call it the den because living room just seems too formal for us,” Anne said.

With big windows opening up to a long view up the Blackwater, cozy fireplace, comfy furniture and a TV, the room is attractive and livable – a favorite place for the couple to spend time. Adjacent to the den is the dining room, which features an oversized Western-style table and chairs crafted from hefty logs that came with the house.

The kitchen has plenty of space for cooking and socializing, due in part to a large island. The McGeorges remodeled the adjacent laundry room to double as a butler’s pantry by adding a utility sink, an extra dishwasher and additional granite countertops.

“When having a large party, it’s great to whisk all the dirty dishes to this separate room, out of sight

of all who gather in the kitchen,” said Anne. “That’s an idea I got from [interior designer] Kris Willard.”

A lake-facing eating area off the kitchen has a built-in dining set, which continues the log theme on a smaller scale. The McGeorges converted the former pantry into a temperature-controlled wine room to hold 1,000 bottles.

“We’ve been small collectors of wine,” Gil said.A double office with two desks, each with

lake view, suits Gil, a retired CFO of Roanoke’s Associated Asphalt, and Anne who is managing partner of healthcare for Grant Thornton, based in Charlotte.

The largest room in the house, which Gil refers to as “the party room,” still seems cozy because of its grass-cloth-covered walls and plush furniture surrounding a large coffee table. It has a wet bar, an area for playing cards and a 63-inch TV used primarily for watching sporting events.

“When we bought the home [in June 2009] from the second owners, it was decorated with woodsy dark green and coral colors. Kris [Willard] helped us lighten up the walls and window treatments to give it a more contemporary/artsy lake-house look,” said Anne.

In the master suite, renovation included reconfiguring the entrance to the bathroom and closet, creating a long wall to position the couple’s bed opposite the lake windows.

Another favorite area of the property is the dock, which the McGeorges use as an outdoor room. They converted the previous owners’ four-slip dock to have one boat slip and one slip with a lift for two personal watercraft. The other two slips were filled in with flooring to provide an additional sitting area.

Gil has roots in the lake area: his father was from Bedford County, and his mother was one of 13 children in the Brooks family of Franklin County for whom Brooks Mill Road is named. Gil said he remembers seeing Hales Ford Bridge being built and wondering if the water would ever really fill up to be right below it.

“Anne and I are both from Virginia,” he said. “She grew up in Norfolk and I was born and raised in Roanoke. We love the activities the lake offers and the many, many friends we’ve made here. We hope to always maintain a presence at Smith Mountain Lake.”

50BEAUTIFULDEER-RESISTANTPLANTSRuth Rogers Clausen, Photography by Alan L. Detrick.Timber Press, Portland, Oregon, 2011. 253 pp. Publisher’s price, paperback: $19.95.

What’s not to love about a book with this title, especially considering the proliferation of deer at SML? One of the best ways to come to a truce with garden dining deer is to choose plants they are less likely to eat. Here’s your reference material. A “quick look” feature for each of the 50 listed plants gives you the USDA hardiness zones, plant height and spread, and a ranking of its deer resistance. The cultural information and design tips are complemented by Alan Detrick’s excellent photography. Fill your garden with these plants and the deer will likely go elsewhere for lunch.

This is the time of year when

gardeners at Smith Mountain Lake

and beyond daydream and plan

for the upcoming growing season.

It’s also the time when a comfortable chair

next to a roaring fire and a good book that

draws you in and engages your mind and

spirit are welcome amenities.

Following are my recommendations for

excellent garden reference books to both

educate and inspire as well as information on

a garden trilogy written by Beverley Nichols, a

master British wordsmith and humorist.

GREENISBEAUTIFULSMALLGREENROOFS:LOW-TECHOPTIONSFORGREENERLIVINGNigel Dunnett, Dusty Gedge, John Little, and Edmund C. Snodgrass.Timber Press, Portland, Oregon, 2011. 256 pp. Publisher’s price, paperback: $24.95.

Green or living roofs aren’t just for large, institutional buildings. As more people recognize the environmental benefits of living roofs, including water conservation, energy savings and storm water management, homeowners are creating them on a smaller scale. Whether for a small garden shed or the roof of your home or garage, Small Green Roofs is a valuable source book for information on the nuts and bolts of designing and planting a living roof, as well as an inspirational resource for ideas.

CONTAINERCONFIDENTIALTHEVEGETABLEGARDENER’SCONTAINERBIBLEEdward C. Smith.Storey Publishing, North Adams, Massachusetts, 2011. 263 pp. Publisher’s price, paperback: $19.95.

You want a few homegrown, organic vegetables, but you don’t want to commit your life at the lake to hoeing, weeding, feeding and watering a vegetable patch (and then compete with deer for the harvest). The Vegetable Gardener’s Container Bible may be the answer. As the name suggests, this “Bible” answers any question you might have about growing vegetables in containers, and some you may not have thought of but are glad to know the answer. Useful topics covered in the book include succession planting in containers, winter protection to extend the growing season, ornamental herb and vegetable plant combinations, self watering and recommendations for specific hybrids that are well suited to contained growing conditions. Next summer, I expect to see lots of produce growing on docks!

CONTINUOUSCONTAINERGARDENSSara Begg Townsend and Roanne Robbins. Storey Publishing, North Adams, Massachusetts, 2010. 271 pp. Publisher’s price, paperback: $19.95.

It’s not difficult to create containers brimming with flowers in the summer. But what about one by the front door that arrests your interest in all seasons, including winter? For design ideas, plant recommendations, tips and inspiring photographs, turn to Continuous Container Gardens, a beautifully illustrated, informative book that will inspire you to extend the working season for the containers in your garden.

THEALLWAYSTRILOGY:DOWN THE GARDEN PATH, A THATCHEDROOF,ANDAVILLAGEINAVALLEYBeverley Nichols. Timber Press, Portland, Oregon, 2005. 295 pp, 289 pp, and 292 pp. respectively. Publisher’s price, hardcover: $24.95 each.

Reading Beverly Nichols is like gliding along a smooth road through gentle, rolling scenery with a witty, articulate companion by your side. While his words appear to flow with an obvious natural grace and wit, in fact Nichols labored over everything he wrote, editing and honing the text to bring it to perfection. Readers are the happy beneficiaries of that toil. In the Allways trilogy, you’ll share the joys and triumphs he experienced creating a garden for his thatched country cottage in a village in Cambridgeshire, England. You’ll meet quirky villagers, and the bane of his life, Mrs. M. Describing one effort to avoid becoming engaged in a conversation with Mrs. M., Nichols writes, “I averted my eyes from her, and drew from my pocket a piece of paper on which I pretended to make notes. I did not wish to make notes, and actually I wrote only the word ‘William’ over and over again. But I wrote it very firmly, frowning as I did so, in the hope that Mrs. M. would go away.” Can we not all relate?

NATIVEINTELLIGENCENATIVETREESFORNORTHAMERICANLANDSCAPESGuy Sternbert with Jim Wilson. Timber Press, Portland, Oregon, 2004. 552 pp. Publisher’s price, hardcover: $59.95.

To help become better acquainted with the wealth of native trees growing at Smith Mountain Lake, and to find suitable trees to grace your own landscape, seek out Native Trees for North American Landscapes, a beautifully illustrated volume that presents comprehensive descriptions of more than 650 tree genera and species as well as helpful cultivation information. The final pages feature a tree selection guide for conditions such as seasonally wet soils, dry soils, hot or cold climates, shade, as well as features including good autumn color, floral interest and berries. It’s a helpful reference you’ll return to repeatedly.

DIRR’SENCYCLOPEDIAOFTREESANDSHRUBSMichael Dirr. Timber Press, Portland, Oregon, 2011. 952 pp.Publisher’s price, hardcover: $79.95

Weighing in at 8 pounds, this comprehensive encyclopedia is the gold standard for reference books on trees, shrubs and other woody plants. A master plantsman who has worked in horticulture for almost 40 years and introduced more than 40 cultivars, Michael Dirr’s knowledge is first hand; you know you can trust what you read. Both the writing style and the information are compelling. More than 3,500 full-color photographs help for plant identification and recognition. This is an important and valuable book, truly Michael Dirr’s magnum opus, and well worth the price.

Our sense of pride and commitment to quality is apparent in every home we build.

Bruce Stritesky wears a lot of hats. There’s his

US Airways pilot’s cap and his NFL official’s

cap. But perhaps his favorite is whatever cap is

Comfortable in the wild blue yonder or making big calls in huge NFL stadiums, Bruce Stritesky has long been most at home on Smith Mountain Lake’s serene waters. The Roanoke native was a lake

regular as a kid, and he bought his first property here in 1982, just three years out of high school.

“There’s something about being on the water that’s just peaceful,” said Stritesky, echoing a feeling Lakers know well. “I like just looking at the water, having a cup of coffee. It’s so tranquil, especially in the mornings.”

Stritesky can use that peaceful feeling. For a good portion of the year, Sundays have a whole different aura, when he works around the country calling football games in front of screaming fans.

shorelines | PROFILE

“You get chill bumps on the back of your neck when the crowd gets into it,” he said. “Some of these stadiums get pretty loud, and it’s a lot of fun.”

Beyond working his way to the top of the officiating profession, the soft-spoken Stritesky has certainly earned those tranquil mornings on the lake. While he may seem, and certainly considers himself, a fortunate man, like many so blessed, success didn’t find Stritesky: he actively pursued it.

Just two weeks out of Northside High School, Stitesky cleared himself for take-off out of Roanoke, heading to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., to train as a pilot. He had been flying since he was 13 and fondly remembers heading out to Roanoke’s old Woodrum Field on Sundays after church to watch planes come and go.

“I just knew that’s what I wanted to do, and it’s amazing what you can do if you want something,” he said with a laugh.

In 1981, Stritesky accepted a job with Piedmont Airlines back home in Roanoke and soon teamed up with a fellow pilot to buy a townhome at The Waterfront, another goal achieved early. He married

his longtime sweetheart at Halesford Baptist Church in Wirtz and, after he bought out his partner’s share of the townhome, he and Teresa would live at the lake for 10 years.

When the couple adopted two children – Sawyer, now 16, and Jacob, 15 – in 1998, they moved back to Roanoke but kept their links to the lake, the boys growing up on the water much like their dad. These days, if he’s not towing his sons on inflatables, Stritesky has the boat anchored somewhere secluded, the family swimming and sunning.

Stritesky has had some moments in the sun as an official, too, particularly in 2005 when he called the Gator Bowl in January, NFL Europe’s World Bowl in June and the Conference USA championship game in December. NFL officiating supervisors have chosen him to work four playoff games in his 5 years in the league.

Stritesky first began looking for a way to reconnect with football in the late 1980s. He had played on the offensive line for legendary Northside coach Jim Hickam, and by 1988, Stritesky wanted back into the game in some capacity.

He thought about coaching, but the demands of the job wouldn’t fit with his airline schedule. A friend suggested officiating and it turned out his parents knew Harry Bushkar, who headed up Virginia high school officials at the time. After a brief meeting with the veteran referee, Stritesky was officiating a scrimmage the following week. He soon had a steady schedule of recreational Pee Wee games, sometimes as many as six in a row on Saturdays.

By 1990, Stritesky had his first high school varsity assignment and went on to become a fixture on Friday nights around the region. Another Roanoker, long-time official Dan Wooldridge, took notice and hired him to call college games in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

When Wooldridge moved up to supervise officials in the Big East Conference in 1996, Stritesky was hired there, too, reaching the top of amateur football.

“I loved the challenge,” Stritesky said of officiating. “It’s kind of like golf. No matter what, you’re never

“I just knew that what I wanted to do, and it’s amazing what you can do if you want something.”

going to have a perfect game but that’s what you’re striving for. You want to get better each time you’re out there.”

Meanwhile, NFL scouts were scouting Stritesky and his cohorts on Saturdays to see if they might be successful on Sundays. Stritesky was invited to work in NFL Europe in 2000 where he got to see a good part of the world. In 2006, he got the call to join the NFL ranks, where he now works as an umpire.

Stritesky made the call to sell his first lakefront property in 2005, upgrading to a newer condo in the same community. Now he has another piece of land on the Bedford side of the lake where he hopes to build his retirement home.

However, that’s still a ways off. Stritesky doesn’t have a retirement hat yet.

DESTIN ATION

A wedding is one of the most anticipated events of life. Brides and grooms plan for months to make sure

their special day creates the memory of a lifetime – and not just for themselves. Ensuring family and friends have a fabulous experience is also a priority for couples, which is why many from across the country are choosing Smith Mountain Lake as their preferred wedding location.

Holly Sweet, who heads up marketing and events at Mariners Landing Resort and Conference Center, said the number of out-of-town couples desiring an SML wedding is definitely on the rise.

“We have noticed an increase in couples choosing Smith Mountain Lake for their destination wedding,” said Sweet. “The SML views are an amazing wedding backdrop, but the central location of Smith Mountain Lake seems to appeal to couples with guests traveling from various cities and states. Plus, it appeals to the guests since they can incorporate a vacation into their visit as well.”

Lori Phillips, event coordinator at Bernard’s Landing Resort and Conference Center, said Smith Mountain Lake is often a happy medium for couples and their guests.

“Anyone would love to get married on an exotic island like Jamaica, but it’s difficult to get everyone there and [requires guests] to spend money on airfare and such,” Phillips said. “SML is easier on the bank account and still makes you feel [like you’re] away from home.”

This year, the Laker’s Wedding Guide includes stories on three out-of-state couples who chose Smith Mountain Lake to celebrate love’s big moment. And, starting on Page 54, is our annual directory of local vendors of wedding-related products and services.

Newlyweds Ashley and Jeff Volpenhein may cheer for rival baseball teams, but it didn’t take long for the couple to become fans of each other.

“We met at a restaurant bar in Charlotte where we were each out with a friend and sat at adjacent tables,” Ashley Volpenhein said. “We kept making eye contact, and then began talking about the Red Sox-Yankees game that was on at the time. He was cheering for the Yankees and I am a big Red Sox fan, so I had to comment.”

The Kansas natives, who both migrated to Charlotte for jobs after college, had already scouted Smith Mountain Lake as a potential wedding site before they even became engaged.

“I grew up coming to SML with my family, and it was the first place Jeff and I traveled to together when we started dating,” Ashley said. “He immediately loved the lake, too, and we would try to visit as often as possible. I always said, ‘How awesome would it be to get married here?’”

During their visits, the couple would often boat past The Water’s Edge Country Club, taking in the sight of lush fairways and golfers on the signature No. 7 island green.

“Jeff loves golf. We both love all that SML has to offer, and when we heard about the renovated chapel on the golf course, we knew that was our dream place to get married,” said Ashley.

Last August, just more than 200 wedding guests traveled to SML to share the couple’s big day.

“We wanted to maintain a simple and classy style for our wedding,” Ashley said. “The Water’s Edge clubhouse was a perfect place for the reception. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful sunset over the 18th green and dancing the night away. Jeff and I left the reception by boat and spent our first night at the LoveStone Inn.”

Smith Mountain Lake definitely made an impression on the wedding attendees, Ashley said. With the help of resources provided by the couple, guests were able to enjoy the lake’s many amenities.

“We made a guest booklet suggesting local attractions and restaurants to try in the area,” Ashley said. “We provided a map of the area and directions to key venues within a gift bag to help with the logistics, though we supplied the transportation to and from The Water’s Edge for the wedding and reception so that guests would not have to drive unfamiliar roads at night.”

On the big day, the bride said everything worked out perfectly.

“It was such a fun weekend for everyone. We still have guests telling us how it was the best wedding weekend ever. We would definitely recommend a destination wedding at SML,” she said.

ABOVE Clockwise from top, bride Ashley LaPorte and her new husband, Michael (third from right), celebrate with members of their wedding party at Bernard’s Landing; the couple’s rings; tables at the outdoor reception complement the color scheme with green and black linens.

A part-time job at a Washington, D.C.-area Target store turned out to be the beginning of something special for Ashley and Michael LaPorte.

“Michael was training me for the job,” Ashley said. “We hit it off right away and started dating three days later. We’ve been together ever since. It was love at first sight.”

Though Ashley’s family moved to Alabama shortly after the couple began dating, the two reunited in Virginia, continuing their relationship while Ashley was a student at Radford University. Both are fond of the water, frequenting North Carolina’s Outer Banks with his family during their courtship. However, a single visit to Smith Mountain Lake was all it took for the couple to become smitten with a different water destination.

“We had been to SML once with his family,” said Ashley. “It was midway between where we were living at the time and where they were in Washington, D.C., so we decided it was the perfect place to spend the day. Once we got engaged, we knew we wanted an outdoor spot by the water. Smith Mountain Lake was absolutely perfect.”

Last August, the couple wed at a waterfront ceremony at Bernard’s Landing Resort and

Conference Center. LaPorte described their traditional wedding as beautiful and meaningful.

“I walked down the aisle with my dad to a string quartet playing ‘The Wedding March.’ We had a unity sand ceremony and gave roses to each of our mothers at the end. The vibe of the reception was classically beautiful. … We watched the sun go down and there was a full moon. It was such a beautiful, magical night,” she said.

LaPorte made sure all aspects of the event were fun and relaxing for the 50 wedding guests. She chose Mango’s Bar and Grill for the rehearsal dinner where friends and family were able to enjoy live music as well as the entertainment and shopping options at Bridgewater Plaza.

“Having a destination wedding for my guests was exciting because they got to travel to a new place, and it was sort of like a mini-vacation,” Ashley said. “They got to hang out at the lake, swim and just have a great time, even after the wedding was over.”

“We watched the sun go down and there was a full moon. It was such a beautiful, magical night.” Ashley LaPorte

Washington residents Christy and Karl Krispin prove love can sur-vive across many miles.

“I was living in New York City at the time Karl and I met,” said

Christy Krispin. “I was on a business trip to Seattle and met friends for breakfast before going home. When I arrived, my friends were chatting with another friend of theirs who happened to be there. That friend was Karl. We kept up a long-distance relationship for eight months.”

The courtship led to a proposal in the Snoqualmie area of Washington in January 2010. Since both bride and groom have connections to Smith Mountain Lake, it wasn’t long before the area was singled out as the wedding location.

“I grew up in Roanoke, and we knew we wanted to get married in that area,” said Christy. “Karl’s older brother worked for Dawn Spencer in Chicago, who later moved to Smith Mountain Lake and bought the LoveStone Inn. She invited us to have the wedding there.”

A description of the venue convinced the couple SML was the perfect place for their nuptials. The bride and groom said their vows last May beneath the LoveStone Inn’s lakeside pergola.

“We wanted it to be a worship service and a family-and-friends affair,” Christy said. “We sang hymns. Ten of our closest friends served communion and we invited any young girls attending the wedding to be our flower girls. We had 12 flower girls total.

Between our two families, we had five clergymen performing different roles in the ceremony.”

Approximately 200 guests from all parts of the country arrived at Smith Mountain Lake for the occasion.

“A lot of my friends made travel plans from Seattle and New York,” Christy said. “Some stayed at Mariners Landing, some rented houses, some stayed in a campground. A lot of them spent the whole weekend at SML and had a good time. Every person who came said they loved the venue.”

The bride, who lived in Seattle during planning, said she relied heavily on SML business owners to make sure all went according to plan. Even the companies that catered the rehearsal dinner and reception were able to accommodate her request to use humanely-raised chicken and fish – a conviction important to the couple.

“It was a perfect day; the happiest day of my life,” she said.

As Honorio Zaragoza practiced the art of cooking Mexican cuisine while managing an El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant in Roanoke for 18 years, he became occupied with

entrepreneurial inspiration. “At most Mexican places around here, everyone

has the same menu and nothing has changed since 20 or 30 years ago. I grew up around Mexican cooking and [those restaurants] are not serving the real food you would find in Mexico,” he said.

What Zaragoza decided was missing was authenticity. Two years ago, he decided to do something about it.

“While I was working in Roanoke, I wanted to open up a small Mexican restaurant where the cooking was more authentic. I couldn’t do it there very easily, so I decided to come out to Smith Mountain Lake to do it,” he said.

In 2008, a regular customer at the restaurant Zaragoza managed at the time suggested putting a few miles between his new establishment and the

popular spots in Roanoke. One of the owners of Westlake Plaza, Charlie Tooley, a fan of Zaragoza’s service at El Rodeo, was planning a major renovation of the 22-year-old shopping center. He told Zaragoza it was the perfect time to create a new Mexican place in the heart of the Westlake community.

“He came to me about putting a restaurant here,” said Zaragoza. “He told me he would have to fix the place up, but that was okay with me because then I could fix it up the way I wanted it to be. The renovation took about a year.”

Though the building was undergoing remodeling, Cancun Mexican Restaurant & Grill began serving the public almost immediately. Only recently did the eatery receive its final touches.

“We stayed open during the renovation but sometimes people would have to sit here through hammering and construction going on. Thank God we have great customers; they were understanding,” said Zaragoza.

The owner/chef, along with his wife, brother and other family members, serve their customers with the

same commitment to authenticity that first inspired the venture. For Zaragoza, culinary shortcuts used in the restaurants he worked for in the past have no place in the kitchen at Cancun.

“Here, we marinate our beef in a special marinade. Most places won’t do that because it takes longer and is more expensive. Maybe they used to do it, but they don’t anymore,” he said. “We also have much more variety.”

Zaragoza’s efforts have earned the restaurant a growing fan base.

“Mexican food has so much variety and that’s what I wanted to offer here. My customers do notice the difference. One lady, it was her first time here and she had our chili rellenos. She said, ‘You know, I love Mexican food and I love chili rellenos. These are the best chili rellenos I have ever had.’ The reason is because we make chili rellenos the way they make them in Mexico,” he said.

Zaragoza pays attention to what his customers want and like. As he chats with diners, he hears frequent comments about real Mexican flavor and picks up on the favorite dishes of his regular customers.

Charlottesville resident Kate O’Brien drops by Cancun while visiting family at the lake. She said she and her husband found the restaurant while scouting a place to watch soccer games on TV.

“I really like it. We’ve been here a few times, but today we came here for the soccer and free Wi-Fi, and they have been extremely accommodating. The food is good too,” she said.

“When the remodeling started and they took down the sign for a while, people thought we were closed and that hurt us a little bit. But now we have everything together, the new sign is up and people are coming again and telling others that we’re here. Business is picking up,” he said.

Smith Mountain Lake is known as a summertime paradise offering all manner of exciting water sports,\ tasty foods and refreshing cocktails. Once winter starts to exert its chill over the area, some folks

migrate to warmer climates. However, many hearty souls who call the lake home year-round know how to warm up with a toasty beverage intended to knock the chill off a frosty nose.

What makes for the perfect drink on a blustery lake day? Some local restaurant owners and bartenders think a dark beer produced with copious amount of heavily-roasted malted barley fits the bill. Others recommend warming martinis or customized concoctions made from a variety of liqueurs. And, of course, there’s always the wintertime standard: Irish coffee.

Tiffany Silva, co-owner of The Landing Restaurant and Bruno’s GastroPub, rotates her draft beer selection to reflect the vicissitudes of the season. Winter selections include items such as milk stout and high-gravity ales with amplified alcohol content. High-gravity ales are brewed using up to two or three times as much malt as a standard beer. During the brewing process, fermentable sugars are extracted from the malt and the yeast converts the sugar to alcohol. More malt means more alcohol in the finished brew.

Craft brewers such as Michigan’s Founders and Delaware’s Dogfish Head ramp up the hop quotient accordingly, resulting in richly flavored beers with profound aromas and lingering hop bitterness on the palate. Milk stouts contain lactose, a milk sugar that cannot be fermented by beer yeast, so the brew has a rich, warming sweetness. While these beers are not what you would want to drink after mowing the lawn,

they are quite warming and satisfying on a cold winter night.

Bartender Matt Pruitt honed his skills at a martini bar in Phoenix that offers more than 200 varieties of the cocktail before joining the Silvas’ staff two years ago. He’s concocted a drink sure to warm from the inside out – a Peppermint Patty Martini composed of vodka, coconut and mint liqueurs and served in a glass with powdered chocolate dusted around the rim. He said customers also enjoy the Espresso Martini made with vanilla vodka, coffee liqueur and fresh espresso served warm in a coffee mug.

One of the most popular wintertime beverages is Irish coffee. The invention of this relatively recent concoction is generally attributed to Joseph Sheridan, a chef in western Ireland who devised the drink in the 1940s to warm shivering passengers who had just

completed a cold seaplane flight. Sheridan added Irish whiskey to hot coffee and carefully floated local Irish cream on top. A passenger asked if the drink was Brazilian coffee, but Sheridan informed him that it was Irish coffee. A few years later, Stanton Delaplane, a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle brought the beverage to the U.S. and popularized it by frequent references in his travel column.

Today, Irish coffee is the most popular wintertime drink at The Blackwater Café. John Gordon, the lake restaurant’s general manager, said he uses Seattle’s Best Coffee (regular or decaf) to improve the quality. Gordon said he also offers a Raspberry Truffle made with hot chocolate, Raspberry Schnapps and a warming chocolate liqueur.

Another popular winter drink at the restaurant is the Hot Scotch Cocoa, which is composed of butterscotch liqueur, hot chocolate and whipped cream. Gordon also recommends the Steaming

Toasted Almond, which contains Amaretto, Kahlua and coffee topped with whipped cream. The Blackwater also rotates its beers to feature seasonal selections such as Sam Adams Winter Lager, a rich and spicy brew.

Cindy Rexrode, who has tended bar at Jonathan’s Restaurant since it opened in 2009, said a customer favorite in the colder months is a Key Lime Pie Martini. The drink contains fresh Key limes, vanilla vodka and two secret ingredients I couldn’t persuade Rexrode to divulge. She also makes other fresh-fruit martinis, including the Pineapple Upside Down Cake, another customer favorite. Chocoholics will also want to try her Chocolate Martini, which is made up of four different chocolate liqueurs garnished with fresh chocolate shavings on top.

So Lakers, don’t go around cold this winter. Give one of these toasty libations a try and then, when summer rolls back around, you can switch back to frozen Margaritas and cold lager beer.
