    METAL CHAIN CONVEYER

    BRIEF H ISTORY O F M ODERN INVENTIONS

The modern chain pump is really different from the ancient one. They aredifferent in the form of energy the machine is powered, the purpose of thechain pump, the materials used to make the invention and even the users of this machine. Unlike the ancient Chinese Chain Pump, the modern chainpump is powered through electricity. During the olden times, the chain pumpis used to transfer earth, soil and water, but nowadays, it is used in factorieswhere items are transferred through a conveyer belt. It is also used inairports where it holds the luggage of the passengers in an aircraft. Theancient Chinese invention usually uses wood but nowadays, rubber is usedfor the outer coating while metal covers everything else. Even the name haschanged. The name of the modern chain pump is already called a conveyerbelt.

P ROCEDURES F OLLOWED INM ODIFYING O UR INVENTION

We could say this experience of

modifying an invention isdifficult, but we successfullypulled through. We started outresearching about our choseninvention, the chain pump. Wethoroughly studied theinvention. With our knowledge

on the invention, we were able to spot the weaknesses of the invention. Webelieve we have made good modifications. We had group discussions duringstudy period to help mix all our good modifications to make a great one. Wealso got some ideas from the science museum about perpetual motion.

Through this, we were able to make a source of power for our invention. Through these procedures, we were able to modify our invention.

CONCEPTS USED IN M ODIFYING THE INVENTIONWeaknesses Modifications Reasons

    PerpetualMotion

We learned the laws of gravity andkinds of energy . We learned perpetualmotion. Through this, we were able tothink of perpetual motion. Perpetualmotion is a motion that never stops. Itcontinues as long as there is gravitysince gravity pulls the water down andthus able to spin the mechanism.

(SCIENCE) Through our knowledge in Kinds andProperties of Materials , we will useplastic for this invention because plasticis light and is rust-proof, so more energywill be produced since more rotations areexpected and the material will lastlonger. (SCIENCE)

Water Wheel We enclosed it in a casing with anopening and closing so that more energywill be collected because more force willbe produced since there will be only oneentry of water and the force is

concentrated there. (SCIENCE) Using geometry in Math, we calculated

the circumference of our water wheeland decided to make it larger. Throughestimation , we were able to estimatethat more energy will be collectedbecause the wheel would be bigger.(MATH)

Using Kinds and Properties of Materials , we will use plastic so that itwill be light and will move faster, thus

gathering more energy. (SCIENC E)Componentsare made of weakmaterials(WOOD)

    Wood ischanged intoStainless Steel(or Dura-Aluminum)

We learned Kinds and Properties of Materials . Because of this, we know thatwood decays. So that our invention wouldnot decay, we changed the material fromwood into Stainless Steel which isntcompletely rust proof but compared toother metals, it has a cheap price andwill most likely rust 5-10 years afterbeing used. We can also use Dura-aluminum because it is cheap, light andrust-proof. (SCIENCE)

    degrees.

    needed to transfer the water.(SCIENCE/MATH)

We will make the angle of the chainpump 45 degrees so that less time will beneeded to transport the water from the

lower place to the higher place. (MATH)Heat andfriction willcause thewear andtear effectthus causingthe breakingof the chainpump.

Add a rubberbelt in themiddle part of the conveyer.

We learned Kinds and Properties of Materials , rubber is heat resistant, so if rubber is put between the chain pump, itwill absorb the heat created by thefriction of the two metals inside.(SCIENCE)

    CONCLUSIONS

We therefore conclude that through our modifications, we may help thepeople of the Philippines especially the farmers. Because through ourinvention, water is transferred more easily; through that more rice will beproduced because fields will be watered. More rice produced will meancheaper prices for every Filipino family. This will surely improve theeconomy of the Philippines.

    RECOMMENDATIONS

We recommend patenting our work.We recommend to submit our work to the DA (Department of Agriculture)and DOST (Department of Science and Technology)We recommend making a prototype to make further learning. We recommend to research more on the newer models to learn more of possible modifications. We recommend surveying farmers and giving model units to know whattheir comments are about our invention and through that learn morefrom our invention and make possible modifications. We recommend sending a letter to local governments to ask for theirsupport in our modified invention. We will also ask for monetaryassistance.
