Smiles and HopesAs time goes by, at the age of 45 years, World Vision Foundation of Thailand (WVFT) has worked to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable children in a changing social context. Because of new challenges arising daily, the Board of Directors, Senior Leadership Team, and staff of WVFT once again went back to basics and asked each other: Do children’s smiles alone truly signify their well-being? And we found that the answer is ‘No’.

The true well-being of all vulnerable children across Thailand that we are looking forward to happening is actually about how to empower them to fulfil their hopes for reaching a better life and self-reliance. The smiles must come along the hopes of the most vulnerable children.

Since 2018, WVFT has revised its implementation strategy to achieve child well-being by emphasising child age-appropriate development. Resources provided by World Vision International have been contextualised and adapted to fit Thailand’s quality of life development work that focuses on promoting holistic development – from early childhood, school age, and youth life skills– prioritising the most vulnerable children in Thailand.

Although the previous year’s implementation under the age-appropriate-development strategy has not become full-fledged, our dedicated efforts in 2018 resulted in 63,522 sponsored children who gained the quality of life development properly in accordance with their age. Our intensive work also positively impacted other 155,280 children who lived in the communities in which WVFT’s development projects served.

Taking into account all children, families, and community members benefitting from a range of quality of life development in different facets, smiles and hopes multiplied to more than 400,000 people.

After all, these smiles and hopes of the most vulnerable children across Thailand would never have happened without all of your support. I deeply thank all sponsors and donors for being part of our ministry to make children’s smiles and hopes possible.

God bless you.

Dr Sarawut RachasrimuangNational Director

Smiles and Happiness of Sufficiency FamilyRice is a major source of the diet of the nation. Sadly, the more Thai farmers invest in rice farming, the poorer they become because they rely on loans to pay for rice seeds, fertiliser, and pesticides but end up with greater debts as the profit from the crop can never pay off the debt principal and multiplying interests.

To empower families to secure sufficiency livelihood and readily provide for their children, the Child Sponsorship Programme has promoted poor families to have occupational development and sufficient household income that allows them to stand on their own feet.

‘World Vision led us to join the training on good agricultural practices, cost-cutting methods in rice farming, and group-setting process’, Boonthiya shared the background of the Promising Glutinous Paddy Fund Group, which she runs as the chairperson. There are 17 group members now. ‘After the training, World Vision gave us sticky rice seeds for cultivation. We could cut the cost of rice seeds that we were supposed to pay that year’, added Boonthiya.

The Child Sponsorship Programme and the group jointly designed the group process to ensure its sustainability. ‘After harvesting, members are obligated to contribute either some rice or cash to the fund so that the group can buy more promising rice varieties for the members to grow in the following year’, the small-figured chairperson elaborated.

With appropriate management, cost-cutting rice cultivation was possible. Because good-quality rice could be sold at a better price, the family gradually grew into self-sufficiency living.

‘I’d like to help Mom in the rice field but I’m too small. Mom told me to just give her a smile when she came back from the rice field and her exhaustion would go away’. The adorable words of ‘Som-O’, or Mintra, brought a smile along with tears of joy on the face of her mother, who then took the little girl into her arms.

‘Chanon’ in Good Health with Age-appropriate Development‘Chanon’ is eating his breakfast deliciously. This morning’s menu includes winter melon soup with a chicken drum, served with freshly cooked steamed rice in a compartment food tray. A fresh orange is added to fulfil nutrition needs. A carton of UHT milk wraps up the first meal that sets out the new day of the preschoolers in a hilltop community, supported by the Breakfast for Kids Project.

‘Teacher Aree’, the caregiver of the children at the Ban Yang Pao Childcare Centre, situated in the Omkoi Project, Chiang Mai province, shared something good that has arisen from the Breakfast for Kids Project:

‘In the past, the children came to school hungry as they didn’t have breakfast to eat at home because their parents have too many kids and aren’t able to afford to provide breakfast for everyone. They also need to rush to work in the field. But now, all of the children can have breakfast here. They are able to eat more food. Their nutritional status has improved. For instance, Chanon was underweight when he was 2 years old, the same time when he first enrolled. According to our monitoring, it is found that, right now, at 4 years of age, he has gained more weight and height, attaining age-appropriate development. I’m happy to see that the children have developed a better nutritional status, become happy and cheerful, concentrated better, and developed readiness when learning and doing activities. Our childcare centre has also been supported with instructional materials that promote child development, such as storybooks, coloured pencils, and playground equipment. The children have learned through playing and gained better development in all aspects. I’d like to thank you for the generosity you’ve extended to the children so that they are financially supported to have breakfast. Moreover, parents, caregivers, and all relevant sectors in the community have received knowledge in food preparation and become aware of the importance of early childhood nutrition promotion’, said Teacher Aree with a smile.

Jaemsai, a sponsored childSangkhla Buri Project,

Kanchanaburi Province

Cheerful Smile of ‘Jaemsai’ with Strong Life Foundation through Literacy‘I’m in grade 6th now. My current GPA is 3.79. I’ve competed in the Student Handicraft Contest under the category of Literary Criticism; I won the gold medal at the level of the educational service area 3 of Kanchanaburi province’, said Jaemsai, who was smiling cheerfully–as suggested by the meaning of her name in Thai–while sharing about her academic achievement. Although this is just a beginning, a strong foundation will definitely bring the girl to a brighter future.

To capacitate children who have outstanding academic performance and strong determination in studying and to support literacy development among the younger pupils, the Child Sponsorship Programme carried out Youth Leaders Development for Peer Tutoring Camp, which equipped children to become young leaders. There were equipped with communications basics so that they could help younger pupils gain learning development, especially in reading and writing, as illiteracy is a significant problem in the border area in Sangkhla Buri district.

‘My friends and I joined the youth leaders building activities to conduct peer tutoring; we learned about youth leadership and different ways to draw young learners’ attention when teaching them. After the camp, I helped my teacher teach the Thai language to younger kids; I taught them how to read and write and applied what I had learnt from the camp. The teacher was also there to support us. It was fun. We utilised what we had learnt to benefit other schoolmates so that they’ll have better academic performance’, Jaemsai expressed her feeling.

‘I’m glad that I’ve received support from WVFT. These activities have encouraged me to become outspoken. I’m also pleased that my friends and I can help the teacher tutor our schoolmates to improve their literacy’, Jaemsai concluded.

A Heart-fulfilling Smile of Adept Young Man ‘National Outstanding Youth Award 2018 is my highest pride. I’ll use my ability to do good things for the sake of the younger generations in the future’, Jittrakorn, or ‘Golf’, expressed the feeling from his heart about the award, which was presented by the Ministry of Education.

Because of the support of his sponsor through the Child Sponsorship Programme that extended to a little 3rd-grader, the boy from the poor family received continuous developmental opportunities. Additionally, thanks to the implementation that focused on age-appropriate child quality of life, when Golf reached teenage, he received life skills enhancement by joining a variety of youth leadership development camps. These activities have gradually transformed the shy, quiet child into a youth leader.

‘I love it when I have opportunities to do various activities that benefit the community. I have helped World Vision staff lead recreational activities during training held for the younger kids’, Golf revealed his feeling from participating in a range of activities.

Golf has recently graduated from the Army Non Commissioned Officer School and become a military officer as he wishes. ‘I am so proud of being a WVFT’s sponsored child. The WVFT staff have brought only good things to me and my family. I’ve become a more responsible, confident, and outspoken person. I’d like to thank my sponsor and WVFT’s Pak Phayun Project for giving me and my family these good opportunities,’ Golf expressed his gratitude for the opportunities that have always been blessed upon his life.
