After a wooded downhill stroll I am enticed to ancient Chaldon Church to see the Ladder of Salvation wall painting, that is 800-years-old. Alderstead Heath’s strange concrete paths remind me that armed forces’ food was stored here. Tollsworth Manor’s walls display varied building materials, but hide a three-bay hall house. Hilltop Farm and Rook farm also have centuries-old buildings. On the Downs’ crest I eat my picnic enjoying spectacular views across the Weald. It is downhill all the way into aptly named Happy Valley. I look for spring primroses, summer vetches and yellow rattle, or in autumn, you can enjoy colourful leaves and berries, before the climb back to the start. Continue down the wooded slope and emerge into Happy Valley. Continue along the top of the valley side, keeping the woodland to your right. The path will cut through a small wooded area into the next field and follow the line of the hedge on your left down the valley and up the other side. Here you will pick up the circular trail at point 4. From Farthing Downs car park, cross the road and walk across the grass, along the bottom end of the cottage gardens until you reach the woodland edge. Keeping the woodland on your left, follow the track that runs along the edge of the wood. Follow the track until you reach a major forked junction and bear left down the track on into Happy Valley. Follow the edge of the wood, keeping it to your right. The track passes through an over-grown hedge or ‘shaw’ and continues along the edge of the wood to the corner of the field. Turn right and walk up through the woodland and across two farmed fields to Chaldon Church. After a small rise you will reach the road. Turn left and walk along Ditches Lane until you reach a grassy junction with some trees on it. Take the right fork that leads to Chaldon Church. This grassy triangle, known as Chaldon Green, is the smallest registered common in England. Climb the stile opposite and set across farmland towards Furzefield Wood. Enter Alderstead Heath and you will discover a three-way junction of paths. Continue straight ahead. At the next junction, turn left along the track that leads you to the edge of the wood and Dean Lane. Avoid walking along this busy road by turning left along a track before the road, crossing over a stile and entering a farmer’s field. Walk along by the hedge (leaving Furzefield Wood behind you) until you reach a kissing gate. Cross the road and walk down the public bridleway to Tollsworth Manor Farm. Just before the farmyard gate, turn left and walk along the edge of the farmyard. Continue along the field edge, keeping the hedge to your right and then turn left onto the North Downs Way. You will pass a concrete Ordnance Survey post on your right. Continue straight on to reach Hilltop Lane. Cross Hilltop Lane and continue along the North Downs Way. After passing several houses, you will pass the Park Ham notice board on your right. Return to the North Downs Way and just after passing an entrance to Roverdene Scout Camp on your left, look for a path on your left that leads towards Rook Farm. Walk down the side of the scout camp, along the edge of Ridgebushes Wood, until you reach a five-way junction. Walk straight ahead, as if crossing the stile (the fence has long disappeared) crossing another two stiles, until you reach Rook Lane. Keeping the 17th century thatched barn and flint farmhouse of Rook Farm on your left, cross over the road (Rook Lane) and walk down Doctors Lane, which is opposite the barn. Continue along Doctors Lane, turning right into Leazes Avenue. At the next junction, take the left fork, followed by the first left. The path will then take you downhill, and on reaching the bottom, turn sharp left, along the floor of Happy Valley. If returning to The Fox pub: Walk along the valley floor and turn right after the second hedge, up the same slope you came down to join the walk in Happy Valley. Continue through the wooded area and back along the path. If returning to Farthing Downs: Walk along the valley floor for one mile. Bear left and walk up the gentle slope. At the top, turn left to Farthing Downs car park and the end of your walk.
