    Venturi Steam Trap – Functional Laboratory Study done for NICOR GAS and SOCAL GAS, Emerging Technology Programs Lead Study.

    Prepared by Gas Technology Institute (“GTI”)

    The objective of the functional testing was to:1) Validate venturi steam traps’ performance at different pressures2) Validate venturi steam traps’ performance at different condensate loads

    Results:The laboratory study captured ambient temperature and pressure, steam supply temperature and pressure, and calorimeter initial temperature, final temperature, initial weight, and final weight data. These parameters were collected for 134 test trials.

    Experimental data have demonstrated the ability of venturi orifice steam traps to discharge varying condensate loads safely across a range of steam pressures, in line with industry requirements. Even when testing outside the specified operational range of the venturi orifice traps, venturi traps were found to operate effectively, discharging condensate with measured steam loss values comparable to mechanical steam traps, within experimental error.
