Book review Smart Nursing. Nurse Retention & Patient Safety Improvement Strategies, June Fabre, 2nd ed. Springer Publishing Company (2009). ISBN: 978-08261-0465-6 The immediate rst impression of this text is one of delightful easily digestible chapters using simplistic language to illustrate key points. The simplistic style of writing and use of language makes this text appealing along with the organizational style of the books structure. Indeed the author suggests that the easy-to- understand style of the book will ensure its accessibility for which I tend to agree. The book is organized into four parts, with several chapters in each, for which two parts specically focused on the seven core values of smart nursing and their application in everyday practice. Whilst there may be numerous interpretations of what constitutes core values for nursing, the author appears to have captured succinctly within a framework, smart nursing values including: respect, simplicity, exibility, integrity, culture, commu- nication and caring. Each of these core values of smart nursing is then discussed in individual chapters. These individual chapters however are less detailed than expected, providing broad anecdotal type information, for which more comprehensive detail would have been of value. Littered throughout the chapters are practice based examples drawn from anecdotal evidence by nurse educators, administrators and nursing directors. This evidence is effectively used to illustrate how others have encountered and problem solved in their indi- vidual organizations which may benet others. Whilst this is certainly worthy by these contributors the extent and detail of the evidence may be less valuable for experienced nurse readers. Equally many of the chapters contain practical exercises for readers to undertake and test in their own practice setting. These are particularly useful for practitioners and are presented in some instances as worksheets for completion by nursing teams as a mech- anism to engage in the core values of smart nursing as referred to by the author. Similarly the text provides interesting and practical instruction for nurses to consider the nancial aspects of the nursing resource. Whilst the text is written from a US audience perspective the principles presented are applicable to an international audience. The author believes that the text will be of particular interest to not only nurses, but nurse managers, chief nurses, CEOs and those outside nursing with a vested interest in improving healthcare. Whilst the simplistic style of this text is appealing, it is this very feature that may preclude its value for veteran and senior level nurse and non nursing managers. The inherent strength of this text lies in its immersion in practice, whereby the author provides countless anecdotes from practical experiences. Whilst this is certainly worth- while and very useful for novice nurses and nurse educators, it lacks the strength and depth of evidence and contextualization for more experienced nurses and those in senior nursing and non nursing management positions. It is however quite suitable for nurses whose career trajectory is headed towards nursing management/nurse leadership as the author both encourages and provides illustrated scenarios and worksheets in which these nurses can ex their management/leadership abilities. In conclusion I feel this book which is most appealingly pre- sented, provides what I would term gold nuggetsof valuable information and practical evidence for readers immersed in prac- tice seeking to inuence positive change for which this text will entice the reader to explore additional more in-depth texts further.
