FREEFitness class for Seniors

BALANCE AGILITY

This class is specially designed for the aging body and will improve strength, balance and coordination.

Thursdays, 1:30pm – 2:30pmat the Seniors Activity Centre

On behalf of Williams Lake City Council, I am pleased to introduce the first installment of a new month-ly feature highlighting seniors in our community. Seniors are the back-bone of our community, and they play a vital role in our lives.

As elder members of society, they offer their enthusiasm, wisdom, experience, and energy to us all. We are indebted to them for what they have built and developed for those of us who follow.

The City values Williams Lake’s seniors, and in our Official Community Plan and in our opera-tions, we incorporate a focus on accessibility, housing, transporta-tion, and other issues important to seniors. Last year, the City expanded HANDYdart service, as requested

by the

Senior’s Advisory Council. Just last month, the City received

$20,000 grant from the provincial government to help the Senior’s Activity Centre upgrade its kitchen, and to provide Foodsafe and cooking classes for Williams Lake seniors.

In addition, Williams Lake will be receiving $100,000 each year for three years for the Better at Home program to help seniors remain at home in their later years.

A huge thank you to all of our seniors for all that you do to make Williams Lake such a great place to live!

Whether he’s training for the 100-mile round trip Tour de Cariboo or taking up yoga, at 79 years young Tory Kier is setting the bar high for seniors.

To keep active and fit, Kier swims once a week, goes to spin class twice a week, works out twice a week in the gym at Fit City and is hop-ing to squeeze in some more yoga classes since taking it up recently.

“Now that I’ve got the (yoga) bug, I want to explore it some more,” says Kier. “But it’s tough fitting it all in.”

And those are just the things he does besides his full-time job as an accountant at his company TJ Kier Accounting, where dur-

ing tax season he is put-ting in six days a week.

“We enjoy what we do. It’s good fun,” Kier says of the family busi-ness, where he works along side his wife of 50 years, Pat.

When asked why he continues to work into his late seventies, Kier gets a big smile on his face and explains to folks, “I have retired, work is my hobby.”

Kier’s greatest pas-sion for maintaining such a high level of fit-ness is the annual Tour de Cariboo 76-kilome-tre bike tour held every fall by Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Williams Lake.

Since its 20-year

run, Kier has rode the tour 18 times to Gavin Lake, and back to town.

“I have the 19th and 20th before I pack it in,” Kier says. “That’s my immediate goal.”

Kier only missed the bike race twice, the first one was simply because he didn't know about it and the other was because he was recover-ing from hip surgery.

“I’ve always had a bike, ever since I was a kid,” says Kier. “It keeps me in good shape and it's fun. It has to be

fun, or I don't do it.”Keeping a positive

attitude and his sup-portive family close by has clearly had an impact on Kier's life, and he offers this advice to others looking for longevity.

“If you're going to be in this world for the long haul, it has to be fun times.”

Kier encourages

also others to walk for better fitness at any age.

“You've got to do something for your health.” SMART55

B .C. businesses now have access to a comprehensive guide that provides informa-tion on how to create a business environment that is safe and com-fortable for seniors.

Creating an Age-friendly Business in B.C. is a collaborative release between the Ministry of Health and the BC Chamber of Commerce. The guide is designed to help new and prospective busi-ness owners ensure their businesses are age-friendly. It includes information on how businesses can provide an environment of safe-ty, comfort, visibility and respect for older customers. The guide also includes examples of best practices from existing businesses and an assessment tool to help business opera-

tors determine if their business is age-friendly and learn how to make improvements.

Signs of an age-friendly business include:

Wider aisles and uncluttered pathways to better accommodate walkers and wheel-chairs.

A place for custom-ers to sit while waiting, and a place to put pack-ages down.

Clear signage.Adequate and glare-

free lighting.A service desk that

is clearly visible so cus-tomers can ask for help.

Staff made aware of the needs/challenges faced by older custom-ers.

Since 2007, the Ministry of Health has supported communities across B.C. by provid-ing tools to help them

respond to an aging population. A number of B.C. communities from Alert Bay to West Vancouver have already taken action to make their communities age-friendly. Examples of age-friendly communi-ty changes include wid-ening sidewalks, install-ing benches, maximiz-ing green space, or making programs and services more accessible to the older population.

According ot the BC government...

Quick Facts:Over 650,000

British Columbians are 65 or older, and the post-war baby boom generation begins to turn 65 in 2011.

By 2031, over 1.3 million British Columbians will be over 65 - almost a quar-ter of the province's population.

B.C. has 18 BC Seniors Community Parks - located right across the province - that are designed to help older adults stay mobile, physically active, and healthy in their communities.

The easy-to-read B.C. Seniors' Guide contains information on a range of topics

including transporta-tion options, hous-ing, health services and healthy living. It is also available in Chinese, Punjabi and French translations and includes telephone numbers and website information for fre-quently used resources.

On June 29, 2011, the Province unveiled a suite of multimedia training resources that will support physi-cians and other health professionals to edu-cate seniors in ways to prevent falls and stay healthy.

On June 27, 2011, Premier Christy Clark announced $3.5 mil-lion to support an innovative project at the University of Victoria that will help seniors and people with disabilities remain as independent as pos-sible while still living at home.

Gov’t promotes age-friendly businesses

Angie Mindus photoDr. Wassenaar has been catering to the needs of his senior clients in Williams Lake for many years now, and has been recognized in recent years for his excellence in accessibility at his business Williams Lake Smiles by the local Chamber of Commerce. In 2009, Dr. Wassenaar renovated his office on Barnard Street by widening the front walkway and also creating a second access so patients in wheelchairs have another easy access to the back of the office.

BC BUSINESS NOW HAVE ACCESS TO COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO ACCOMMODATE SENIORS

Falls cause many injuries inside a home. Seniors are especially susceptible to harmful falls in the bathroom, where slippery tiles can prove too difficult for older men and women to navigate.

Installing safety fea-tures in the bathroom is

a key way to reduce the risk of accidents. When renovating bathrooms for safety, consider the following options.

* Anti-scald features: Burns can be serious business. Few people have been spared the momentary burst of hot water that occurs

in the shower or at the faucet when another household member flushes a toilet or uses a large amount of cold water elsewhere in the house. Anti-scald show-erheads and faucets pre-vent sudden bursts of hot water. Use in con-junction with turning

down the temperature of the hot water heater to eliminate burns.

* Bath bench: The elderly or those prone to lightheadedness in the shower may want to invest in a bench or seat to put into the shower. This enables sitting while washing.

* Safety bars: It can be tempting to grab onto towel racks or fau-cets to get in and out of the shower, but these items cannot provide the necessary leverage to safely move in and out of the shower or bathtub. Safety bars with a brushed surface for traction are more secure. Grab bars need to be securely attached to a wood stud in the wall and not into dry-wall or the tub enclo-sure.

* Telephone: The bathroom may seem an odd place to install a telephone, but hav-ing one nearby in the event of injury can ensure help gets to the injured party much more quickly.

Free BC Senior’s Guide now availableSeniors themselves, Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett and Ralph Sultan Minster of State for Seniors encourage seniors to utilize the free BC Seniors' Guide, which contains valuable informa-tion on services, programs and tips on healthy aging.

"The BC Seniors' Guide is a handy booklet with lots of resources to help seniors manage their health, home, money, safety and lots more," said Sultan while in Williams Lake recently.

The 10th edition of the English BC Seniors' Guide was unveiled in October and is also now available in French, Chinese and Punjabi.

The new edition of the BC Seniors' Guide contains updates to many ser-vices and programs, including a section on benefits and provides information on new seniors' resources and services. The guide also provides tips on healthy aging and encourages seniors to plan ahead for future needs. To receive a free copy, call 1 877 952-3181. The guide is also available online at: www.gov.bc.ca/seniorsguide.

Providing easy access to all the infor-mation seniors and their families need to make informed choices about care is a key commitment in the B.C. government's Seniors Action Plan. Through "Improving Care for B.C. Seniors: An Action Plan,” government is building a more accessible, transparent and accountable approach to seniors' care. The plan contains specific deliverables to help seniors and their fami-lies navigate the health system and easily access information about care options, as well as provides for the appointment of a seniors' advocate. More information on the Seniors Action Plan can be found online at: www.gov.bc.ca/seniorsactionplan

Under B.C.'s Family Agenda, govern-ment supports seniors by encouraging health, active aging so they can remain independent and enjoy active social par-ticipation. To learn more, visit: www.fami-liesfirstbc.ca

Since being appoint-ed British Columbia’s newly appointed Minister of State for Seniors, I have travelled to all corners of the province, talking with seniors, seniors organi-zations, and their fami-lies.

Everywhere, I find

active, healthy seniors. Most seniors in British Columbia – well over 90 per cent, live inde-pendently or with their families. Living at home is their most common preference.

To help seniors remain safely at home as long as possible, our

government is invest-ing in programs such as “Better at Home.” Being implemented step-by-step across British Columbia, Better at Home aims to provide a certain level of non-medical home support ser-vices for seniors, such as transportation to appointments, light housekeeping and yard maintenance. This B.C. Government pilot program is being man-aged by United Way of the Lower Mainland.

The abundance of government pro-grams can sometimes be confusing. To help seniors find their way through this thicket, the 10th edition of the BC Seniors’ Guide has recently been published – in four languages. This is a valuable refer-ence resource to help seniors access govern-ment programs and live a healthier lifestyle. It

contains information on both provincial and federal programs, with sections, for example, on the financial ben-efits available, as well as health services, hous-ing and transporta-tion. Other informa-tion such as contained in “Healthy Eating for Seniors Handbook”, the “Move for Life! physical activity DVD”

and “It’s Never too Late to Quit Smoking,” help seniors live active and healthy lives. Visit www.seniorsbc.ca for more information on these resources.

Staying active for lifeGrowing older doesn't

mean you have to lose strength or your ability to do everyday tasks. Exercise can help older adults feel better and enjoy life more, even those who think they're too old or too out of shape. Attending fitness classes may be intimidating to some mature adults, as they may be afraid that exercise will be too strenuous, or that physical activity will harm them. This is actually a major misconception; physical activ-ity is safe for people of all ages and may reduce the risks of acquiring colon cancer, coro-nary heart disease, type-two diabetes, and pain or discom-fort associated with arthritis. Recently it has been reported that exercise can even help prevent or delay Dementia.

Since many seniors already suffer from health condi-tions and general aches and pains, special fitness classes are designed specifically to accom-modate age and ailments. In order to stay fit, healthy and limber, seniors need four dif-

ferent types of exercise.• Endurance activities such

as walking, swimming, or rid-ing a bike which build "stay-ing power" and improve the health of the heart and circu-latory system

• Strengthening exercises which build muscle tissue and reduce age-related muscle loss

• Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flex-ible

• Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall

The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex offers programs for seniors that incorporate all four types of exercise.

Balance Agility is a FREE class at the Senior Activity Centre that will improve strength, balance and coor-dination for participants. Wheelchairs, canes and other aids will be incorporated into the program. This program is taught by a registered fitness instructor.

Balance Agility: Thursdays 1:30pm – 2:30pm

Gentle Fit is a class designed for seniors, begin-ners and plus size individu-als. It combines light aero-bics (endurance activities) and strength exercises as well as balance exercises to reduce the risk of falling. Each workout is completed with a relaxing cool down and stretching period.

Gentle Fit: Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30am – 10:30am Gibraltar Room, CMRC

Drop-In Aquafit: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays 12:00pm – 12:45pm

Tuesdays & Thursdays 1:00pm – 1:45pm and 8:00pm – 8:45pm.

Swimming is one of the best activities for seniors as it makes use of almost all of the major muscle groups in the body. Since water provides resistance, it develops your muscles' strength and endur-ance and at the same time, it enhances flexibility.

Seniors that are on a budget should attend the free Balance Agility class every Thursday at the Seniors Activity Centre.
