DOE DE-FOA-0000554 Objectives

Area of Interest 1: L2 Smart Grid-Capable EVSE for Residential Use

1) To develop “smart grid-capable” L2 EVSE that incorporate the following features:

• Bi-directional communications between EVSE and energy service providers• Revenue grade metering• Revenue-grade metering• Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI)/Ethernet/power line communications

(PLC)/Wi-Fi/cellular/ZigBee interface capable• Interface capable with in-home displays and home energy management systemsInterface capable with in home displays and home energy management systems• Utility communication messaging (pricing/demand response/forecasting signals, etc.) • Controls (direct load control at fixed percents of EV load reduction, remote

disconnect)

2) To demonstrate system-cost optimized design that reduces EVSE cost by a minimum of 50% compared to today’s EVSE

Program Phases and DeliverablesIn Phase 1 (Research and Development), phase objectives are:

•To establish a preliminary functional specification based on the collaborative inputs of all parties and which meets all requirements of DOE including the 50%+ costof all parties, and which meets all requirements of DOE including the 50%+ cost reduction and conformance to applicable codes and standard.•To design and construct a prototype meeting all functional requirements.•To update this design to field-ready state, culminating in a field-ready prototype. •To field-test the field-ready prototype and test all functions including smart-gridTo field test the field ready prototype, and test all functions including smart grid communication, in advance of shipping prototype units to the Department of Energy for Testing. •To ship two field-ready prototypes to the Department of Energy by the end of Phase 1 as required by the FOA1 as required by the FOA.

In Phase 2 (Testing & Certification), phase objectives are: •To support the Department of Energy with installation, test planning, data interpretation and other support as necessary throughout the test periodinterpretation, and other support as necessary throughout the test period. •To see the prototype testing successfully through the full test schedule.•To define plans for near-term certification and commercialization of the smart-charger as an available residential project.
