Here’s this week’s big idea: Following Jesus will cost you something.

Following Jesus will cost you something.Romans 5:3-5

Kids’ Club Rome: JesusOctober 27-28, 2018

Main Goal: Introduce and discuss today’s BIG IDEA: Following Jesus will cost you something.

Supplies: None

Video: Kids’ Club On Location / Week 5 (Find the video at crossroadskidsclub.net/weekend)

Time: 15 minutes

*Start large group 10 minutes into the service.

INTRO: KIDS’ CLUB ROME ● Welcome: Hi everybody, welcome to Kids’ Club! Today,

we’re talking about this BIG IDEA: Following Jesus will cost you something.

● Say: To help us really experience this, we’re going to Rome! For the last month, we’ve been watching some pretty cool videos that were actually filmed in Rome, just for you guys–and this is the last week we’ll be doing it!

● Say: Let’s check out this video and see what exactly it means to follow Jesus.

● Video: Kids’ Club Rome / Week 5 Teaching (10 minutes)

● Ask: Did anyone have a favorite part from that video? (Let a few kids respond.) What was the main idea that they talked about? (Let a few kids respond.)

● Say: There’s a lot of incredible things about following Jesus, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Jesus’ early followers were willing to give up EVERYTHING in order to follow Jesus. They wanted to tell others about who Jesus is, even if it meant being thrown in jail, getting hurt or even dying.

● Say: Today, we don’t necessarily have to worry about all the things that they worried about, but following Jesus does still us cost us something!

● Say: It’s kind of like when you’re buying something...let’s say, a new video game that just came out (let kids give you a specific example of something). That video game is going to be so amazing when you play it, but is it FREE? (Let kids respond.) Nope, it costs money! But if you really like the game, then it’s totally worth it, right?

● Say: Well it’s the same with following Jesus. It doesn’t come totally free. It costs us. We certainly don’t have to pay money of course, but it will cost us. Instead of following the world, and following what all our friends do….we follow Jesus instead. Instead of taking the easy road, and following the crowd….we follow Jesus.

Part 1 (Large Group)

Main Goal: Play a game to help kids understand today’s big idea.

Supplies: ● Roll of masking tape

(1/room)

Video: 10-minute countdown timer

Time: 10 minutes

Adaptation for smaller rooms:

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

JAIL TAG● Say: Jesus followers risked everything, even getting put in

jail. Let’s play a game where we have to work together as teams, but risk getting tagged and sent to jail too!

● Split kids into two teams. Mark a line down the middle of an open area (using masking tape).

● At the back of each team’s side of the room, designate a jail. These areas should be big enough for each team to fit in, or to touch. For example, use a few chairs to mark the jail/safe zone, or have it be a whole table.

● Each team picks one person to be the prisoner of the other team. They get sent to that team’s jail.

● Each team tries to free their prisoner by sending a team member to the jail (through the opposing team) to bring him/her back without getting captured by a member of the opposing team.

● If the person trying to rescue their own prisoner makes it to the prison through the opposing team without being caught, he/she is safe (while in the prison) and can pick their own time to run with the prisoner back to their own side of the line.

● If the team member is caught by the opposing team, they also became a prisoner needing rescue.

● Each team will be busy trying to rescue their own prisoners and protect the prisoner(s) from the opposite side from getting rescued. After 5 minutes, the team with the most prisoners wins!

● To make it harder for each team to tag people, give them parameters:

○ The leader can call out different actions so that each team can’t just run and tag people. Instead they have to do the following while trying to tag...

■ Hop on one foot■ Walk backwards■ Crawl■ Spin around■ Hop backwards

● Play multiple rounds if time allows.

Part 2 (Game Time)

Main Goal: Do an activity to help kids understand today’s big idea.

Supplies: ● Paper (3 pieces/kid)● Markers (1 set/group)● Plastic bin (1/group)

Video: 10-minute countdown timer

Time: 10 minutes

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

DEBRIEF THE GAME● What does it mean to “risk” something? What risk did you

have to take in that game?● What happened if you got tagged and you weren’t in the

safe zone?● What did the early followers give up? What cost was there

for following Jesus in ancient Rome?● What do you remember from the video? Did they talk

about anyone who followed Jesus, and had to give up something? (Paul)

● Give each kid 3 pieces of paper and markers.○ Have kids write down something on each paper that

they really love. These could be things they own, activities they love to do, favorite foods….anything!

○ Write something different on each piece of paper.○ Once kids are finished, ask: do you think following

Jesus would be worth giving these things up? Why or why not?

○ Let kids crumple up their papers and “throw them away” into the plastic bin. They may not have to actually give these things up in real life, but we should always be willing to do whatever it takes to follow Jesus!

Part 3 (Cool Down Time)

Main Goal: Give kids a chance to respond to what they’ve heard today, and worship!

Supplies:

Video: Music Video: Freedom (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrgViuuyYAQ) Music Video: Real Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLaCf4roeQQ)

Time: 15 minutes

*The 10-second countdown video is to help kids refocus and transition back into Large Group. These timers will become a permanent part of lessons, and include a funny clip at the end!

*Play the 10-second countdown video to help kids refocus as they get back into one large group.

FOLLOWING JESUS WILL COST YOU SOMETHING● Say: When you compare the Kingdom of Rome with the

Kingdom of God, there’s one big difference. The Kingdom of Rome is gone. Crumbled. People, buildings, kings, they’re all gone. The Kingdom of God is STILL growing.

● Say: Jesus’ followers willingly sacrificed (gave something up) so that the good news about Jesus could go all over the world. Paul was one of these people who shared Jesus with people, and he got in trouble for it. Paul knew what mattered, and he was willing to give his life for it.

● Say: Let’s check out this verse that Paul wrote, about WHY it’s worth it to follow Jesus, even though it costs us something (invite a kid to read it for the whole group).

● Slide: Romans 5:3-4 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

● Say: Let’s watch a music video now, and reflect for a few minutes. As you watch and listen, think about the words you’re hearing, and think about the things you might have to give up in order to follow Jesus like Paul did.

● Music Video: Freedom● Pray: (Ask God to help kids think about him and follow

him RIGHT NOW, and all the time.)● Say: Now let’s worship Jesus some more, and give him all

our attention! You can stay seated, stand, or move apart and find another spot in the room.

● Music Video: Real Love

Part 4 (Large Group)

Main Goal: Discuss today’s story and how it applies to kids’ lives through asking questions and doing a hands-on activity.

Supplies: ● Bible (1/group)● Full verse card

(1/group)● Set of scenario cards

in a ziplock (there are 8 cards per set)

Time: 10 -15 minutes (or until parents pick up)

Tip: Pray together as a group. (If a volunteer wants to pray, let them go for it! You can also ask kids for specific things that they would like prayer for.)

EXTRA TIME?● Give kids maze and

word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.

RESPOND TO THE STORY● Tell me about Paul: what do you think it was like for him

living in Rome?● Do you think Paul and other believers ever got scared?

Why was it hard to follow Jesus back then? ● How is it sometimes hard to follow Jesus today?

MAKE IT PERSONAL: WHAT’S THE RIGHT THING?● Prepare the 8 scenario cards.● Split kids into two teams, and give each one a scenario to

read through (this can also be done as one group). Give them a few minutes to brainstorm this: What’s the right thing to do, and what might it “cost” you?

● Gather everyone back together, and have each group share their scenario and how they answered it. Engage everyone in conversation around each scenario, and take ideas for anyone willing to share.

● Collect cards and return to bag for next service.

MAKE IT PERSONAL: ROMANS 5:3-4● Have a kid read the verse out loud for the group using the

verse card, or reading directly from the Bible (if reading from the Bible, help them look it up):

● Romans 5:3-4 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

● Discuss as a group what this verse means: break down each sentence, and encourage kids to wonder:

○ What does it mean to “run into problems and trials” ○ What is endurance? Strength of character? ○ What does is mean to have hope of salvation?

Romans 5:3-5 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

You are really excited about the new school year and want to get off to a great start! When the teacher asks questions, you always try your best to have a good answer, and you oftentimes raise your hand to share. You studied really hard for the first test and got a 98%! You are really excited about how this class is going until you hear the girl sitting behind you call you a teacher’s pet and a suck-up. She even said that you probably don’t have any friends because you spend all your time studying. What should you do?

You and your brother have been fighting over video games a lot lately. Neither of you wants to stop and let the other play. You’ve waited for over an hour, and your brother is still playing. When you ask him when you can play, he gets mad, throws the controller, and it breaks. Now no one can play! You are furious! What should you do?

You practiced all summer, and gave it your best shot - but still didn’t make your school’s soccer team. One of your friends has been telling everyone in your grade that you didn’t make the team because you are too slow and aren’t any good. What should you do?

After basketball practice, you invite one of your teammates to come with you to Kids Club on Sunday. He laughs at you, and says that church is dumb and a waste of time. What should you do?

There’s a new kid at school, and he has a funny haircut and wears weird clothes. Your friends enjoy making fun of him, and you’ve made some jokes about him too. What should you do next?

Come up with your own example: what’s a situation where you had to make a choice that was not easy, but it was the right thing to do. (Or, talk about a time that you did NOT make the right choice, and say what you could have done differently!)

At your house, you are responsible for a few chores every week. When your mom realizes that you haven’t done them for the past month, she is extremely mad and disappointed with you. She tells you to go to your room. You don’t think it's fair that your little brother doesn’t have any chores, and you really want to yell at your mom. What should you do?

You’re at a party, and your friends decide to watch a movie that you know your parents probably wouldn’t let you watch. Your friends really want you to watch it with them though. What should you do?
