We are called by Christ to love one another in community. The early church met in small groups and today many Christians find a small group an ideal way to learn more about God in an environ-ment less formal than Sunday worship.
Through the formation of small groups, we will seek to engage the entire All Saints’ community in Sprit-led, inten-tional faith explorations that results in transformed lives.
This Fall, we are inviting the entire parish to sign on to this small group effort. The groups will meet on a variety of days and different locations – from meeting on-campus to individual homes to other business and meeting places in the greater Los Angeles area.
We Make the Road by Walking
From critically acclaimed author Brian McLaren, this book offers everything you need to explore what a difference an honest, living, growing faith can make in our world today. It also puts tools in your hands to create a life-changing learning community in any home, restaurant, or other welcoming space. The theme set forth in this book centers on “seeking aliveness.”

We will be operating this season’s adult formation using a convener model for our Small Group gatherings.
Conveners help to set a path for the group to explore together, gather people to join them on that path, and then culti-vate the group.
There is a saying, “the wisdom is in the room.” Conveners may (or may not) be seasoned experts in specific fields of Christian tradition and practice. Nonetheless, a convener enters into the small group believing that they and the other members of the group, as baptized Christians, all bring valuable wisdom and
knowledge to the table. Conveners work to draw out and affirm the ideas and gifts brought by all of the members.
You’re invited to “seek aliveness” this fall. Join a small group. Plan to register by September 4 either online or on the patio.

In the quincentennial of Luther’s publishing of 95 Theses, giving rise to the Reformation, you might ask: What does it mean to profess ‘We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic church’? In this group we will guide and teach ourselves through the Reformation -- the history and politics, as well as the faith and practices -- that saw a single Christian church diverge and divide, giving rise to the Church of England, from which our Episcopal Church was born. Along with the McLaren book, we will be using an additional book on the Reformation.

We are preparing a table and inviting the Spirit. Join us for tea as we seek guidance and inspiration... A opportunity to manifest deeper understanding, compassion, care and healing with our selves, each other, our communities and “the other” (neighbor, stranger, the real or perceived enemy) We will address and explore the systemic and cultural boundaries that exist and the ones we erect, giving permission to allow the Spirit to work dissolving these boundaries through personal and group inquiry, liturgy, literature, prayer, contemplation and action.

Using selected chapters from Brian McLar-en’s “We Make the Road by Walking,” this group will focus on scripture, prayer, and fel-lowship. Those who have participated in Bible 101 or Bible Swim are particularly encour-aged to consider this group, but NO prior knowledge of or familiarity with scripture is expected or assumed. Weekly meetings at my home will start at 7:00 pm and conclude promptly at 9:30 pm; once we have convened we may consider organizing pot luck meals as part of our evening together.

An opportunity to try the Education for Ministry certificate program on for size. This year EfM at All Saints’ is taking a break from its regular curriculum. In the style of EfM, we will meet weekly to eat, worship, discuss and reflect on the readings, and share our stories. The readings will include parts of the McClaren book and The Dream of God: A Call to Return by Verna J. Dozier. *EfM (Edu-cation for Ministry) is community dedicated to theological education for everyone. Our day-to-day lives in the world can seem at odds with the faith we profess. Using the texts of our lives - from our relationships to the news to the traffic on the 405 - in con-versation with selected chapters from Brian McLaren’s We Make the Road by Walking, we will wrestle together with the perceived conflicts between what we say on Sunday morning and what we experience in the world. Sarah Reynolds brings a background in theology as a framework for this exploration together.

Some people like to cook but why? Is it an expression of creativity, the structure of following a recipe or a desire to extend hos-pitality to others. We will start each session with a one-pot meal provided on a rotating basis. We’ll then move to one group member who will share a personal cooking technique or recipe with the group (e.g., mom’s pie crust, grandma’s pasta sauce). We’ll discuss the intersection between food, hospitality and the Holy Sprit. We’ll also share “food memories”; those events around food, taste and smell memories that have shaped our lives. Are marriage, sex and family life religious issues? How can I believe in science and creation? Was Jesus’ resurrection real? Can only one religion be true? This small group for parents of young children (child care will be provided) will explore these and other hard questions about faith. The idea is to help parents begin to develop their own coherent theology that will provide a framework for helping nurture the faith and values of their children. Childcare provided.

Authoritative voices from the religious, po-litical, and academic communities claim that there will be no lasting peace until the Holy Land conflict between Israel and Palestine is resolved. This small group is open to adults and teenagers. We will explore this complex issue using three-time Nobel Prize nominee Archbishop Elias Chacour’s best-selling book, Blood Brothers. We will also read stories from current reporting on the ground all to better educate ourselves about the issues at play in this land we call Holy.

Our knowledge of science has freed the writers of scripture from having to account for cosmology, anthropology, etc. so we can focus on their main concern: being human and the conflict that creates with God’s invitation to the spiritual journey. We will weave together our experience, scripture, science and some mysticism to gain insight into the origins of our religion – and us. We are a band of people who love God and love this city. In fellowship, we will explore this vast place, while contemplating being a Christian today. We will meet at an easy to moderate trailhead and hike for approximate-ly 1.5-2 hours. The journeys will range from ocean-view hikes in the Palisades to trails in the valley. Following each hike, there will be an option to share a meal at a casual, moder-ately priced venue (i.e. Panera) or picnic. We will use chapters from “We Make the Road by Walking,” as a spiritual resource.
