CRYOMILLING BENEFITS 8
• Cryomilling induces high strain deformation in powdered metals, fracturing, layering and re-welding particles. This produces refined grain structures and nanoscale reinforcing phases.
•Cryogenic processing limits localized heat typically generated by high-energy ball milling, allowing ultra fine and nano scale grain reduction and in situ formations increasing strength and thermal stability.
• Cryomilling and blending allows for precision control of microstructural architecture within a bulk alloy.
• Unlike traditional alloys limited to heat treatments and chemistry modifications, Cryomilling allows the engineering of materials with physical properties designed to meet and exceed traditional characteristics.
• Cryomilling, along with spark plasma sintering (SPS) and/or hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is utilized by Cal Nano to develop nano materials and components for commercial purposes.
• Cryomilling has been studied and developed to produce nanoscale powders and consolidated products by several notable organizations including The Boeing Company/ Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne, the University of California (UC) Davis, UC Irvine, and many others.
• Cal Nano has extensively refined the process of cryomilling, having several patents pending based on increasing safety and efficiency. Mitigating the potentially pyrophoric and explosive particles typically produced when cryomilling light & reactive alloys.
COMPONENTS PRODUCED VIA CRYOMILLING @ CAL NANO
As PM processes are adaptive by nature, several process flows are considered to be at very high TRLs, making them suitable for many applications. The most common process flows are outlined by color below.
Components and materials produced by Advanced PM processes can produce properties previously thought unachievable, such as stiffness, hardness, strength, fatigue etc. This combined with the elimination of secondary processes can also be beneficial to ultimate “buy to fly” ratios cost.

SPS KEY BENEFITS 10 • SPS surpasses other technologies in its capability to rapidly consolidate engineered powder under vacuum conditions at lower temperatures than other processes, minimizing uncontrolled thermal damage and grain growth.
• Near net shape eliminates secondary processes and minimizes scrap of expensive materials
• Diffusion bonding of dissimilar materials
• Formation of Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) and components
• Rapid and repeatable sample production ensuring research and development efforts lead to commercial programs
• Unique corrosion and mechanical properties are achievable
• Low to ultra high temperature capabilities (100-2200+°C) make SPS ideal for all metallic and ceramic applications
California Nanotechnologies, Inc. is now the official exclusive North American partner of Fuji Electronic Industrial Co. (FUJI-SPS), the pioneer and global leader of SPS technology
