Amelia Pegorin

There is architecture that honours mankind puttingit at the centre of any one project.
There are buildings that transcend the temporal limitations of the old and the new, as they transmit inspiration from the past, they respect the environment and restore social purpose through the ingenuity of capable modern architects.
We have chosen two extraordinary examples of contemporary architecture which come to light near our production site, to impart the story behind the couch My Taos and our vision of sleep. The first project, “Bolle” is designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and is located in the headquarters of the Nardini distillery in Bassano del Grappa. The second project, Tadao Ando’s Fabrica in Ponzano, was commissioned by the Benetton family as a meeting place for youth from all over the world, interested in various artistic disciplines.
And lastly Antonio Marras’s work and his personal visual vocabulary, aimed at accompanying the spectator in a new artistic experience, where the confines between people, fashion and the home no longer exist. Amelia Pegorin

The architecture of “Bolle”
Within the premises of the park which houses the Bassano del Grappa Nardini distillery, Fuksas’s Bolle appear, a modern and futuristic design realised by Massimiliano e Doriana Fuksas that evokes the alchemy of the distillery and imparts a love for the surrounding landscape. The building revealed to the public in 2004, in occasion of the company’s 225 year anniversary, was launched as a research lab and space to promotegrappa’s culture. It was a gift that Giuseppe Nardini wanted to giveto the city even before giving it to his own family. Two glass “bubbles”(as Fuksas himself baptised them) are remarkably held up by fine steel legs, which seemingly float between the green of the trees and are linked through a descending ramp with a hypogeal space yet not void of rays of light. The project has a complex arrangement: two suspended volumes that contrast each other in elegance and lightness and a space underground sculpted in the land like a natural canyon that hosts a 100 seat auditorium.
The ellipsoidal bubbles that house the research centre’s laboratories, are closed off by a completely transparent membrane that allows onlookers to admire Montegrappa’s mountainous countryside. Onlookers also admire the technology and the lightness of the glass bubbles and steel materials in contrast with the texture of the reinforced concrete used for the underground auditorium. Two “worlds” and two “signs” in dissonant harmony: the first “suspended”, refined, elegant, incorporeal and the other submersed, brutal - where the reinforced concrete becomes the form’s epiphany. The mirror of water on the green plane of lawn serves as a point of conjunction between the floating world and the submerged world. Underwater skylights filter rays of sunlight during the day diffusing ethereal light in the space, whilst at night they transform into bright lights. A work that grounds functionality and suggestion, in the total respect of the surrounding countryside and becomes a significant element, not merely a frame of the structure it hosts.

Alessandra Santi

Perhaps beauty’s ultimate goal is to excite. Creating, sharing and communicating beauty is something that each and everyone of us should do with our individual voices and personal forms of expression.Maybe, on your journey when you meet Antonio Marras, even the language and design that personify you are elevated to the art world; drawing up emotions that you didn’t think you had the ability to communicate. But instead they were there all along, ready to reveal themselves from behind the closed doors of a palaceof a certain unadorned beauty that you fell in lovewith at first sight and had never forgotten. There it was waiting for you to become the frameand co-protagonist of a project where everything was seemingly created by the same hands. Wallpapers, clothes, furniture, archive objects and timeless faces…A poetic emotion, created by multiples hands, nurtured by a common passion; the search of a beauty that is never an end in itself, but rather capable of leavinga mark on the hearts of the beholder. Saba, attraverso un lavoro minuzioso di riadattamento delle stampe su supporti per arredi, ripropone maxi fiori, pied-de-poule, tartan e scene di caccia su tessuti di velluto, lino e panni di lana.— Lightness of gesture and the poetic sensibility of Saba's colour palette find numerous points of intersection with Antonio Marras's art, who for the occasion of the Salone del Mobile 2018, re-interprets the iconic collection of New York couches and lounge chairs, drawing from the charming textile combinations from his pre- collection for autumn-winter 2018/19. Saba through its slight re-adaption of Marras's prints for furnishings, re- proposes maxi flowers, pied-de-poule, tartan and hunting scenes printed on velvet fabrics, linen and woollen cloth.

Fabrica

Founded in 1994 with Luciano Benetton’s e Oliviero Toscani’s vision, Fabrica is located in Treviso and is a place of magical architecture restored and significantly augmented by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, starting from the ancient Palladian villa, the fulcrum of the Renaissance-inspired research center. An area of 51,000 square meters includes spaces designed for laboratories, classrooms, offices, a cinema, a library and last but not least, meeting places. The gallery, the colonnade, a large underground square and several stairways interweave a dialogue between the seventeenth-century villa and the contemporary buildings, integrating into the countryside.
The famous Japanese architect has created a place where futuristic solutions blend harmoniously with the original buildings, architecture designed with the intention of giving importance to meeting and connection points and placing the opportunity of human interaction at the center of the project.
"The connecting spaces, which are usually assigned a role of secondary nature, have been carefully considered in this project. They serve as places of communication and meeting between people; people and history or nature. These places favour a dialogue between people with different backgrounds. They are places designed as squares, atriums and galleries, and distributed throughout the entire project." To allow the scenery and the memories of the place and existing structure to live on the architect designed most of the new construction underground, so as to not detract from the beauty of the countryside.
The new architectural structure aims to highlight the charm and strength of the ancient villa and establish, in an atmosphere of total harmony, a reciprocal and cathartic relationship between old and new, transcending temporal dimensions. Natural elements, like light and wind, are welcomed within the design thus becoming intermediary elements of the differences.
Fabrica is also the intersection between two cultures that have been able to bridge not only geographical distances starting from the search for common values, such as respect for the environment but also the excellence of the harmonious execution itself and participation in the project, making every protagonist a representative of a bigger design.
"I have always believed that architecture, by its very nature, has an important social concern and is the fruit of everyone's cooperation and commitment. Apart from a few rare cases, architecture can not be achieved without genuine collaboration. The architect inserts himself with his work in the historical and social context that surrounds him and brings this awareness into his works. "
Tadao Ando likens Fabrica with Japanese “Yutori”, a concept that expresses the freedom inherent in the process of creation; a concept that, seemingly lost from contemporary society endeavours towards economic and productive growth. At Fabrica it seems to still exist and be greatly appreciated.
