EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

I was placed for CSR project in SLUM REHABLITATION SOCIETY (SRS) an

NGO which is located at BANDRA (W).

It’s an NGO which is strictly non-profit organization, deeply committed to Creating environmentally compatible housing for people living in the slums

My learning experiences with SLUM REHABLITATION SOCIETY were very

helpful &knowledgeable experience in terms of being more a responsible student.

As a CSR, I took survey of more than 94 Houses residing in the Muragan Chawl. I

came to understand their behavior and whether they have basic necessities. Learnt

to deal with different situations and had good time in learning and performing as

one of the best CSR in campaign. Also understood that practically it is very

difficult to stay in slum area and maintaining cleanliness is really challenge in slum

area. So I along with my team mate NILESH AND AMIT spread awareness

among all people residing in slums

Hard work, Confidence, consistency, teamwork, creativity, innovation, is the key

learning’s out of my project.

My experience with SLUM REHABLITATION SOCIETY was very memorable

and full of learning’s, where I found a lot of positive changes in my attitude,

learning and behavior.

I would like to say that it will be one my best skills that would remain with me and

help me in the coming life which offer many challenges.

INTRODUCTION TO CSR

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:-

The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility was first mentioned 1953 in the

publication ‘Social Responsibilities of the Businessman’ by William J. Bowen.

However, the term CSR became only popular in the 1990s, when the German

Betapharm, a generic pharmaceutical company decided to implement CSR. The

generic market is characterized by an interchangeability of products. In 1997 a halt

in sales growth led the company to the realization that in the generic drugs market

companies could not differentiate on price or quality. This was the prelude for the

company to adopt CSR as an expression of the company’s values and as a part of

its corporate strategies. By using strategic and social commitment for families with

chronically ill children children, Betapharm took a strategic advantage.

In July 2001, the European Commission decided to launch a consultative paper on

Corporate Social Responsibility with the title „Promoting a European Framework

for Corporate Social Responsibility“. This paper aimed to launch a debate on how

the European Union could promote Corporate Social Responsibility at both the

European and international level. The paper further aimed to promote CSR

practices, to ensure the credibility of CSR claims as well as to provide coherence in

public policy on CSR.

CORPORATE SOCIALRESPONSIBILITY:-

DEFINITION:

Corporate social responsibility is basically a concept whereby companies decide

voluntarily to contribute to a better society and a cleaner environment.

It is represented by the contributions by companies to society through its business

activities and its social investment.

Companies worldwide started promoting their Corporate Social Responsibility

strategies because the customers, the public and the investors expect them to act

sustainable as well as responsible.

CSR can not only refer to the compliance of human right standards, labor and

social security arrangements, but also to the fight against climate change,

sustainable management of natural resources and consumer protection.

There is a growing need for nonprofit and non-governmental organizations

(NGOs) throughout the world to be more effective and productive. One the many

way they are achieving this is by broadening and strengthening the constitution of

their boards. An increase in the effectiveness of NGO board itself has been

achieved by bringing together organizations leaders with a shared interest in the

work of boards, building capacity by training, and development tools. Having a

good and effective NGO board provides a basis for successful management of its

organization, familiarizes its target constituents with the activities of the NGO,

help in distributing responsibilities among the term members within the NGO

organization.

An NGO Board may be called by different names- Board of Directors, steering

committee, ‘Advisory Group’ etc. The term ‘Board’ is used collectively and

interchangeably to all these names.

Introduction on Slums

Slums have constituted an integral part of Mumbai's cityscape for several decades

Many of them stay in slum colonies for the lack of a better alternative. Slum-dwellers stay in shanty structures in unhygienic environment, not by

choice but by compelling circumstances as they were thrown out of the Formal housing sector, the latter being unaffordable and much beyond their

income levels. It is imperative to enhance their standard of living and for which an

authorized dwelling unit is a first step in the right direction. This, in turn, will bring about a marked improvement in their hygiene and

health

STUDY DETAILS ABOUT SLUM REHABLITATION SCHEME

By amendment to the Maharashtra Regional & Town Planning (MR & TP) Act 56, Slum Rehabilitation Authority has been declared as a planning authority, to function as a local authority for the area under its jurisdiction. SRA has been empowered to prepare and submit proposals for modification to the Development Plan of Greater Mumbai.

Brief on Slum Rehabilitation Scheme

Every slum structure existing prior as on 1/1/1995or prior thereto is eligible for rehabilitation.

Slum Dwellers get a self-contained 225sq.ft.carpet area tenement free of cost.

Cost of construction of the rehabilitation tenements is cross subsidized from the sale of free sale tenements in the open market

No financial involvement of the government

FSI generated from Rehab to sale ratio is 1:0:75 for city, 1:1 for suburbs,1:1:33 for Dharavi

The sum of Rs 20,000/- per tenement is recovered from the developer for subsidizing the monthly maintenance of the building.

FSI is generated on the basis of no of rehab units on the plot and not as per size of the plot.

About Slum Rehabilitation Society

Slum Rehabilitation Society is a scheme by an NGO CHIEF SIR .ADOLF TRAGLER. Presently they are working with 22 Cooperative Housing Societies of slum dwellers, motivating and moving them towards rehabilitation.Under Rajeev AwasYojana.Some of them are: Ganesh Nagar (Mahalaxmi), Bamanwadi (Goregaon), Jawale Compound (Andheri East), D MelloWadi Bandra (West). There are around 45-50 employees in Tragler Sir’s NGO. The staff includes office staff, field staff, doctors, teachers, librarian, and health workers. Also there are two advocate, two architects, one builder, one legal consultant who are part of this NGO in terms of their specialization in their work. I along with my colleague was assigned to cover as many slum people survey by visiting their home. Mr Adolf Tragler is the co-founder of Triangular (NGO).Triangular celebrates World Habitat Day every year and this year too it will celebrate in December 2012.Flexis Thomas is an administrator and HR specialist in Slum Rehabilitation Society. He leads, guides and motivates the administrative staff and deals with architect, builders and takes decision of work and progress report from his administrative staff towards the goal of building slum free Mumbai.

ACHIVEVMENTS

Survey of 94 houses residing in slum .

Visit to malaria department at bandra municipality to pump the machine which leaves dhua in the air for removing mosquitoes and after 3 days the municipality spread that dhua which released from the pump.

Medical assistance provides to financially challenge.

Cleanliness and hygiene awareness drives at the slums.

METHODOLOGY

We are three members in a team, we had done survey in Muragan chawl and Mount Mary on socio-economic status of Slum Dwellers.

Field Co-coordinator, Sunita mam took me and my colleague Rahul and Amit to a slum area at Muragan Chawl where we carried our survey by visiting 94 houses of slum and took their survey.

LIMITATIONS

Morning hours was an busy hour of survey where most of the men residing at slum area used to not meet us as they went for work and mostly women did not allow us for survey .

FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS

This program helps us to realize that people residing in slum also wish to have a proper constructed home ad this wish is fulfilled by our NGOs Create environmentally compatible housing for people living in the slums

It helps people dwelling in slums to lead a better life.

It helps under privileged children to opt for primary and secondary education.
