Education in the Slovak RepublicA Brief Global Overview

The primary education

(according to International Standard Classification of Education – ISCED 1) is provided by the first stage of primary school (Grades 1-4) the beginning of systematic education

Lower secondary education (ISCED 2) is provided by the second stage of primary school (Grades 5-9). The acquisition of the lower secondary education enables the pupils to continue in education that provides for secondary education (ISCED 3)

Secondary general and vocational/technical education (ISCED 4, ISCED – 5) are carried out in secondary schools represented by:

• Gymnasia• Secondary vocational schools (JSS Private

School)• Secondary technical schools

Other important aspects of primary and secondary educationSecondary vocational schools prepare the students for execution of worker´s trades and vocational activities corresponding to the appropriate trades. The study is completed by a final examination.In secondary vocational school the students may be also provided training for execution of some demanding worker´s trades and some technical-economic activities of operational nature. This study is completed by the secondary school-leaving examination. An inseparable part of education in secondary schools is practical teaching. It provides for combination of education and training with practice, consistent adoption of the appropriate knowledge, skills, and acquisition of the skills use the knowledge in practice. Practical classes are carried out in several types of establishments.

SENIOR CARE (AGED CARE) – BASIC INFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS

Field of study: 7667600 Senior Care

Form and type of study: daily higher learning qualification studies

Length of education and training: 3 years

This field is intended for: girls and boys

Overall characteristic of the graduate

The graduate of the field of study Senior Care (7667600) is prepared for work with people in a post-productive age in both state and non-state social services facilities as well as for individual care for the client at home.

The training is founded on the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills in the field of social care, healthcare attendance and caregiving for the sick and healthy individual. It is also focused on becoming acquainted with the possibilities and procedures for planning, organizing, managing and guiding the activities of the client which support the client’s interests as well as his psychological and physical activity.

CHARACTERISTIC OF THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING

The senior care field of study (7667600) prepares the graduate for qualified and independent care and attendance of seniors in state and non-state facilities offering social services with a focus on this age category.

The education is based on prior training in secondary school and takes advantage of the knowledge and capabilities acquired in general education. This is the starting point for the technical and practical training of pupils. The general component focuses on development of communication skills and mastering the basic terminology in the field in the selected foreign language, the fundamentals of religion and the development of movement skills and physical condition.

The technical component of the education allows students to acquire knowledge of

the substance, concept and techniques of healthcare attendance and caregiving, geriatrics and gerontopsychiatry, types of illnesses and the prevention thereof, good nutrition and pharmacology – all focused on seniors. It also provides information on the possibilities of organization and content of seniors’ free time, social security and social legislation.

The practical component of the training ensures the ability of the graduate to provide first aid, work with professionals (physicians, psychologists, gerontologists, psychiatrists, social workers, …), keep documentation on changes in the client’s health, have command of the procedures and techniques of healthcare attendance and caregiving, communicate with the client and assist the client with creating social contacts. The graduate acquires the skills for creating and realizing conditions for the physical activity of seniors. He/she will have command of the procedures for attending to the seriously ill and the dying and will acquire skills for working with occupational tools and instruments.
