The beginning of the semester is always so exciting—students are energized and anxious to meet us, and we are ready to meet them, provide a great service, and teach at a high level. This semester we aim to achieve 100% course assessment completions and increase student success. Completing your course assessment is the first vital step to implement any change that will affect students. If you are passionate about student needs, sharing a best practice that has made a difference, or simply bringing to light what works and what doesn’t, please use the assessment tool as a means to share this invaluable information. The assessment process is the chance to document the strengths and weaknesses of our classroom needs and make a difference. We’ve done a lot of planning, had fruitful discussions, and implemented curricular changes that will improve teaching and learning throughout the campus. Let’s continue. Assessment Progress Assessments from the 2012-2013 Cycle: We have a hard- worked 90% completion rate. The assessment list is getting smaller as we are making great progress. 54 courses need to be submitted. Assessments from the 2013-2017 Cycle: 143 courses were scheduled to begin assessment in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014. 100 courses have begun the assessment process. 47% of those scheduled to assess based on the calendars were submitted. Assessment Calendars: Almost all SLO calendars are completed. This means that most of our courses have been scheduled to assess, begin dialog, create an action plan, or implement a change. SLO Professional Development Week workshop: The workshop on Tuesday, August 26th was an awesome success, which included 25 faculty members. The SLO team thanks the workshop presenters genuinely for being at the forefront of improving teaching and learning through our assessment process. The speakers showcased effective strategies that have worked for them, including curricular changes that stemmed from assessment. The dialog was rich. (See photos above). Jack Moy discussed West’s Aviation assessment process and shared how to implement changes with the “ABLE” continual improvement process that ensures student success: • Assess – looking for opportunities to improve student success. • Build – try to understand the failure & build a solution for the root cause of the failure. • Launch – an acceptable solution with the buy-in from the faculty. • Evaluate – reviewing the Public Norms Online Reports to confirm success. The Aviation Program is also integrating Reading Apprenticeship into its curriculum. Katherine Boutry talked about Eng 206: Making the Humanities Quantifiable. She demonstrated how to teach backwards among many other things. She stated something key about this: “Knowing what you will be expecting from students allows you to deliver the message clearly, helping students grasp the knowledge both in visual and tangible ways they can remember.” Nancy Sander modeled her ESL 8 assessment tool and showed us how to integrate Reading Apprenticeship, simplify instruction, and keep in mind language acquisition nuances.

SLO & Easy: SLO Tips

SLOly but Surely Assessment Database

After careful review of seven SLO databases (SPOL, TK20,WEAVE, etc), several demos, and heavy deliberation, we have narrowed our choices to TracDat and eLumen as final options.  Among other things, our criteria included the following: user-friendly,simple and straight-forward design,

capability to produce reports and summaries, roll-up capability to PSLOs and ISLOs.  We will have a faculty demo for both of these systems on September 30 and hope you can join us to provide feedback about the systems.  Currently, unlike many of our sister colleges, we do not have

an SLO data system that houses our SLO work.  The selected SLO database will create uniformity and a central area for all SLO matters at West.  It will also be helpful for faculty in streamlining and centralizing the process by housing and completing everything on one secure website.

SLO Division Workshops Last semester, we had hands-on workshops with the Business Division and Behavioral

and Social Sciences Division. We are moving forward and scheduling hands-on workshops with all divisions. The entire SLO team will be present to assist you with wrapping up pending assessments and answering questions. The following divisions meetings are scheduled.
