The very positive public response to the 2012 ‘Sligo Live’ has given theorganisers the impetus and inspiration to maintain this excellentstandard for this year’s event, and visitors can be assured of anenjoyable an exhilarating time in Sligo’s friendly and hospitablesurroundings.

Sligo’s reputation as a vibrant cultural and tourism destination is greatly enhanced byhosting major flagship events such as ‘Sligo Live’, and Sligo Borough Council is committedto working with our local communities and key local agencies to promote and showcaseSligo at every opportunity. The year of the ‘Gathering’ provides another exciting context tothe event, as we welcome home friends and family to celebrate this showcase musical eventwith us.

Hosting events of this scale requires an enormous commitment by many dedicated people,and I would like to pay tribute to the volunteers, sponsors, organisers and other unsungheroes who contribute so much, without expectation of acknowledgement or reward. Oneambition which inspired the founding of ‘Sligo Live’ was to explore the depth and quality ofSligo’s musical tradition and heritage, and this will once again be a feature this year.

Fiach is currentlyrecording his second record, provisionally titled 'TheRevolution', due for release in early 2014.

Midlake stays ahead of its own time by making music that transcends it. TheDenton, Texas band's 2006 release The Trails of Van Occupanther got fans andbloggers re-evaluating dormant ancestors like Fleetwood Mac, America,Crosby Stills Nash and Young and Bread - music that has been embedded inthe indie worlds unconscious (Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear) ever since.On their 2010 release The Courage of Others, Midlake reinvented themselveswith influences from British folk to Russian Cinema - and received rave reviewsculminating in the band being named Best Live Act by Mojo Magazine.

The band had shown their sublime instrumental mettle by backing John Granton his award-winning 2010 solo debut Queen Of Denmark. This one-offconcert celebrates the release of Midlake's fourth LP Antiphon on Bella Union.

Their trademark sound - theinterplay between guitars, bass and mandolin, piano and percussion, setneatly on a bedrock of native and American influences, is a persuasivepatina, one which has seen them compared to the likes of Mumford andSons, Noah and The Whale, and The Low Anthem.

The emigrant fiddlers of Sligo - Michael Coleman, James Morrison, andPaddy Killoran made the first popular recordings of Irish Traditional music inNew York during the early twentieth century. These recordings broughtSligo’s vibrant traditional music style to millions, and when imported backto Ireland reinvigorated traditional music.

Bruce Springsteen, when asked what he was listening to these days,said: "Pete Molinari - and if you don't know anything about him, he's great". Fiddle competition for under 16sSligo Live is again joining with CCÉ Sligo Town Branch to host the 'Fiddler of Dooney'. Thefirst of two days of intense competition will see the under 16 fiddlers compete for the JuniorFiddler of Dooney title. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldestand most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition.

For more than a century there have been strong links between traditional music in Sligo andthe U.S.A. To recognise and strengthen this bond, The Fiddler of Dooney brings anadjudicator over from America each year. Brian Conway, Winifred Horan, Tony De MarcoKevin Burke and Maurice Lennon have all filled the role and this year we are privileged tohave Grammy nominated Chicago’s Liz Carroll, and former winner, Manus McGuire, judgethe competition.

Seamie learned from his parents, Joe and Sheila, fiddlers both from the heartlandof South Sligo. Over the years they have participated in many sessions and stagesand Seamie has guested on Tony’s album, 'The Sligo Indian'. Sligo Live and CCÉ Sligo Town Branch host the 'Fiddler of Dooney', inspired by the W BYeats poem of the same name. Today’s competition is the turn of the Senior (over 16s)players. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and mostprestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. The roll of previous winners reads likea who’s who of traditional fiddling and includes Matt Cranitch, Cathal Hayden, Liz Kane,Paddy Glackin and Manus McGuire.

This year, for the first time The Fiddler of Dooney competition is reaching outside Irelandwith heats in Boston and New York, as part of The Gathering, the Fáilte Ireland initiative towelcome people home. The winners of these heats will join fiddlers from all over Ireland incompeting for this magnificent award.

The standard of’ playing is a joy to behold. Competitors need not be tied to any rigidformula or to play in a Sligo style, although Sligo Live celebrates the Sligo style with itsinfectious lift.This year’s adjudicators are former winners, Seamus McGuire and Tony DeMarco from New York. Leonard Barry from Co. Kerry has been playing the uilleann pipes since the age offifteen and is one of the leading Pipers today. ‘New Road’ is Leonard’s secondrelease.
