In all facets of our lives the knowledge and skills we need in order to beactive and contributing members of our society is changing. Whether it isin the way we manage our health or our financial affairs, our social or ourworking lives, we must constantly develop new skills and gain newknowledge and insights into the way the world is changing. If we do notupdate our knowledge, skills and competencies we will find ourselvesisolated and excluded.
In the past the phrase 'haves and have nots' was used to make thedistinction between those who had wealth and those who didn't.Increasingly the distinction is also being made on the basis of whether ornot individuals or groups have the tools and skills to access informationand to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world.
Here at the Institute we have undertaken significant developments inlifelong learning in the past few years including the appointment of aHead of Lifelong Learning, the establishment of the Centre for Researchand Advanced Education, developing a wide range of new programmesin different formats; part time, distance learning and block release. We areconstantly looking for ideas to improve the services we provide to peoplein the communities we serve and welcome any suggestions in that regard.
We believe that in this handbook you will find evidence of ourcommitment to life long learning as presented in our Strategic Plan andthat you will find a range of courses that will enable you to enrich yourlives, develop new skills and acquire new knowledge.

This one day intensive course is intended foranyone who:• Uses instruments to measure quality characteristics.• Calibrates instruments.• Audits calibration systems.• Manages an organisation’s measurement
management system. It is relevant to all sectors of the economy. Every daydecisions are made based on data captured bymeasurement processes. Very often little attention ispaid to the quality of this data. How can we beconfident that the quality of the data captured isadequate? How can we reduce the risk of makingbad decisions based on bad data?
The science of measurement is referred to as metrologyand is an integral part of any quality managementsystem. Various standards have been developed to helppeople engaged in measurement. These include:ISO9001, ISO10012 as well as ISO17025. Unfortunately, these provide more information on frameworks thanspecifics for the day-to-day practitioner. This courseexplains the world of industrial metrology in easy tounderstand terms. It links the product or processcharacteristics to the metrological requirements of themeasurement process.
Participants will have a clear understanding of wheremeasurement fits into the overall quality system andwill feel comfortable with tasks such as:1. Instrument selection.2. Interpretation of calibration certificates.3. Instrument calibration and4. Calibration system management.
The course also introduces the concept ofmeasurement uncertainty and deals with it in a non-statistical manner, which is adequate for mostindustrial applications.
Presenter: Bob Kennedy PhD.Bob is a lecturer in the School of Engineering and lectures onits mechanical and quality management programmes. Heholds a primary degree in manufacturing engineering aMasters on quality management systems and a PhD incommunity excellence.
