What does Trócaire do?• Securing Livelihoods; by providing seeds,

tools, animals and training to assist families and communities to secure enough food and the ability to generate an income

• Fighting for Human Rights; by helping people to understand their entitlements and mobilise into community groups to access their right with legal support where needed

In 2004 Willbeto was forced to leave his home following violent conflict. He moved with his wife Margaret to a camp nearby for safety. In 2005 Willbeto returned to find his land taken by a wealthy landowner.

Tigist received treatment for HIV from the Trócaire funded clinic run by the Daughters of Charity in Addis Ababa (capital city of Ethiopia) which resulted in Tariku being born HIV free in 2008. Tigist has received support to start her own small business selling Injera ( a local food) and she says “My business is doing well and helps me pay the rent and feed my children. Ambika Paraja (9 years old)Ambika and her family live in the rural tribal village of Jhilligoan made up of 50 families totalling 227 peopleParaja is a tribal clan name Tribal people’s economy, culture and spiritual beliefs revolve around forests, hills, mountains, rivers and lands. A respect for the land and nature is part of day to day living.

• On average families in the village of Jhilligoan live in extreme poverty, surviving on the equivalent of €1.50 a day (this is the value of the daily crops they eat and any extra income).

• “We are in a difficult situation. We have to work hard to make a living but we both go to work outside the community to earn extra money and because we do this we are able to live happily.” Hari Paraja (38)

Since 2006 Trócaire has supported this community. Before this support the main challenges were:Food Security and infrastructure; Low levels of land ownership, Lack of crop production and therefore food, due to poor land and farming techniques, People living below the poverty line, Difficulty earning an income, Land damage due to flash floods and no road into the village

Education; Lack of education for children as no nearby school, Low adult literacy rates

Rights; No knowledge of available government supports for poor people, Lack of healthcare support and knowledge
