Slide One – Enrichment & Student Experience

Welcome to this introduction of our enrichment programme here

at Joseph Chamberlain College. My name is Jessica and I am part

of the Marketing & Events Team.

The college provides an outstanding learning experience and I’m

sure you’ve heard about our outstanding Ofsted and the fantastic

results our students achieve in their subjects.

Outside of lessons we also provide many opportunities for students

to develop their subject specialist knowledge and soft skills

through our wider learning opportunities. We call this enrichment

programme JCC Extra.

Our students get involved in JCC Extra for many reasons, from

making their CV and applications stand out to making new

friends. From benefitting wellbeing to learning a new skill. We work

with students to provide opportunities that reflect their skills and

interests. Later on in this video you will find my email address so

please feel free to give feedback on what activities you would like

to see at the college from September 2020.

Slide Two – Extra Curricular Activities

Here we have last year’s JCC Extra offer that we announced at

our annual enrichment fair. There are opportunities to develop

your wider understanding of a subject, for example our Science

department run the popular Access to Careers in Health and the

Business team run the International Relations Society.

At Joseph Chamberlain College our facilities boast a fantastic

Sports Centre including a gym and weights room. These are

available to students for when they are not in lesson or

independent study.

Some clubs sit outside of our core subjects such as Dungeons and

Dragons Club and Duke of Edinburgh.

Slide Three – High Achievers’ Programme

Rosie is our Head of Extended Curriculum and oversees the wider

opportunities we are exploring in this video. Part of Rosie’s role is

the High Achievers’ Programme which supports students to set

their sights high in terms of what they want to do after leaving

college.

Slide Four – High Achievers’ Programme

Elements of the programme include support to ensure students

are stretched and challenged to achieve the best grades and

progress onto excellent pathways. This also involves links with top

universities and employers. We also offer the Extended Project

Qualification. The EPQ is well recognised as a course and allows to

students to complete a project, of their choosing, that

demonstrates strong independent working skills and high level

academic thinking.

Slide Five – High Achievers’ Programme

This year the High Achievers’ Programme supported seven

students through Oxford and Cambridge applications, with two

students offered places to study.

We interviewed these students about their experience of the

process and all shared how positive and rewarding they had

found it.

Slide Six – Student Led Clubs and Societies

We also encourage students to start up and lead their own

societies as part of JCC Extra.

Two of notable mention are our 2020 Environmental Society &

KPOP Society. In both groups we have seen students who didn’t

know each other come together and create new relationships

based on a shared interest.

From student feedback we are so pleased to hear words such as

“rewarding”, “fun”, “laughing” and “stimulating”! If you are

interested in sharing your interests or have always wanted to try

something new, do let us know and we can work with you make

these opportunities happen.

Slide Seven – Student Council

The Student Council is a wider opportunity that promotes

leadership and communication skills. The council share student

feedback with staff, like the Principal, and initiate different

projects. Previous years have seen new water fountains, bike

shelters and removing single use plastic cutlery from the canteen.

Each year the student body elects a new Student Council for the

year.

From September look out for opportunities on how to get involved

in the Student Council and how you can get in touch with them to

share your views.

Slide Eight – Student Council

And this is me. For those students who do start up their own

societies and for those who join the Student Council, we will be

working together to make them a success.

Slide Nine – Rewards and Recognition

What is great about being part of the JCC community is

recognition and celebrating our students’ successes. We are

based on one campus and get to know our students and their

families well.

Part of our rewards programme is we host an annual ceremony

where we are joined by students and their families for an evening

of awards, food and entertainment. Throughout the year students

can also expect recognition through departments in the form of

messages and certificates from staff.

Slide Ten – The JCC Calendar

Our final aspect to talk about is the JCC Calendar. Events are

spread out over the year with students and staff involved in all.

The Student Council are responsible for Student Parliament (a big

student meeting any student can attend), student parties and a

charity fundraiser.

Our Sports Centre run a number of events with ‘Inflatable Fun’

being a popular event of previous years.

Birmingham Theatre School are a franchise of Joseph

Chamberlain College and we are treated each year to a number

of performances.

Outside of these centrally calendared events there will be many

additional opportunities offered through your subject areas from

visiting guest speakers to trips. All students are given a college

email account to stay up to date with these opportunities.
