Swim team news Rebecca Harrigal with incredible coaching experience, including experi-ence as a Division 1 head coach. I’ve already ordered team supplies, including new stop watches, pool buoys, kickboards, and a very cool storage system for our supplies. In January, Gail Solomon, Helen Power, Brenda Poole, Vicky Car-mody and I will begin our planning for the season, and in February we’ll learn our division for next summer and what teams SHBR will be swimming against and when.

I trust our swim families are thinking about the best six weeks of the year, and hopefully our swimmers are prepping with winter sport activities (swimming would be nice). And dear parents, hopefully you’re thinking about how you can help the team next summer. This will be the third year for Gail and me as swim team reps, and we’ll be looking for replace-ments. Have a great winter and we’ll see you in May.

We here at The Frozen Dairy Bar and Boardwalk Pizza would like to wish each and every one of you a safe and happy Holiday season. We would like to take this op-portunity to thank you for your continued patronage.

Our relationship with the club has been beneficial to our operation and we hope that you feel equally satis-fied with the food service that we have provided over the past three years.

We are proud to be rolling

out a new catering company with an exciting new menu for 2011. You can find the new “Natoli’s Catering” menu at fdbpizza.com by clicking the link for catering or by going directly to chef-natoli.com. We also have a new Boardwalk Pizza menu that has many new items for your family to try. We look forward to servicing the SHBR snack bar next year and as always are open to suggestions and comments. Thank you for your contin-ued support.

worn-out areas of the club. A top priority this winter is upgrading the pump house for the upper pool, which is already in the early phase. Although not visible from the outside, we are having some problems with water seeping into the concrete roof, causing scaling and rusting of the structure. A

new roof will be installed, hopefully fixing this prob-lem and ensuring the build-ing stands for many more years. Depending on how the rest of the club survives the winter, this will not be the only off-season project, but it was the most urgent. If you would like to share any feedback or offer sug-gestions, please email me

at [email protected].

Just because the pool is covered and frost is on the ground doesn’t mean your swim elves are taking the winter off.

Swim plans for next year are moving along. Our coaching staff has already been se-lected. Doug Burns will re-turn next summer as Head Coach, with Jamie Bugel and Callie Hyder as Assistant Coaches. Our new Assistant Head Coach will be Breanne Rodino, who comes to us

The last two winters have been full of projects to reno-vate our lovely club. While you can't see it from Sleepy Hollow Road, this winter will be no different. Thanks to the full member-ship, and long lines of inter-ested potential members, we can afford to keep up the fast pace of repairing and replacing the old and

I encourage you to vote in the upcoming election and attend the January open membership meeting if you’d like to see more of how the board works together. In January and February, we will begin planning for the 2011 SHBR tennis and pool season. We value your ideas and input; you are always welcome to send your thoughts to [email protected]. I wish all of you a very safe and happy holiday season. Thanks for your support.

The SHBR Diving Seals con-cluded their NVSL Division I debut season with a 3-2 record, earning a return spot to the same division for 2011. The depth and ex-perience of the team carried us through several tough meets. We also welcomed many new younger divers to the team. In an effort to improve the quality of prac-tice time for such a large team, the coaches adopted new training techniques that incorporate land exercises, an approach we plan to ex-pand on next season. Five members of the Diving Seals participated in All Stars: Claire Cullather (Freshman Girls), Chloe Grishaw (Senior Girls), Mariana Hershner (Junior Girls), Garrett Ross (Freshman Boys), and Sean Paulson (Intermediate Boys). Every summer, the NVSL hosts the Cracker Jack Invi-tational. The League boasts that this is the largest one-day meet in the world and

this year attracted more than 350 divers. In 2010, SHBR had 14 divers compete in this meet and four others who were registered but were rained out.

Another specialty dive meet hosted by NVSL is the Wally Martin 3-meter Meet. This year the Seals were repre-sented by Alex Brady, Claire Cullather, Mariana Hershner, and Aidan Jones. Mariana took the Championship for the Junior Girls event. Other divers tested the 3-meter board at the league-sponsored indoor practices at Oak Marr Rec Center, and we are looking forward to additional participants next year!

At the awards ceremony, Coaches Anita O’Quinn, Chloe Grishaw, and Ryan Herron recognized two di-vers for their hard work and contributions to the team. Maria Torregrossa was pre-sented with the Jakabcin Sportsmanship award. This award is given to the diver who is nominated the mem-bers of the team for demon-strating good sportsmanship with his or her teammates, competitors and coaches. Garrett Ross was presented with the Coaches’ Award for work effort and dedication to the sport.

Every year we need parent volunteers to run our dive meets successfully. The toughest category to fill is Referee/Judging officials. We still need to develop our skills in these areas for the upcoming season. If you would like information on off-season or early sum-mer programs to develop these skills, please call me at 703/560-0329 or e-mail me at [email protected]. As we head into the coldest part of the year, think sum-mer and SHBR!

The membership line is quiet at this time of year, but that changes after Janu-ary 1, when we begin to take new names for summer leases. Our waiting list for our equity memberships continues to grow longer each year. As always, if you have friends who are interested in joining SHBR next summer, please have them contact us as soon as possible. We continue to turn families away each year and we fill up earlier and earlier. As a reminder, we require a $125 nonrefundable deposit to place your name on the list. This deposit is then de-ducted from the first year membership costs. If we have the deposit by March 1 and the family does not clear the wait list by the

time the pool opens in May, we guarantee them a spot for the summer by saving a summer lease. The mem-

bership line is 703-532-0814 and the email is [email protected]. Please contact us with any membership questions you have. On a personal note--I will be stepping down as the membership maven after

12 years. Jessi Nadler has graciously agreed to take over. She will do a great job – please welcome her. It has been a true privilege to talk to so many delightful people over the years and brag about our wonderful club. I have been honored to work with some of the most dedicated volunteers on the SHBR board – people who have been so willing to give their time to make our club one of the most well run operations around. I would especially like to thank our amazing book-keeper, Beth Gilmore. We often laughed that between us we had one brain but there is no way I could have done this job without her. I wish you all a Happy New Year – and see you at the pool!!
