WHAT IS SLAP?

SLAP - Second Language Acquisition Program

SLAP (Second Language Acquisition Program) is AIESEC UWAʼs newest project; an on-campus opportunity for students to learn a language of their choice (French or Spanish for Semester 2, 2012) through an innovative, interactive approach. Students will have the opportunity to interact with and work with people from different cultures in an educational and friendly environment. Through SLAP, AIESEC UWA hopes to establish a learning program aimed at increasing intercultural understanding whilst providing valuable lifelong skills that will benefit students even after graduation.

Languages offered in 2012:

Two separate surveys were conducted across the UWA campus in late 2011 for SLAP to determine studentsʼ interest in learning a foreign language, and which languages are most popular. With that, we were able to deduce that languages that students preferred the following:

• French • Spanish

Mission statement:

With SLAP we hope to establish an extra-curricular learning program at the University of Western Australia campus, enriching student life and increasing cultural awareness, while providing an affordable and quality firsthand teaching program. The classes will be small, allowing for a large amount of direct interaction with the teachers, who live and breathe their language and are passionate about teaching and learning the Australian culture. In addition to structured classes, cultural events such as movie viewings and conversational classes, will complement the language classes, thus producing a well -rounded cultural, fun and educational program.

II. SO WHY CHOOSE SLAP?

1. Time is not a problem anymore

We understand how difficult it is to fit in extra commitments into your busy lives. More often than not, schedules for language classes are fixed and taking the time to learn them now seems harder and very inconvenient.

At SLAP, we make learning a language much more convenient for you with:

• Flexible Hours We understand that during the semester it is hard to fit anything else into your lives with busy schedules at both uni and work, but at SLAP, we give YOU the opportunity to choose timings that suit your schedule and accommodate the preferred timings chosen.

2. Our quality instructors are enthusiastic, native speakers

People always say that the best way to learn a language is to actually go overseas and live as a local for at least a couple of months. However, for most of us, as students, we do not at the moment have the means to go overseas YET.

With SLAP, you donʼt have to go overseas to learn a language from the locals – we bring them to Australia to teach you!

Experienced native speakers who are dedicated and passionate about sharing their language and culture with YOU will be conducting the classes!

And to help to ease your worries regarding the quality of classes delivered, SLAP UWA are fortunate to have representatives from the Arts Faculty of UWA on our advisory and review board to ensure utmost quality of the course structure and teachers conducting the classes.

3. You will get personalised, individual attention

SLAP aims to make learning a new language as fun and interactive as possible. And to ensure that is achieved, small classes with only up to 8- 10 students per class will be conducted. This is essential to ensure that classes will be interactive and will focus on providing students with the skills they need to be able to communicate confidently.

In addition to that, teachers will be available for consultation to assist you with any course contents or general enquiries regarding the language you are learning.

4. We make learning a language as practical as possible.

Learning a language does NOT solely rely on textbooks or online lectures.

At SLAP, students will be given the opportunity to acquire basic language skills through a themed-based structure, including travel, family and leisure. They will explore cultural understandings, which are critical when travelling overseas to French or Spanish speaking countries, compare cultural differences and also examine the influences of respective cuisines and popular festivals and events in French and Spanish-speaking countries.

Ultimately, students will develop the knowledge, skills and intercultural competence to communicate simple opinions, experiences and acquire basic vocabulary, language and communication skills.

SLAP is NOT a formalised teaching course so we are strongly encouraged to make the learning interactive and fun!

5. We offer a quality, comprehensive language program at affordable prices The entire introductory language program will last for 10 weeks, starting in Week 2 of Semester 2, 2012. Contact Hours: 2 Hours/Week (Monday – Thursday) Consultation Hours: Friday That in total will accumulate to 20 hours of structured classes at an affordable price of $140/ Course. Hence, it will only cost a bare minimum of $7/Hour!

6. We offer a fun and relaxing environment with many social/cultural activities

At SLAP, weʼll bring you as much exposure to the language as possible by hosting lots of exciting and unique social and cultural events throughout the course.

We believe the ultimate goal of running a language program is to help you be able to understand the language and its context and what better way is there than giving you a real taste of some of the unique aspects of Spanish and French culture?
