Skyrunning races were pioneered by Italian mountaineer Marino Giacometti in the early 1990s on Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc, and Monte Rosa in the Italian Alps. In 1995, he founded the Federation for Sport at Altitude to create official skyrunning rules. Since then, races have flourished to more than 200 worldwide with about 30,000 participants from 54 countries. Today, the sport is managed by the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF). Skyrunning on an international scale is defined as a traverse on mountains above 2000m and with inclines exceeding 30 per cent. The Skyrunner World Series includes five of each race style, the Vertical Kilometre, Sky Race and Ultra Sky Race. The Skyrunning World Championships take place every two years, with the next in 2016. The Skyrunning UK series now has five events and will expand next year. Britain has produced some top sky runners – including 2005 World Series champion Rob Jebb and the 2006 and 2007 female SWS winner Angela Mudge, from Scotland. In recent years, Tom Owens, Ricky Lightfoot, Andy Symonds and Anna Lupton have been succesful. See www.skyrunninguk.com and www.skyrunning.com
