Skyrim: 16 Awesome Easter Eggs And
References You Totally Missed
http://www.gamebasin.com/news/skyrim-16-awesome-easter-eggs-and-
references-you-totally-missed
You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d seen everything Bethesda’s frozen masterpiece had to offer
being it’s been two whole years since the initial release. But with that being said, we all knew when
exploring the game’s vast landscapes that there were bits and pieces we were missing along the
way – that overarching feeling that you’d never see everythingthe world had in it. Featuring one of
the best mission‐generating gameplay systems ever put in an RPG, Skyrim has always cobbled
together random interactions for the sake of making you visit far off locations you didn’t realise
had something worthwhile to offer. However, this time round we’ve put together a list of
sights you’ll have to seek out yourself, as they’re the ones that would only make themselves
known after every inch of the game has been thoroughly combed over. Everything from old school
game references, movie quotes, fairytales and real world folklore is present here, with the feeling
that even after you’ve read what’s contained within – there’s probably still something else out
there nobody’s found yet. So don your Daedric armour and dive back in, as we challenge even
those that have already put many hundreds of hours into the game to not be surprised at what’s
hiding in the farthest corners of the land.
16. Dragonborn In Wonderland
Starting off with one of the most common references – but only if you were able to locate The
Mind of Madness side‐quest. Located inside Solitude, as you journey into the depths of Pelagius’
mind you’ll find many esoteric and off the wall lines of dialogue, but the most striking visual
accompaniment to the whole thing is when you come across this little Mad Hatter tribute.
Featuring food that’s actually edible and a Sheogorath character who talks only in barely
understandable jibberish, you can hang out in this little area for quite some time breathing it all in
before carrying on with what you’re supposed to be doing.
15. The Minecraft Mt. Everest Pickaxe
Starting out with one of the most talked about secrets in the game; not because of its very nature
as a tucked‐away collectible, but more because it relates to an eery real life story. You see,
the ‘Notch’ pickaxe that’s left sticking out the top of the Throat of the World mountain is a direct
reference to two things: Firstly the creator of Minecraft Marcus ‘Notch’ Persson, who already many
will remember pushing the iconic Minecraft pickaxe into pop culture as a staple tool in the series.
Secondly though, many think the Notched Pickaxe is in reference to climbers George Mallory and
Andrew Irvine who went missing when scaling Mt. Everest back in 1924. Although Irvine’s body
was eventually recovered in 1999, Mallory remains missing somewhere up in the hills – with the
only remnant of their combined efforts being a pickaxe stuck in the side of the mountain. Very
spooky indeed.
14. Pac-Man Lives!
Bet you didn’t expect to see old pizza‐face in Skyrim hmm? You can actually create a version of the
above scene yourself if you’re a dab hand at rearranging objects to represent Pac‐Man chasing a
line of yellow pellets. However, if you travel to Endon’s House in Markarth you’ll find the above
foodstuffs laid out in such a way that it can only be a nod to the original pill‐muncher himself, albeit
in a far less animated state than the natural 2D version.
13. Star Trek’s Wide Arms
As you’d expect the crew of game programmers at Bethesda are most righteous bunch of nerds,
dropping in a reference to the mecha of all things geekular; Star Trek. It’s one that only the most
devoted of fans will understand due to its otherwise obscure nature, but we’re sure the intention
was in there. So, if you take the trip to Ivarstead’s Inn you’ll come across one Temba Wide‐Arm, a
large lady who’s in need of your help. However her name is actually derived from a certain Star
Trek: The Next Generation episode, where an ancient race of aliens regale the crew with a story
about “Temba” with “his arms wide”. Of course the similarities end there as you’ll be off fighting
bears in no time to help her out of her predicament, which is definitely not something the
Enterprise crew ever had to deal with.
12. The Room Of Death
Hidden deep underground, away from all the dragons, mammoths and demons… is a weird rave‐
like room full of half‐naked bodies. As you do. Okay so this one is kind of terrifying, especially when
you realise that all the bodies inside this place are notable characters you’ve probably talked to or
been on a quest with. However, rather than appear here as they were in the main game they’ll
have had all their items unequipped, flopping around next to you in what can become an entire
sea of bodies if so many have died in the main game. This luxury is only accessible on the PC version
of the game as you need to tinker with some command prompts, but to be honest aren’t you glad?
If you’d somehow stumbled upon this place in a regular playthrough it’s enough to make you run
for the hills.
11. Snow White And The Seven Dwarves
Time for some fairytale adventuring, and clearly someone at Bethesda was a Snow White fan, being
that if you head to Blackreach and then to the War Quarters you’ll come across seven beds all
encircling a small flame. In addition to this, the chamber leads through to a much larger bed on the
connecting side, completing the reference. That being said though, why create this reference in
the dank aquarium‐esque surroundings of Blackreach? It’s about as far as you can get from the
otherwise whimsical nature of the original fairytale. Still cool, though.
10. King Leonidas’ Slain Sabre-Tooth Cat
Proving that the references here are far and wide, Bethesda included one to 2006 Spartan‐fuelled
action‐romp 300, being that if you head west of Karthwasten and go halfway up the mountain
you’ll come across this slain sabre‐tooth tiger, laid to rest in between two other cliff faces. Sadly
you’ll have to do a fair bit more searching to come across a living tiger to do battle with (or get your
face mauled off in the process), but in addition there’s also a skeleton of who we assume is
supposed to represent King Leonidas just in front of the fallen creature. Although he’s definitely in
much worse shape than he was in the film.
9. Lord Of The References
Thousands of us felt a LOTR‐sized twinge when choosing sides and taking the fight to either the
Stormcloaks or the Imperials ‐mostly thanks to a suitably Howard Shore‐sized score underpinning
everything. Of course this is exactly what Bethesda were going for, and following the battle
depending on where your allegiances lie either Hadvar or Ralof will mention that they have “killed
more than you” as “they were counting”. As the battle that has just ended, it’s a clear reference to
the comments shared by Legolas and Gimli throughout the series. Not only that though, Gollum’s
iconic “My precious” phrase makes an appearance when you travel to see Moira the hagraven at
Witchmist Grove. As your quest is to retrieve a ring from her, she can be heard saying Smeagol’s
iconic phrase as the two of you do battle.
8. A Lannister…. Doesn’t Belong Here
Although the Game of Thrones TV show has become something of a cultural behemoth, the Song
of Ice and Fire novels far predate Skyrim, instead most likely being something that members of the
team were reading as they coded various parts of the game. So, if you manage to survive the Cidhna
Mine Thonar Silver‐Blood will remove his family ring and present it to you, uttering the
Lannisteriffic words “A Silver‐Blood always pays his debts”. Sure this phrase has become more
synonymous with the likes of Peter Dinklage and his incredibly enjoyable character Tyrion Lannister,
it was also used in the books, therefore it’s no surprise it showed up somewhere in the fantastical
world of Skyrim.
7. Excalibur’s Lady Of The Lake
The first of two King Arthur references, and one that if you’re unfamiliar with the idea of an
underwater mistress presenting our hero with a sword in an outstretched arm, it probably just
struck you as one of Skyrim’s many hilarious glitches. However being that the set piece is plain to
see in everyone’s version of the game, you need only journey northeast of Bleakwind Basin to come
across it yourself. The sword is removable, but like all the other weapons you can acquire through
these easter eggs it probably won’t replace your signature weapon if you’re far into the game.
6. Sword In The Stone
In addition to the previous point, a more instantly‐recognisable symbol that connotes the legend
of King Arthur is the sword in the stone – the removal of which is something that Bethesda are
more than happy to let you take a crack at. Although there are no benefits to removing the blade,
if you visit Rebel’s Cairn and locate the sword, you can take it away with you. To be honest it’ll go
nicely with the #3 on our list…
5. The Shawshank Redemption Barter
Just to round out the list of references spanning all corners of the media spectrum, there’s a line
of dialogue spoken while inside the Winterfold college that’s almost a direct quote from Tim
Robbins’ Andy Dufresne character from Shawshank. As in the film our hero is trying to obtain
certain items to better help him in his quest, and when conversing with Enthir one of your dialogue
options will be “I understand you’re an elf who knows how to get things”, which immediately
connotes the similar line from the movie. Sadly Enthir isn’t voiced by Morgan Freeman though,
maybe something for Skyrim 2?
4. The ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Book –
Kolb And The Dragon
The level of detail in Skyrim was always astounding. From that first reveal of the mountainous
landscape that unfurled before you as you took off down a cliffside to a random mission, to the
game having an actual library of titles you can literally sit and read through, it’s no surprise
Bethesda are taking their sweet time with Fallout 4. Speaking of these texts though, one Kolb And
The Dungeon is a bonafide Choose Your Own Adventure book, meaning that in between a spat of
dragon‐slaying you can sit down and indulge in a little literature. Found at multiple spots
throughout the game, Kolb’s story is a one filled with certain death and sadness, with only one
ending actually turning out remotely positively. Of course you’re free to just look up the text and
save yourself the bother of tracking down the book in‐game.
3. Star Wars Hoth Set-piece
This could be something of a stretch for some, but going off just how easily the above scenario
resembles that of Luke Skywalker’s actions on Hoth in Empire Strikes Back, we think it’s still a neat
find. Many will remember the scene in the Wampa Cave where Luke dangles precariously from the
ceiling, willing himself to get his lightsaber to come to him – yet here we see some hapless
individual who clearly wasn’t so lucky. There is a sword you can grab off the ground to use yourself
too, but aside from carrying it under your own label of “That Star Wars Sword” it has no other
special properties – just do the ‘lightsaber noise’ yourself!
2. The Headless Horseman
Chances are some of you came across this spirit‐version of the Headless Horseman back when you
were first exploring Skyrim, yet reconciled it to “just some crazy thing you see” when roaming
around in the dead of night. However although the Horseman is a very flighty sort, if you can track
him long enough you’ll finally come across a dilapidated gravesite, complete with a huge amount
of loot to get stuck into. Sadly there’s no dialogue options or boss encounters though, despite many
of us thinking that pursuing him across half of the entire map would deliver such a thing.
1. Three Billy Goats Gruff – Finding The
Troll
Ardent Oblivion‐players may already recall a certain suicidal troll that could be found underneath
a bridge in that game, although this time around we don’t get a (actually pretty funny) suicide note
accompanying the body. As a quick reminder or reveal to those who never found that initial easter
egg, here’s the note that was found on his corpse:
Mee wurst troll evurr nobuddy pay brijj tole me nott sceary enuf mee gett drunc an kil sellf troll
droun
Back to Skyrim though, and you can actually come across a re‐enactment of the Three Billy Goats
Gruff fairytale, complete with third goat emerging from underneath the bridge and a deceased
troll underneath. See below for the full version of events, or journey to the stone bridge to the
south of Markarth – but beware; you only get one shot at seeing this little secret play out, so keep
your eyes peeled when in the area.
