WINTER IS HERE

Iryna LegkaBy Lynn Armstrong

“GivinG back has always been a part of my life. It is something that my parents believed in and instilled in me growing up,” says Iryna Legka. Born and raised in Ukraine, Iryna came to Regina on a scholarship at the University of Regina, where she earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Regina.

“Making a choice to give back is a question of values, and knowing the answer to the question, ‘who am I’. Being a part of the community and helping in any way that I can has always been very important to me.”

Iryna recently served on the Red Cross “Power of Humanity” Gala Committee, which recognizes the people in our community who have had a giving impact. “It is inspiring to meet people who give selflessly to improve the lives of others. I want to have that kind of impact on people too. It is important to me to give my time and skills to help the community. It is a privilege to be able to help.”

“My employer, Deloitte, really cares about giving back, and I get involved in those initiatives too. We set aside a day where we stop being accoun-tants, business analysts and project managers and give our time to sup-port various community organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, the Food Bank, the Humane Society and a number of schools.”

“It is a question of values. It is important to me to be part of the community and to be able to make a meaningful contribution. Giving back feels good. It also makes us human. I have travelled all over the world but I have never felt such a strong community presence and sense of belonging like I do in Saskatchewan - it is the kind of place where people genuinely care about each other.”

A smile. A chance. A message. A dream. A gift. Giving is a choice. An awareness that we all connected. That we are bigger than ourselves. That one person can make a difference by simply giving to another.

This issue is dedicated to giving, celebrating those who give of themselves, selflessly and without question, whose giving goes beyond the measure of lists and money, but that reaches into the very heart and soul of who we are.

SKY Magazine is always about doing good things, and the people who live in vision. This holiday season, my wish for you is that you give from your heart, and give to make a difference in the life of another person.

Dr. Roberta McKay is festively adorned on the runway of the Moustache Bash in a full red skirt with gold flowers designed and created by Dean Renwick for the event. Mr. Elmer Brenner stands proudly beside

his partner of 24 years in giving and in life, dressed in a polka dot vest and white fedora. They are asked to share what philanthropy means to them to a room of 200 onlookers.

“We have been very fortunate,” says Dr. Roberta McKay. “Over the past few years, we have focused on supporting fashion and art. We give back to those who give to ‘us’ – the artists, the designers, the painters . . .” They went on to say, “it’s all about the stories that can be lived and told, the relationships that can be created, and the untold impact that giving as an act of kindness can have on another person.”

Roberta and Elmer are presenting sponsors of the Moustache Bash, a fashion show / fundraiser that raises funds for the Prostate Assessment Centre in Regina and the brainchild of Dean Renwick, owner of Dean Renwick Design Studio and Renwick label. The ‘Bash’ is the perfect combination of fashion, health and mentorship.

Their resume of giving is extensive, including large donations to raising funds for health related concerns, fostering the development of a new industry or sponsoring a children’s program at the local library. Like true philanthropists, their giving is not about making lists. It is an attitude, a way of life, and a journey.

This night on the runway of the Moustache Bash began in 2012 when Roberta and Elmer became involved in Saskatchewan Fashion Week through their relationship with fashion designer Dean Renwick. In 2013, they funded the Emerging Designer Award, an honorarium given immediately after the conclusion of the Saskatchewan Fashion Week (SFW) runway program.

“The Emerging Designer Award gives young designers of Saskatchewan a chance for recognition and a great sense of accomplishment. We funded the Emerging Designer Award to help the recipient take that next step in his or her career.”

In 2013, the award was given to Riley Lawson, and in 2014, Janis Procyk received the award.

“As someone just starting out, the Emerging Designer Award gave me the resources to fund my 2015 spring / summer collection. I was able to put my 2014 fall/winter collection online, purchase a new camera to do my own photo shoots and invest in marketing and the tools that I needed. They were willing to let me do what I needed to do and Roberta is always asking how I am doing. She is genuinely interested and that support makes a big difference,” says Janis.

A Matter of the Heart:

Dr. Roberta McKay and Mr. Elmer BrennerBy Lynn Armstrong

Roberta and Elmer share a passion for culture and the arts, which led them to become a part of the Executive Leadership Committee of ‘Building Knowledge - College Avenue Campus Renewal Project’ to which they donated $250,000.

“We love the College Avenue Campus. It was the cultural centre of Regina. We wanted to be part of preserving and restoring the College Avenue campus heritage buildings.”

In 2014, they gave the gift of music to the Campus with the donation of a Fazioli Concert Grand Piano to be used in Darke Hall. Again, it was the process of getting involved and being part of the music community that brings a spark to their eye.

“We travelled to Italy, where we met world-renowned classical pianist Angela Hewitt who once played in Darke Hall. It was really something to go through the process of watching her select the perfect piano to match the acoustics of Darke Hall.”

“It is really a work of art. The piano is now available for concert pianists to play. Beyond the beauty of the piano, the music has returned to Darke Hall.”

“Giving is something everyone can do. It does not have to be about giving a lot of money, or grand gestures. Often times, it’s the smallest acts of kindness that have the greatest impact on others. It can be about helping someone take that next step in their career, or simply recognizing kindness in others.”

Roberta and Elmer founded the Saskatchewan Health Care Excellence Awards (SHEA) to raise funds for AIDS - South Saskatchewan and recognize the people working in health care regardless of their job. Anyone can be nominated from across the province.

“Each year we meet the most amazing people and share the stories of how their giving affects the lives of people,” says Elmer. “We met a Cree nursing aide who had been nominated by seniors in the nursing home. She drove all the way to Regina from Northern Saskatchewan in a snow storm to attend SHEA.”

“It is very touching to see how powerful kindness is. I remember a dietary aide who was battling cancer. The seniors who nominated her said she was ‘a ray of sunshine in their lives.’ She lost her battle to cancer before the award ceremony, but her husband came to accept the award for her posthumously.

“We believe that random acts of kindness can make all the difference in the world. It’s the small things that we remember. The times that someone thought enough of us to send a card, or say hello, or give us what we are too proud to ask for. Giving is just that. Giving without expectation of anything in return.”

The Business of SuccessBuilding value into your business. When selling your home, you want top dollar, so you make sure its clean, the paint is fresh and any obvious defects are corrected. The same applies to your business. Building a business for success is about building value in the business, so that some day, when you want to sell it, you get top dollar.

The first step is determining what the value of your business is currently. Once you understand the factors that drive value, you can then determine what to improve, change, or build on to increase the value. Business owners often think that their businesses are worth more than they are because they look at what the business is worth to them – a combination of hard work, heart and soul. But an investor will look at the business differently. A Chartered Business Valuator can assist you in determining your business’s current worth,

which will give you insight as to what you can do to improve your business value.

We know that your business can be your family’s single largest asset, which is why we ensure that your family goals are aligned with your business structure and strategies. We strive to continually provide advice and strategies to ensure that you and your family realize the maximum amount of value that your business can provide. We conduct business valuations and help our clients build successful businesses that serve their life goals. Contact us for consultation. This article is supplied by L.A. Larson & Associates Ltd. Becky Panter is the mother of three children living in Oxbow, Saskatchewan and the force behind Saskatchewan Angel Dresses, a nonprofit organization that helps families heal who have lost a child.

“Our fourth child Christopher was born sleeping, and loved so very much,” Becky says. “I wanted to help other families in their grief so I created Saskatchewan Angel Dresses.”

“I organize seamstresses, collectors and dress donations from Saskatchewan to be made into tiny dresses for little angels that don’t come home, whether through miscarriage, stillbirth, premature, or complications,” she explains.

“This way, the parents have a beautiful outfit for their final goodbye to their angel. The dresses are sewn with love and dropped off at hospitals and funeral homes all around Saskatchewan.”

Saskatchewan Angel Dresses has delivered to 90% of hospitals and 40% of funeral homes around Saskatchewan with the help of her amazing team. Becky’s strength has built incredible awareness and support of pregnancy and infant loss.

“Those interested in Saskatchewan Angel Dresses can email me at [email protected]. They can also follow me on Facebook.”

Desiree Rattray: Iron Will In 2013, the Heroes’ Makeover Team, (formerly Mother of all Makeovers) celebrated Desiree Rattray, mother of baby Will who fought valiantly, but who lost his battle on August 28, 2013.

In Will’s memory, Desiree and her husband Jason formed a committee called “Friends of Iron Will” to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. “We have raised approximately $135,000 through various initiatives including 22Fresh t-shirt and hoodie sales, the Iron Will Family Day and being recognized as this year’s Scotiabank Game Changer. There were many fundraisers this year in honor of Will, some we’ve been involved in, some we have not, such as the Farmer’s Filthy Five in Stenen, Hayden’s Big Bike Ride in Nipawin, and the Run for Iron Will in Edmonton. We have also received corporate and individual donations in memory of Will too. The outpouring of support has been amazing. More is planned for 2015. We’re not done yet.”

To follow and support Iron Will, visit the “In Memory of Iron Will Rattray” Facebook page.

What I would do if I could not fail:

I would publish stories that are read world-wide about interesting and inspiring people who live and work in their passion. I would be an instigator of personal freedom. I would inspire people to accept and live in their own vision, and be inspirational to others to do the same. I would publish the book that changes the way we look at work. I would inspire a revolution of living in colour. I would paint the sky all the colours of possibility.

George Reed Foundation Mosaic Gala

presented by Wheatland Roofing

On behalf of the George Reed Foundation, we would like to thank our friends and sponsors who helped to make the fourth annual Mosaic Gala presented

by Wheatland Roofing a success.

Dr. George Reed – The Gift of Communication“We began this journey in 1980 when Subhas Maharaj, a Saskatchewan Speech Pathologist, approached the George Reed Foundation for assistance in marketing his Pictogram Program. Subhas was on a mission to help people unable to communicate via the spoken word, and we were happy to help,” said George Reed as he accepted the Outstanding Philanthropist Award on National Philanthropy Day, November 12, 2014, hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Regina Chapter.

Just a few days earlier, on October 23, 2014, George would see the launch of the George Reed Centre for Accessible Visual Communication (GRC) bringing the vision of visual communication to life.

“The George Reed Centre for Accessible Visual Communication is a new initiative at the University Regina, funded by the George Reed Foundation. The mission of the GRC is to foster, coordinate, and promote research activities in accessible, visual and inclusive communication. The GRC intends to serve as the focal point for Pictogram research provincially, nationally, and internationally. The Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies is pleased to house the GRC, particularly as the GRC complements the faculty’s academic and community programs while honoring the historical and charitable engagement that Mr. George Reed has had with Kinesiology & Health Studies,” says Dr. Vianne Timmons, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Regina.

The George Reed Foundation is also a proud supporter of Special Olympics Saskatchewan and Mother Teresa Middle School, as well as other initiatives in the community. Funds are raised through sponsorship, as well as the Foundation’s annual Mosaic Gala, presented by Wheatland Roofing in December and the George Reed Classic Golf Tournament in the Fall.

“Seeing our vision come to life is remarkable. Not only can we help one person. We can help many. We are at the beginning of a new chapter in this story, and we are very thankful to Dr. Vianne Timmons and her team for working with us to make this happen and to Subhas for his vision.” – Dr. George Reed, Chair, George Reed Foundation
