WHAT CAUSES SKIN PIGMENTATION? Melanin gives our skin its colour, whether dark or light complexioned, we all have varying amounts of melanin in our skin. Pigmented lesions are dark in colour simply because the melanin has become abnormally localized and concentrated on one area of the skin. High concentrations of melanin arise from several causes. Some types are present at birth however most pigmentation occurs as a result of overexposure to the sun’s damaging rays, ageing, hormonal changes (Melasma) arising from several causes including some oral contraceptives, or pregnancy (Chloasma). We are now very aware of the adverse effects of over exposure of the sun. Subsequently, modern sun screens and other skin care products are now directed at preventing or minimising damage to our skin arising from normal sun exposure as well as “sun-bathing”. While protection from the sun remains the best prevention from sun spots and related sun-damage skin disorders, there are treatments available for those already suffering from “photo-aging”. Although most brown spots are easily ignored, many are quite conspicuous and can detract from your skin’s natural beauty and your feelings of well-being and esteem. Pigmentation removal depends on the type, location, and cause of the pigmentation.

SOLAR PIGMENTATION Solar lentigos, as the name indicates, is a direct result of sun exposure — the skin is reacting to the UV (Ultra Violet) rays from the sun. Many of us have endured sunburns (the acute form of sun damage to the skin), and the reality is that the effects of sun-damaged skin increase with age. Over time we note the gradual changes (chronic) in our skin caused by the accumulation of sun exposure.

SUN DAMAGE REMOVAL Freckles are predominantly found on the face, although they can also appear on any part of the body exposed to the sun, including the hands and the shoulders. Freckles are commonly seen in children and some people associate them with an appearance of being younger.

The formation of freckles is triggered by exposure to sunlight. The exposure to UV-B radiation causes our body to increase melanin production which usually causes freckles to become darker.

Upon exposure to the sun, freckles will reappear if they have been altered with creams or lasers and not protected from the sun. However freckles usually fade as we grow older and with reduced exposure to the sun.

Freckles are not a skin disorder however while some people view freckles as enhancing a youthful look, some view freckles as blemishes and seek treatment to reduce their appearance.

HOW IT WORKS

There are several different Cynosure lasers, including the newest picosecond laser, PicoSure. This laser can remove a variety of unwanted pigments such as age spots, freckles and birthmarks.

DOES IT HURT?

Most patients find the procedure tolerable and require no numbing cream or anesthesia. They often compare the laser pulse to a snap of a thin rubber band.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT

Most pigmented lesions will require only few treatments to be completely removed. Darker, deeper and larger pigmented lesions may require additional treatments. Please discuss with your physician.

Using the principle of selective photothermolysis light-based treatment targets different chromophores in the skin. Chromophores selectively absorb the laser or light energy as heat and yield the desired response.

These optimal wavelengths of light clear pigmented lesions by targeting melanin. The damaged pigmented lesions are then cleared by the body. They undergo a mild desquamation and slough off, removing the appearance of the lesion from the skin.

HORMONAL PIGMENTATIONTREATMENT FOR PIGMENTATION REMOVALCorrect analysis is important to ensure that you receive the best and most appropriate therapeutic treatment. The pigment can be near the surface – which is easier to remove, or deeper in the skin – which is harder to remove.

ARE THERE ANY PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE DURING LASER TREATMENT?As with all laser treatment you must avoid exposure to direct sunlight before treatment, during treatment and for some weeks following laser treatment. At City Laser Clinic our experienced qualified laser therapists will advise you based on your skin type and the nature of the laser treatments that you are receiving. SPF 30+ must be worn daily.

SOME IMAGES OF PIGMENTATION REMOVAL RESULTSIn most clients, the pigmentation is found to be at different levels within their skin and requires further laser treatment. Generally, the longer the pigment has been present, the more difficult it is to remove however satisfactory reduction can be achieved for most people.
