SkillsUSA Kentucky2017 State Leadership & Skills Championship

TO: All SkillsUSA Chapters, Advisors & School Administrators

FROM: Larry Johnson, SkillsUSA Kentucky Director

DATE: February 24, 2017

SUBJECT: SkillsUSA Kentucky State Conference Information and Registration Packet

The 2017 SkillsUSA Kentucky State Leadership Conference & Skills Championship is almost here. I hope your regional events have been exciting and rewarding or highly anticipated. The 2017 SkillsUSA State Officers and the Frankfort staff are working to ensure a great SkillsUSA KY State Conference. This year’s theme is Champions at Work: “Preparing America’s Skilled Workforce”.

By attending the state conference, your students will benefit from the positive leadership activities during the State Conference. Students will have an opportunity to be among business and industry partners, many are looking for employees. Students attending the state conference may have an opportunity for on-site interviews, traveling, meeting new people, gaining new insights, and having a lot of fun (Do you do Karaoke?).

The conference will provide you with a variety of opportunities. These opportunities include networking with other professionals and guest speakers or obtaining your KY Statesman pin. Above all, you will share the thrill of competitive events and the conference atmosphere with your students.

Another important part of the State Conference is the SkillsUSA KY Congress. Students meet to discuss topics that may affect their chapters and members for years. This is the decision making body of Kentucky SkillsUSA. Also, have student(s) send in an application to become a Kentucky SkillsUSA State Officer and be part of the leadership team. Students can attend the conference in one of these roles without having won a local or regional competition. Please encourage your students to take advantage of one of these important Kentucky SkillsUSA roles.

Delegates or Courtesy Corps members’ registration fee is $40 each instead of $90 for students competing (All student attendees must be registered and participate in something). If a student competes in any contest the registration fee will be as a competitor.

This information packet will assist you in registering for the 2017 State Conference. Offer your students as many opportunities as possible and watch them grow in their confidence and abilities.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:

All KY SkillsUSA Conference registration forms must be postmarked by March 24, 2017 to SkillsUSA KY State Office.

Crowne Plaza room reservations must be submitted to the Crowne Plaza by March 27, 2017. There is another large group in Louisville during April 19-22, 2017. Make your reservations ASAP! There MAY NOT be any rooms available AFTER the DEADLINE.

On behalf of KY SkillsUSA, the KY SkillsUSA State Officers & the KY SkillsUSA Board of Directors we look forward to observing students in action, showing their skills for all to see at the 2017 SkillsUSA Kentucky Leadership Conference and Skills Championship.

Larry R Johnson, SkillsUSA Kentucky State Director

Alert: There is another large group of students competing in Louisville at the same time as SkillsUSA Kentucky this year (VEX). It is essential to not delay reserving your room at the Crowne Plaza . Make sure your reservations are in to Crowne Plaza by March 27, 2017 to ensure you have a room. It is a quick turnaround for us to process registration, identify chairs, find judges, order supplies/materials etc. and have everything to the contests chairs in a timely manner for their preparations.

Courtesy Corps Registration fee for Courtesy Corps and Conference Delegates is $40.00 only if the student is NOT competing. If a courtesy corps member or delegate is competing the above mentioned registration fee is applied.

It is imperative to have the National Registration completed in a timely manner. All Student registration and accompanying paperwork and payment must be in state office by May 10, 2017. The State SkillsUSA Office will prepare the DPR for the NLSC. I will have a DPR survey monkey for receiving DPR information for ATC schools. Time will be short so please submit your application to attend NLSC by April 28, 2017. Schools paying registration with a purchase order, provide the PO number on the registration summary form.

Advisor please assist students in preparing their resume and practice the knowledge test before the conference. Two or three point at the National Conference could be the difference between medaling and coming in 10th place. Give your student every chance they deserve to do their best at the National Conference.

learn basic presenting skills, communication skills, or prepare for workplace skills like interviewing, or personal skills to reinforce their technical skills. This is a leadership opportunity for all students. It promotes leadership, confidences and self-esteem.
