Skills Packet-Reading notes you need to know:

Root words: the most basic part of a word

Prefix: is a part of a word that is attached to the beginning of a root word

Suffix: is a part of a word that is attached to the end of a root word

Synonyms: a word that has the same meaning as another word. Example: talk, speak, and jabber.

Antonyms: a word that means the opposite of another word.

Homographs: words that are spelled the same but have different meanings.

Context clues: clues from the sentence you are reading & it helps you find the meaning of the word or phrase.

Content specific words: words or phrases that relate to a certain subject.

Fact: a statement that you can prove.

Opinion: a statement of what someone believes to be true about something.

Compare/contrast: understanding how something is like or unlike something we already know.

Cause/effect:

Cause: a person, thing or an event that makes something happen.

Effect: the result of the thing that happens.

Problem: something that needs to be solved.

Solution: the answer to a problem.

Headings: a title or a section.

Main idea: what a text is mostly about.

Inferences: when the author doesn’t have all the information & it’s left to the reader’s imagination to fill in the blanks.

Conclusions: forming an idea based upon the information the text provides.

Types of Test:

a. Narrative: writing with characters & events. A beginning, middle & end.b. Poetic: writing that is in groups called stanzas.c. Informational: intended to inform or explain.d. Persuasive: intended to persuade someone to do or believe something.

Title: name of book

Author: person who wrote the book.

Table of Contents: lists each chapter in order that appears in the book.

Index: lists different subjects & where to find them in the book.

Author’s point of view:

1. First person: the narrator using “I” & is part of the action.2. Third person: narrator is not part of the action & uses “he, she, it or they”.

Main character: the character the writer focused the most on.

Setting: when & where a story happens

Plot: sequence of the story:

1. Conflict: main problem2. Rising action: events leading up to the climax3. Climax: most exciting point or turning point of the story4. Resolution: where the conflict is resolved

Theme: Central idea or meaning of the story-lesson or morals learned.

Similes: are direct comparisons of one thing to another. Using the words” like or as”, “my grandmothers hands were as wrinkled as an old paper bag”

Metaphor: the writer expresses one thing by comparing it with another thing. “Reina is a troll in the morning”.

Personification: a writer will give an animal or object human qualities.
