    Skills Assignment Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. What information do we write in the rationale box?

    A. Why you chose this text. i.e. why you think it is a good text for your students.

    Q. And in the other boxes?

    A. The activities and your reason for doing them, including reference to background reading to support your reasons.

    Q. Our activities does it matter what order we do them in?

    A. Yes. Follow the Receptive Skills Procedure.

    Q. Is it enough to state that I would start by pre-teaching essential vocabulary?

    A. No. You need to detail which words and how you would pre-teach them.

    Q. Do we need to provide examples ofall of the activities and material along with the answers?

    A. Yes. We need a copy of any activities and material and the answers. We will evaluate the activities to see ifthey would work.

    Q. Is there a word count for this assignment?

    A. 750 -1000 words

    Q. What does "referencing" mean?

    A. When you write up your rationale for your task designs, we need to see that you have done some background

reading, which needs to be referenced by writing the authors name, year of publication and page number inbrackets, like this: (Scrivener 94:153) within the body of the assignment.

    Q. Is it OK to quote people like Harmer and Scrivener directly?

    A. Its fine to make a point and say as Harmer says which demonstrates your understanding of Harmers words. But we dont want you to copy entire paragraphs out of these reference books. We want to see how yourunderstanding of the theory relates to your own task design. This is why it is better for you to paraphrase and keepthe underlying theory relevant to your tasks. This is not an academic paper - keep it practical!

    Q. Is it ok to focus on a language area (e.g. gerunds/infinitives, the passive, vocabulary used toexpress x?

    A. No, not if all your tasks are based around language; this is a skills assignment.

Q .Do I have to cite the source of the text?

    A. Yes. And you should include a copy with your assignment. If its from the internet, you should include the web link.

    Q. I have found a great text but I think its too difficult for the students. Can I adapt it to make it easier?

    A. Yes. You can grade the text by making minor changes but remember that if you alter it radically, it may no longerread like an authentic text.
