As we continue to focus on the patients and families that need our services and expertise, we continue our mission of superior care and superior services to our community.

Healthcare Reform and HospiceBy Kent Anderson, President/CEO

reform is upon us, which creates uncertainty for all healthcare providers. While no one can say with confidence exactly how healthcare reform will affect hospice providers, of this I am confident: Hospice of Dayton and Hospice of Butler & Warren Counties will con-tinue to focus on being the absolute best in delivering end of life care to our community. What does being the best hospice provider mean? I am confident it includes the following:

• Having and providing the most comprehensive continuum of hospice services to our patients, families and community

• Establishing and delivering the best outcomes in pain and symptom management for our patients• Remaining community focused with programs like our Pathways of Hope and Innovative Care Solutions• Establishing and maintaining the highest levels of regulatory compliance• Recruiting, hiring, training and retaining the most expert staff, for every position in our organization• Advancing our level of clinical expertise and services• Being the best clinical and compliance partner with our community hospitals, ECFs, ALFs and physicians

Patients and families today have the same need to be free of suffering and to be assured of quality of life as those who benefitted from our services in the year of our founding, 1978. In the 35 years since, we have all learned to accept the life lesson that change is inevitable. As we con-tinue to focus on the patients and families that need our services and expertise, we continue our mission of superior care and superior services to our community. We will continue, each day to work to be the best hospice in the country. We are Hospice of Dayton and Hospice of Butler & Warren Counties.

Unexpected Benefits of Living a Compassionate Life

Your gift to help others offers you unexpected benefits!

Brenda C. Humfleet, President, Hospice of Dayton Foundation

the late 1950’s my family and I lived in a big, square, two-story frame house on a tree-lined street in East Dayton. Milk, eggs and ice were delivered to homes by delivery men that became as familiar a sight as our next door neighbors.

An older couple, with no children, lived next door. The bedroom my sister, Pam and I shared looked out on their backyard. Often we would see their “ice man” stroll up the back sidewalk wielding big tongs that held a giant block of ice. The ice was deposited in the Richardson’s icebox. We had a “modern” refriger-ator, as did all our other neighbors. Pam and I would venture over to the Richardsons on “ice day” because Mrs. Richardson would chip ice into small pieces and pour cherry juice

from her home-canned cherries over the ice. What a treat!

While eating our cherry-flavored ice, we would listen to the Richardson’s opera records. Mr. Richardson explained the stories associated with the music and his wife would show us how to make daisy-chain braclets. For years, Pam and I thought we were the ones who benefitted from these visits. When we were older, Mr. Richardson passedaway. We stopped by to visit with his widow and we told her how much we appreciated the time she and her husband spent with us as young children. She smiled and replied, “Oh, my dears, I want to thank you for allowing us to be a part of your life. We loved to hear your giggles and see your cherry-stained smiles.

We would have been so lonely if you had not stopped by to visit.” The generous gift of their time and attention made sweet memories for two little girls.

Hospice of Dayton did not exist when the Richardsons needed end of life care, however, when I make my gift to Hospice of Dayton, I feel like I’m “paying forward” their gift of kindness. When considering how you would like to help others who are facing life-limiting challenges, I hope you will see the benefits asso-ciated with giving your time through volunteerism or giving a gift in support of our services that are delivered with compassion and received with appreciation by patients and families. A gift to help others offers unexpected benefits. Thank you.

Little Things Mean A LotEvery day I go home with a new snapshot of something special that happened in our Hospice House.

Linda Corey Simpson, Hospice Houses Volunteer Specialist

“I have a Guardian Angel for you made by our wonderful volunteers.” Our patient’s eyes glistened with tears as the beaded, beribboned and winged shell found a place of honor in his room. “Honey, here’s to our last New Year’s Eve together” from a patient’s spouse toasting with the wine and cheese shared in our Hospice House that night.“My husband was so impressed with the crocheted lap blanket he received I am preserving it in a keepsake box, and put his thumbprint on the tag that came with it.”

put fresh flowers in patient rooms to brighten their day; drivers deliver birthday and anniversary bouquets and cakes to honor the event, we even provided 100 cupcakes to celebrate a 100th birthday.

These are but a few examples of the special moments created daily for our patients and families by the volun-teers of Hospice of Dayton. In 2012, four Gifts from Loving Hands groups hand crafted over 4,348 patient comfort items, plus 45 business and community groups contributed many additional gift items and services.

If you are interested in volunteering your time to enhance the lives of the patients of Hospice of Dayton, we provide several training opportunities a month. Please contact our Volunteer Services Department at 937-256-9507, ext. 1163.

Easing Suffering in EcuadorHospice of Dayton skills serve South America mission.

By Vicky Forrest, Director of Mission & Public Information

Hospice of Dayton mission to ease suffering and pain was extended to Ecuador this winter. Dr. Wendy Schmitz, Dr. Timothy MacLean and RN Colleen Postel joined a total of 29 Dayton area volunteers who participated in the mission trip.Over the course of eight days they addressed medical needs ranging from ear infections to a stab wound, and patients ranging in age from newborn to 96. The excursion was coordinated by Fairhaven Church in Ohio and an Ecuadorian church with involved volunteers from the Dayton area and from Indiana and California. Dr. Schmitz was impressed with the organization of the clinic. “We saw almost 3,000 people and there was no chaos. Each of us had an interpreter who helped us converse with patients. There were 50 volunteers who helped in directing patients from one service to another to make sure their needs were met.” Two brothers they treated had both sustained burns when they were playing with gasoline that ignited. A 96-year old lived in a one-room shack with a gravel floor and no bed. One man was fleeing an assault and ran into the clinic with fresh stab wounds. Earaches and toothaches were common among the children. Nutritional shortcomings have taken a toll on the entire community.

Schmitz was grateful for the support the group was able to provide to address those needs. “Thanks to donations from Hospice of Dayton and Hospice Pharmacia, we were able to provide Children’s Tylenol and Ibuprofen in the pharmacy we set up. Between Miami Valley Hospital and Kettering Medical Center, 60,000 multi-vitamins were provided for adults and children.”

group is part of the new Art Forever After program. The art activities are designed to enhance the expression of grief as well as art that cherishesthe memories of the deceased loved one. Different art media used include scrapbooking, drawings, ceramic and painting projects. One doesn’t have to be “artistically gifted” to make art or benefit from this innovative group. As one adult participant recently commented “I’m no artist, but I really made some nice things.” Nine children, six teens and 14 adults participated in the recent spring installment.

This

Drawn Together, the new art-based grief group, provides the opportunity for individuals and family members to make art with others.

Hospice of Dayton is collaborating with We Care Arts to provide this art based grief group in their art studio space. We Care Arts is located at 3035 Wilmington Pike in Kettering. Drawn Together will be offered in three month segments; February through April and September, 9th through November, 25th from 6:30-8:30 pm every Monday evening. This group is designed to be family friendly and multi-generational with ages 5 to 105 welcome. Facilitating the group will be Pathways of Hope’s Board Certified Art Therapist, Jonathan Haag LISW-S, ATR-BC. Drawn Together is free, but registration is required, please call Pathways of Hope at 937-258-4991 to register. Please consider joining us this fall.

A Memorial Dedication

Hospice of Dayton held its first memorial dedication in two years on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

was standing room only for the more than 200 people who had purchased either a brick or plaque as a way to remember and pay tribute to a loved one. The dedication program included music and prayer led by our Chaplain, Mollie Magee, and, Debbie Holt, a bereave-ment counselor from Pathways of Hope. As the names of the individuals being remembered were read, each person in the audience received a special glass heart to commemorate the day. At the end of the program, family and friends were led to the appropriate area of the grounds to view their loved ones’ memorial brick or plaque.

We currently have two new Memorial Plaque sculptures, which are located behind the Hospice House on Wilmington Avenue. As you can see from the photo, there are three plaque sizes – small, medium and large.

The cost and size of these plaques are as follows and are currently available:Small (4” x 6”) $150 Medium (5” x 7”) $225Large (6” x 8”) $575

If you would like more information about purchasing a Memorial Plaque for a loved one, please call Marsha Bernard at 937-723-2895 or email [email protected]. Our next dedication will be Sunday, October 13 at 1:00 pm.
