• Skill acquisition – the process of acquiring new skills through practice

• Skill retention – the ability of a performer to retain the learned skill over a period of time

• Skill – the ability of a performer to use the technique in a variety of different environments.

Distribution of Practice• Massed practice – This involves large amount of repetition of the same

technique with no, or minimal, alterations between each one. For example, the golfer hitting 100 balls on the driving range with the same club

• Blocked practice – a technique is repeated a set number of times (ie a block) then a different variation of the technique (or a different technique) is repeated for a block. For example, the basketball player shoots a block of 10 free throws, then 10 jump shots then 10 3-point shots etc

• Variable practice – a technique is executed once then a different technique (or variation of the same technique) is practiced

• Random practice – as variable but the forthcoming technique to be executed should be selected at random and not pre-prescribed.
