TRIP REPORTS for Park City, Aspen

And Jackson Hole

New officers … can you help?

Summer activities about to kick off…

are YOU ready?

The Prez Speaks…. Phil Buehler

Another great season of skiing has concluded. I hope you were able to enjoy one of the club’s great trips. Thank you Priscilla Johnson and the trips leaders for all of your efforts. Unfortunately we had a few injuries this year. Hopefully everyone heals fast and is able to ski again next year.

You should have received an e-survey for next year's trips. Please take a couple of minutes to complete the survey. Jean Ballinger, our new VP of Trips ,used the post-trip surveys to compile the e-survey. The e-survey reaches all club members, including those that were not able to participate in a club trip this year.

It was great seeing everyone at the Meltdown meeting earlier in April. For those who did not attend, here is a brief recap of the meeting. I reminded everyone that the By-Laws and Board meeting minutes are avail-able upon request through our website. Ray Battey talked about the OSVC Summit in Dayton this June. Don Birt gave a recap of the Winter Games for the Indiana Special Olympics at Perfect North in January. Priscilla Johnson gave a recap of the all the trips. Lisa Sindelar and Jackie Sundboom gave an in-depth re-view of the their trips to Jackson Hole and Park City.

Board members for the upcoming year are as follows:

Ann Daniel - President

Jean Ballinger - VP of Trips

Returning board members:

VP of membership- Marilyn Rader

Treasurer - Jackie Sundboom

Secretary – Ray Battey

New Officers for the board: VP of Trips elect – Lisa Sindelar

At the time of the meeting there were no candidates for president elect

The slate of new board members was approved unanimously.

Randy Ridgway graciously stepped forward after the meeting for the President-Elect Position.

A special thanks to all of members that help keep this club going. Thank you to the Finance committee member, Mel Crichton for the Boomer, our webmaster Martha Heinrich, John Oberlies for the Ski Rack, Shawn Ansari for ski instruction, and everyone else that helped in any way.

Remember to visit the ISC website for Thursday Thirst, Bicycle rides, Symphony on the Prairie, and other social events. The trip signup and picnic will on September 18th this year at the Indianapolis Sailing Club.

Enjoy your summer and be safe Phil

2016 Club Picnic moved to September this year

We (the board) are currently planning to have the annual ISC picnic in September rather than

August due to availability of clubhouse and also to allow time to arrange good air pricing for

trips (Southwest can only be booked less than 6 months in advance).

The date is Sunday, Sept 18—more info in the July SchussBoomer and on the website

This was a fantastic ski season. All of our trips out west were full of good weather, good snow and lots of fun. The early trip to Vail in January saw the smallest group we sent, and Park City in March was filled to the brim with 42 participants. It is great that so many of you chose to ski with the Indianapolis Ski Club this year and we hope to have all of you plus your friends join us next year. Two members received the FIVE STAR AWARD this year: Michael Wier and Kent Kitchel went on all five trips offered by our club and had smiles on their faces as they zoomed down the slopes. We have taken a look at your requests for next year and are working on times and places now. Remem-ber, the sign up picnic is SEPTEMBER 18 this year so it is later than usual. Be sure to put that date on your calendar so you too can join us on the slopes in 2017. I am pleased to have been your vice president of trips and will pass the baton into the capable hands of Jean Ballinger.

THANKS! For a great ski year. Priscilla

Jackson Hole 2016… Waffles? Yes, Waffles!!

Wash, rinse, repeat….I had so much fun leading our Jackson Hole trip in 2014, that it only made sense to do it again this year. And it did not disappoint - it was a great group of Jackson “regulars” (belt buckles and all), with new members, young members, and sibling members from Cincinnati and Lexington.

Our travel day was splendid, except for Craig Kleis (story to follow); a 7:55 am hopper to Chicago, walked off one plane, right on to the next flight, and arrived in Jackson around lunch time. We were able to pick up a few others traveling in on other flights, while Craig circled all of the baggage area, trying to find his ski bag. After many minutes, he decided to file a claim report at the United desk…to spy his bag behind the counter!

As expected, Jackie of the Parkway Inn was ready and excited to greet our group, with big smiles and hugs, and hot cider with brownie bites. Her staff is so awesome; they had our rooms ready when we arrived @ 1:15 pm….except for Craig Kleis and his roommate, Boone Glauert (new member). They checked their room, to find only a king size bed! Needless to say, it worked out for the better, as Jackie upgraded them to a “suite” room. However, when they got to the new room, Craig was missing a bag and running an elevated heart rate! Again, it all worked out, as their bags had not yet been transferred to the new room. But, it was an interesting day for Craig!

I can rave on about Jackie and the Parkway staff - they served a wonderful wel-come reception with wine/cheese/veggie/tea sandwich spread where we heard a Jackson Hole rep talk about the mountain and the 50th anniversary for the resort. If you ever go to Jackson, you must stay at the Parkway - they helped members set up excursions, spa times, dinner reservations, etc. They make the stay feel so personal and cozy.

Sunday was a day to chase the sun and find the soft stuff, but Monday yielded a few new inches of fresh powder…and the rest of the week was big crystal blue skies, warm temps, soft runs, and a lot of fun. It truly was a week for incredible views of the Tetons. A large group (14) ventured to Grand Tar-ghee on Tuesday and had a great time…it was a first with clear skies, no wind and the Tetons bursting from the top of the resort.

I give the group a lot of credit—they made the most of the area, as the Ka-bats snowmobiled Yellowstone; the Craig Bishop/Craig Forestal dynamic duo snowmobiled the off trails; Bo and Ewa went dog sledding; Bo and Corinne snow-shoed, guys with spa visits!; lots of dancing at Cowboy Bar; and many

nights shopping, dining and drinking at the local establishments. Heck, the Baker’s had so much fun at Targhee, they went back later in the week with David Zoelle!

Thursday night we had a fun pizza party in the cozy lobby of the Parkway, enjoying stories of the week and celebrating birthdays (Ron Habenicht, Boone Glauert, Dave Bossard).

I can safely say we all made it home with just minor soreness and bruises, but unfortunately a few suffered through a 24-hr stomach bug, keeping them in bed, rather than on the slopes. On Thursday, however, Ewa and I couldn’t avoid each other, traversing on a wide open trail and bouncing off each other like bumper cars! I managed to stay in my skis, but Ewa was a big bad “yard sale”, along with sliding many yards down the slope…thankfully, we laughed about it afterwards. But, on Friday, Ewa chose to ski by herself on the opposite side of the mountain, far away from me! And, girl, can she ski, having learned at the young age of 3 while growing up in Poland (the country, not the Indiana town!).

Many also enjoyed “ski tips” from Shawn Ansari…who was on the trip, then off the trip, then back on the trip all in matter of the few days before our departure.

So, you may wonder why “waffles” in the title? Because of the warm, sunny week, many of the group ventured to the very top via the Tram. Have you been on the tram? You stand, packed with 99 other crazies in a flying box, listen to hair-band 80’s music jamming overhead (ala Rolling Stones, etc). The ride is 9 minutes, skims the edge of Corbet’s Couloir, and as you approach the top, the resort rep yells out the obligatory “Rendezvous Bowl is for experts”, etc, etc, etc, ending with group response about backcountry skiing…“if you don’t know, DON’T GO”! At the top is a tiny, cozy shack called Corbet’s Cabin, known for their famous Waffles. I had only one, but could have eaten one every day! It is a thick, golden brown waf-fle, fresh from the griddle, lathered with your choice of stuffing, folded/pressed in half like a sandwich…it’s YUMMY! And, back to Craig Kleis…..he never let up asking all week as to when I would get him a waffle. Sorry, Craig, next trip! Some of our group rode the tram up, just to get a waffle, and rode the tram back down instead of doing Rendezvous Bowl. Steve Kissel and I capped off a great week, catching LAST TRAM, LAST DAY—Steve had not yet been up to the top, and he was

Ewa goes to the dogs

glad I suggested it.

Par for the course, we ended the days at the very popu-lar Mangy Moose Saloon, sharing stores of great runs…which reminds me of the smiles, laughs, and the fun ALL week for the group, in the breakfast lobby, on the shuttle bus, at lunch, at the Moose, and at the many group dinners.

I love Jackson, and nothing warms my heart more than helping others experience it (especially beginner/intermediate levels that think the mountain is too difficult for them). So, when can we do it again?!

VOLUNTEERS REWARDED (food!) Once a year your ski club board of directors and committee heads hold a “Transition Meeting” where duties are passed from outgoing folks to new incoming volunteers. The meeting is held at the Milano Inn which to many offers the best Italian food in the city (last year, Mario Andretti was eating dinner in the private room next to ours). The dinner is open to all members but is free for board members and committee heads (it’s the only remuneration we get all year, but it’s worth it). Your officers for the 2016 -17 year have been elected, but we can still use some help with committees. If interested, give President elect Ann Daniel a call. The Transition Meeting is at 6:00 on Tuesday, May 10th and the address of the

Biking the Monon By Ray Battey

The Ski Club’s 2016 biking season is underway. From Broad Ripple we have ridden downtown and the next week to north of Carmel. Both rides were followed by beers and lunch in one of the many res-taurants on the Monon Trail in Broad Ripple. Rides are generally Saturday or Sunday morning with a meet-up time at 9:30. If you haven’t ridden with us before, give it a try. Several of us have older back-up bikes we could lend to a new participant , if you want to try out the experience before committing to a new purchase. Rides are always on generally flat terrain. Let me know. Hope to see you soon.

Park City 2016 Jackie

Sundboom, trip leader

Park City/Canyons became the largest ski resort (in acreage) in North America when they com-bined last summer. There sure was a lot of variety in the runs available, especially when you include runs at neighboring Deer Valley ! People espe-cially liked that aspect of the trip.

We had fresh snow on Sunday (up high, but rain down low ), and also Tuesday night, so Wednesday was a great pow-der day! The weather was challenging, however, with spring-like temperatures all week. This made for decent morning skiing, and not so good afternoon skiing.

We stayed at the Park City Peaks Hotel, which was conveniently located at a stop on the free bus line. The hotel stay included free breakfast every morning in the breakfast room. There was a bar/restaurant in the hotel that was conven-

ient for drinks and quick meals. Also, free chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal cookies were really great after a hard day of skiing.

The hotel provided us with a Wine and Cheese orientation, and organized a trip to a hot springs, as well a trip to Salt Lake City to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearse. There was also a trip to a gour-met restaurant organized by the

hotel. All three trips were enjoyed by a number of club members. Unfortunately, the pool and hot tub at the ho-tel were under repair, but another pool and hot tub could be enjoyed with a short bus ride.

Our group of 41 was very compatible and seemed to enjoy each others’ company. We had several new members who were made to feel welcome. The Tri-State Ski Club from Evansville was at the same hotel, so it was great to reconnect with some of the people we skied with at Steamboat last year! Jennifer Rhamy joined us from Grand Junction for sev-eral days, so it was good to see Jennifer again!

The pizza party at the hotel great pizza provided by Da-vanza’s. Everyone enjoyed the pizza and had a good time.

I have to say that Deer Valley’s lunches beat Park City’s lunches hands down!

There was only one serious injury; fortunately it was at the end of the day Thursday, so not much skiing was missed! Mike Miller broke his tibia (leg bone) and wasn’t a happy camper for the remainder of the trip– So sorry, Mike!

Aspen Trip Report By Jean Ballinger, trip leader

Aspen has long been my favorite place to ski, and this trip confirmed it again. We had an afternoon flight, and Southwest was on time. After the usual stop at Applejack’s and Kings Sooper, we were on our way to Aspen. We stayed at The Gant, located at the edge of town. The club has stayed there often before, and everyone agreed that it’s a great lo-cation with helpful staff and wonderful amenities like the Gant shuttle van that will take you anywhere in town.

The weather was typical for spring skiing, with a little fresh snow mid-week to keep the slopes in great condition. Most of the group started

out the week at Buttermilk with a few going to Snowmass. The group skied at Snowmass on Monday. Tuesday was Aspen Mountain day, with a few heading back to Snowmass. Wednesday was Aspen Highlands day, with a few finding their way back to Snowmass again. Hint: Don’t plan to meet Kurt A. at Aspen Highlands!

The Gant’s welcome wine and cheese party was our après ski on Sunday. With wonderful hors d’oeuvres no dinner was needed afterwards. We had a BBQ dinner at Hickory House on Tuesday.

The family style meal provided plenty of food for hungry skiers!

We finished off the week at Snowmass with typical spring conditions: hard pack in the morning and slush in the after-noon. The Last Run Party gathering spot was at Gunner’s View in the Elk Camp area, organized by Mike K. Friday eve-ning we tried a new place called Square Grouper. Gerhard had arranged for some great entertainment. The food and drinks were good, too. A hearty thanks to Gerhard for making this happen!!

Aspen is a wonderful ski town with 4 mountains to ski, and lots of restau-rants and shopping. The end-of-season sales were difficult to pass up, so many came home with new skis, boots, poles, clothing.

All things come to an end, and we had good weather to travel home. This was a fantastic trip with wonderful people. Thanks to everyone for being such a great group!

Meet Your New President

Hi, my name is Ann Daniel, and after a year as President-elect, I think I am ready to take the helm.

We live near Morse Lake in Noblesville, and I just retired after 30 years at Community Health Network - initially serving as family therapist on the Children's Psychiatric Unit, and then as Director of Relationship Effec-tiveness for the network. My husband Terry has a practice in psychotherapy and spiritual direction in Broad Ripple. My daughter and her family live in Car-mel; and son and family live in Louisville.

My early goals of retirement are to organize my household (which means lots of sorting and pitching), catch up on reading, hiking and biking, spend more time with grandkids, traveling, and researching the In-dianapolis community to see where I can best use my talents as a volunteer. I am already on the boards of a non-profit called Basic Needs, Simple Solutions and my college sorority’s Educational Foundation.

I will serve as president of ski club for the 2016-17 season and totally en-joy getting to know the club and people much better! Let me know if

there’s anything I can help you with. Email: [email protected] Ann
