Did you know? Already in 1908 skiing legend Franz Reisch published the first ski guide “Skiing around Kitzbühel“. This booklet was one of the first of its kind and soon became a milestone in Austria’s skiing history.

Skiing in Kitzbühel.

Since 1892.

Skiing and Kitzbühel – two words that cannot be separated. The “White Sport” at the bottom of the Hahnenkamm has already been popular since 1892. Skiing is Kitzbühel‘s highlight. Admit it, don’t you also dream of conquering the majestic “Streif ” on your own? 54 lifts connect summits of up to 2000 m above sea level. 170 km of downhill runs and 33 km (21 miles) of ski routes can be found on the slope map. Above all, the easily accessible backcountry offers countless possibilities for backcountry skiing and dozens of romantic ski huts and lodges invite you to stop for a bite to eat or a drink.

In 1908 already, ski pioneer Franz Reisch refers to the ski resort’s geographic advantages in his booklet “Skitouren um Kitzbühel” (Skiing around Kitzbühel): Comprising extraordinary amounts of snow, easy accessibility and an unsurpassed number of backcoun-try skiing routes, Kitzbühel, according to today’s skiing develop-ment, becomes a must for all ski fans. Year after year more people are fascinated by Kitzbühel and its surrounding Alps.

Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel (Kitzbühel lift company).

Advanced skiers find everything their hearts desire – magnificent powder runs, mogul skiing, extraordinary carving pleasure and more than 24 km (15 miles) of black slopes. Many small idyllic ski huts invite to a stop on the way. insiders also appreciate the easily accessible backcountry which provides ideal opportunities for freeriding and off-piste adventure.

especially skilled skiers are drawn to Kitzbühel. embedded into a picturesque landscape lies the “Streif ” – definitely the world‘s most spectacular and legendary course for ski racers and a “must ski” for any ambitious skier.

Climate and Snow.

in 1908, frAnz reiScH referred to tHe peculiAritieS of KitzbüHel’S MicrocliMAte in HiS SKiing guide booKlet. WinterS Are long WitH HigH precipitAtion.

Within the last years, great effort has been put into the extension of technical and artificial snow coverage. over 750 snow makers boost piste quality when the skiing season begins. Thus Kitzbühel has always been able to guarantee huge amounts of snow.

Within the winter seasons 2009|10 and 2010|11, Kitzbühel was Austria’s only non-glacier skiing resort which commenced its winter season in october.

The distinct climate ensures long lasting snowfalls and large amounts of fresh snow. Kitzbühel’s climate is more inner alpine and more continental than the one in the french or Swiss Alps. Thus temperatures are much lower than in more western regions.

Modernisation Boom.

The initial startup of the “3-S”, a triple-rope-mountain cablecar, in 2004 was the trigger for an investment boom in the skiing area Kitzbühel. Since then, over 100 million euros have been invested into ski lifts and artificial snow pro-duction systems. Kitzbühel is up to date!

Apart from the Hahnenkamm race weekend the Streif downhill slope is open to the public. cru-cial passages such as the “Mausefalle”-jump, the steep Steilhang passage, the “Hausbergkante”-jump or the final section are marked as “extreme ski routes”. Most of the time they are very icy and therefore only recommended to expert skiers.

Family Streif. The family Streif bypasses all extreme passages of the original downhill course and thus becomes a “red ski run” on Kitzbühel’s ski slope map.

Did you know? The world-renowned downhill slope was named after the Streifalm, located on the upper part of the race course. The Alm in turn, most likely got its name from a farmer in Westendorf named Straiff.

Mini Streif. The Mini Streif for children can be found near the hotel ramushof and ganslernbahn at the bottom of the world-renowned Hahnenkamm slope. in its agility course kids can develop their skiing skills in a playful way. playful learning at its best!

Parallel Streif. Thanks to modifications in summer 2010, the Streif can now also be used throughout the prepa-rations for the race week in january. Absolute piste closures prior to the race are a thing of the past.

entrepreneur Koller invents the so-called “topf-skischule”, where all skiing instructors have a share in the profits. Along with ski pioneer and “father of Wedeling” Stefan Kruckenhauser, Koller revo-lutionizes modern ski teaching methods (short ski method or playful learning for kids). He also pi-oneers boarder-cross and ski-cross with his “teu-felspiste” (devil’s piste) at the interski congress in garmisch in 1971. on top of this he publishes numerous books and videos on skiing and its te-aching methods.

The Kitzbühel Ski School is the world’s biggest and most prestigious one throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Within decades Kitzbühel’s ski instructors sprawl to all ski regions throughout the world and play an influential role in spreading ski sport, most notably within the uSA. for more than 30 years, toni Sailer is head of the children’s ski school “rote teufel” in Kitzbühel. in 1985 his brother rudi Sailer takes over and has since then been ma-nager of the red devils.
