Kris’ Kolumn

El Nino, master of the Pacific, we AGAIN beckon ye to not

pacify the waters, rather make them churn and burn with

storms that bring snows, rains, and more snows to our

beloved mountains (not to the Midwest or East), water to our

streams and mountain lakes, so that we may lavish in the

splendor of the white stuff – especially that we may enjoy it

south of the boarder!

Craig tells me that the past year ended with 74 official members. Up from the past few

years. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!! So, if you have not already renewed, I am

asking for your investment in Your Club, the common thread of so many couples and

friendships over the decades.

If you’d just

like to support

Your Club in

continuing our

purpose for

skiing (and

boarding),

that’s fine,

but… this year,

we will make a

special effort

to canvas the

Membership

Forms for

favorite

activities.

Whether Members like watching or participating in sports, wine tasting (a given for

most?), playing cards, rafting, horseback riding, playing ping-pong, or other activities,

we’re gonna give a few of these the ol’ college try!

Please note that your dues help to circulate this outstanding Pulitzer prize material,

organize ski weekends, well-attended social events and the week long ski trip, as well

as follow-up on all those favorite activities!

We hope that the drought (weather!) ends soon, with wonderful blizzards that strand

us in Mammoth for a week! (did I just tempt fate??)

Meanwhile, please welcome our newest Board Member: Heidi Klimp, a long time

Member who frequents our events from time to time. Regrettably, Catherine Singer,

another long time Member who has served on the Board in various other capacities,

has declined her election to the Board as a Member-at-Large, leaving the spot open for

another enterprising individual who might like to attend our monthly Board meetings.

Please allow me to congratulate Cynthia for also volunteering to be our new L.A.

Council Rep, and Mark Malan for volunteering to be our new alternate L.A. Council

Rep! Two fine ski club supporters who will surely help us to move forward in this

special area.

Lastely, please welcome Brian Maloney to the ranks of the Board as a new Member-at-

Large and Ways-and-Means Chair. You will see him often at the 1st Wednesday General

Meetings (free pizza at Ecco’s) helping me to get rid of a fine bottle of wine, as well as

helping us all have a good time at such events as the Annual Open House.

Your banged-up president continues to mend. Slowly, no thanks to a couple wipe-outs

on Cornice on our last trip to Mammoth. Our lone women’s member of Team Long

Beach continues to mend, hoping to be on the slopes when the snow falls! And, of

course, hoping the snow will fall! Let’s hope that we can all ski this Fall!

Bob Miller and Jan Patten are eager to take a tour on my boat, Cheers!, and we’ll be

taking a few of our LBSC buds along!

Don’t forget to submit your best (and worst!) gossip to Your Ski Breeze editor for

judicious editing and inclusion of this auspicious rag.

Cheers! Kris

ANNUAL AWARDS By Kris Flaig

At the Annual Dinner-Dance, we like to celebrate people who have made this, Our Club,

a little special during the past year with awards that express our thanks for their

efforts. Lance arranged for a wonderful setting with a fabulous setting sun, so what

else could we do, but sip the ski bum’s nectar and have a few laughs during the

presentation of current Ski Club nostalgia? And, yes, we did raffle several great bottles

of wines and liquors.

I had the pleasure of offering a couple of awards for “contributions that should not go

unnoticed,” as well as the Club’s consensus of the most valuable non-Board Member,

while Craig and Cynthia provided a trip to yester-year in how they handled the Team

Long Beach ski awards.

This year’s

Presidential Awards

went to two really

special individuals. A

gentleman who has

made himself dear to

all, offered good

counsel in leading

Your Club, and would

never ask for

anything for himself,

Lance continues to

find more interesting

establishments to

taste the nectar of

the (terraced) slopes.

Ying, so loyal, has continued to assist me in getting connected with the membership as

well as the Dinner-Dance slide show!

The Most Valuable Member Award went to a gentleman who is always there with a

smile (like either he just heard a good joke or got away with something), subtle advice

(comes with the years and the companionship?), and is always a good

roommate/condo mate on the road: Bob Miller.

Although not receiving an award, it is

worthy to mention the contributions

of several (other) Board Members for

their efforts during the ski season.

Your Secretary, Sarah, while

exceptional at keeping notes and being

the first with her article each month, is

also a darned good counsel, usually

with the flavor of a story or two. Your

Treasurer, Ziba, continues to ensure us

that we are in the black – to the penny,

and puts up with all my late receipts

(at least the expenses are all approved

ahead of time!). Shep has

enthusiastically educated Your

President on further nuances of having

a darned good ski time. Roberto

continues to arrange the Club Condo

accommodations and provides a

running column, which includes lists of

Mammoth and local activities each

month of the summer. Craig

continues to break new ground on

going here and there on his racing and membership tasks. And Ken completed his last

year as an official Member of Your Board, always outstanding in his support of my

suggestions to move forward, although sometime tactfully offering a suggestion that

takes us, agreeably, in a slightly different direction.

No Annual salute can be complete without thanking three other sets of people:

Many thanks to those who have given of their hearts by becoming Members for the

first time or Renewing their Memberships for yet another year.

And, many thanks to those who have opened their homes to Membership parties and

other events, including Dave Lopez, Bob Miller, Jan Patten, Brian & Lisa Maloney,

Craig & Ziba Gibson, and others. With Lance’s preliminary list of activities for the

coming fiscal year, this list will only grow and grow….

Lastly, many thanks also go to Catherine Singer, Ying Liu, and others for taking photos

throughout the year.

I look forward to next year’s group of award recipients – whomever they may be!

Many thanks to 2014-2015 Board Members and Chairpersons for their tireless efforts!

June 2015 LBSC Ski Club Week Trip Report By Bob & Tara Shepard

The choice between Aspen Colorado, and Big Sky Montana is still being worked out.

We will be finalizing trip costs for both resorts at Far West Ski Convention in San Diego

June 4-7, 2015 and hope to get better pricing there. As of today, all lodging will be at

the Aspen GANT condos for the Aspen trip. The Aspen trip would be Sunday to Sunday

Jan 31 to Feb. 7, 2016 and hoping to get back to LAX in time for the Super Bowl game!

The lodging in Big Sky will be in both the Huntley Hotel with breakfast each day for an

additional cost of $266.00 pp for the group staying there. The other half of the group

will stay at the Big Horn Condos with no free breakfasts, sorry, you cook your own. The

Big Sky week trip will be Saturday to Saturday Jan.30 to Feb. 6, 2016.

Also on the Airline cost: the first 36 members that sign-up will get the low airfare, and

the next 36 Members will have an increase of $50.00 pp for their flights.

We are trying to keep the resort cost for either resort between $1725.00 - $1850.00.

We hope to have the final trip costs finished in June. Currently, Aspen

Resort is ahead by only 5 votes, so it may all depend on the final trip cost as to

where we go in 2016. If you still have not emailed your Pick for the 2016 Week Ski Trip,

please email your Pick today to Shep at: [email protected]

Pizza time soon, hope to see you all at ECCO’s June 3rd for the LBSC General Meeting!

Sarah Sez … By Sarah Pool

"Taylor Roberts' Awesome Mammoth Ski Locker!"

After many years of lugging ski gear & ski clothing to Mammoth Mountain while growing older and always forgetting something (ugh), Taylor Roberts, former member and great LBSC friend finally decided to bite the bullet and get a Season ski locker. First by sharing a locker and splitting the cost, then realizing that with little storage room at home she could instead be utilizing a locker as storage space, the decision was made to renew the locker for her own.

Locker pockets hang on the inside of the door and store band aids for cuts from sharp ski edges, quarters for the boot warmer in the morning, protective 45 sunblock, moisturizer, aspirin for aches and pains, eyeglass cleaner, ski wraps, two types of goggles, ski sunglasses, neoprene blizzard-proof boot covers (thank you Mike Zullo), little packets of Kleenex, a sealed sandwich bag containing tea bags AND a stainless steel coffee mug that won’t break when it falls out of the locker. Daily she can bring up a lunch bag, but remembers not to store food in the locker overnight because you don’t want to attract mice or insects. The locker section that she’s in is known for neither. At the bottom of the locker is a wooden bench built for her boots to fit under, elevating her skis and poles and leaving a spot for the helmet to sit on. Climbing inside the locker, standing on the bench, she rigged a secure curtain rod to hold a cloth shelving storage unit. By tightly rolling up her clothes, quite a few items fit in each section.

Page 13: SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 volume 76, issue 13 · The choice between Aspen Colorado, and Big Sky Montana is still being worked out. We will be finalizing trip costs for both resorts at

SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 VOLUME 76, ISSUE 13

Since the weather at Mammoth can be VERY changeable, the storage includes all kinds of light, medium and heavy weights of gloves, under-layers, pullovers, pants, jackets, hats and ski socks. It’s all there so that she doesn’t regret leaving it home when the weather changes. It’s just a ski down to the locker to make adjustments as needed! Another locker benefit is meeting and skiing with your locker neighbors. A European gentleman walked by the locker on the last trip and asked if the mountain sold the items she outfitted her locker with, he said that’s what he needed. Taylor had to reply no, everyone has different requirements so people come up with their own customizations. He said he should have known a woman would come up with some way to use every single bit of her locker. Luckily, she only uses one pair of poles and one pair of all mountain skis. No Powder or Race skis. If she were a Masters Racer, adjustments would have to be made for multiple pairs of different types of skis and poles. Some Masters Racers are known for keeping 2 lockers for all their gear and accoutrements. What is a Masters Racer? Well that’s a whole ‘nother subject and requires some real dedication. (Maybe we have a Masters Racer that’d like to write a column on the Masters program.) All she takes home in a collapsible bag at the end of each ski trip is whatever requires laundering. She’s learned from a ski friend to drop it next to the washer/dryer, do the laundering and immediately repack it to go back to the locker ASAP. Summer visits to her ski locker have been known to happen. Season Ski Lockers are rented for a period of 12 months, renewing every June, before June 14th. They are approximately $350. Open lockers are available after June 14th. If you do not want a locker for an entire 12 months and only want a locker for a Week or a Weekend, go to Basket Check and you can rent one for that timespan, avoiding the feeding of tokens while you are there. Check with Basket Check on the Weekly and Weekend rental locker rates if you need a locker for more than one day. Cheers! Sarah

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl

In May, we had our annual dinner dance at Malarkey’s Grill in Long Beach. The

turnout was one of the best in recent years! About 30 LBSC members attended in

Hawaiian attire. The dining room looked over Alamitos Bay and we almost had a

perfect beautiful sunset, except for some low clouds which appeared at dusk.

Ziba was exceptionally busy getting

members checked in …. I think she

was saying, “OMG!! I can’t keep up

with all those tickets!”

Our President, Kris did an outstanding

job as Master of Ceremony. Kris

recognized some of the members for

their service to the club, including Bob

Miller who received the prestigious

MVP award. As for me….I received

recognition as a special contributor

for club activities, funny…I just love

doing it! ;o)

Craig Gibson our vice president of

racing had several racers come up to

receive awards for their racing

accomplishments. He had special

beanies with propellers made for each

racer.

And this year, one of our emeritus racers, Mike Zullo, stepped forward to coach us. He

had a lot of great tips to give us, but lacked the proper tools to administer them.

Page 15: SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 volume 76, issue 13 · The choice between Aspen Colorado, and Big Sky Montana is still being worked out. We will be finalizing trip costs for both resorts at

SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 VOLUME 76, ISSUE 13

We’re hoping he returns next season, and to ensure he would be properly equipped,

we presented him with some special coaching tools. ….Now Mike, don’t take that

whip too seriously!

Page 16: SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 volume 76, issue 13 · The choice between Aspen Colorado, and Big Sky Montana is still being worked out. We will be finalizing trip costs for both resorts at

SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 VOLUME 76, ISSUE 13

Everyone thought the food was delicious. And after the dinner, members danced to

live music at Malarkey’s Grill and if that wasn’t enough ….some of us went next door

to the Boat House for drinks and more dancing!

By far this Dinner Dance was a tremendous success and we are all blessed to be

associated with the LBSC club. This is like another family for all of us.

As for upcoming events, on June 20th we’ll be having a barbecue at the Gibson’s home

in Seal Beach. Watch for the upcoming flyer!

Then on July 11th we have wine tasting at District Wine on Linden Ave in Long Beach.

Also in July, we have a pool party planned at Barbie Spatz’ on July 25th and two grills

will be available for barbecuing if members want to barbecue.

In August, we have a barbecue scheduled at Dave’s Home…Casa de Lopez and wine

tasting at Bistro St. Germaine in Seal Beach.

We should know by then where the club will be going for our week skiing trip next

year. More flyers will be coming out with details of our monthly social activities.

Enjoy and hope to see you at any one or all of these events!

Craig’s Crag … Racing & Membership

By Craig Gibson

Team Long Beach upheld our long tradition of ski racing and finished the season in a

respectable third place behind Aerospace Ski Club and Century City Ski Club but

beating the Four Seasons Ski Club.

At our dinner dance, our racers were recognized not with a “hats off” congratulatory

gesture but a “hats on” token of appreciation- a celebratory beanie with a device on

top to propel the team to new heights next season. As is our custom, special awards

were presented.

Recipients

were Lori

Maynard,

Roberto

Tovar, Dana

Hart, Mike

Zullo, Brian

Maloney,

Craig

Gibson, and

yours truly,

our Prez,

Kris Flaig!

The Most Improved Racer Award went to Steve Brown. Steve not only earned the

most points for our club- a total of 28- he also was moved from level 4 to level 3. The

Rookie of the Year Award went to racing newbie, Brian Maloney. Brian garnered 22

points for our club and was moved from level 7 to level 6.

Page 20: SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 volume 76, issue 13 · The choice between Aspen Colorado, and Big Sky Montana is still being worked out. We will be finalizing trip costs for both resorts at

SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 VOLUME 76, ISSUE 13

Points matter, … but participation matters too! This season we had an

unprecedented number of races- a total of seven; and two of our members made it

to all seven races-Ken Kawahara and Roberto Tovar. For their tenacity and

persistence Ken and Roberto shared the Most Valuable Racer Award.

The Long Beach Ski Club experienced a positive trend last year. We grew from 62 to

74 members. Hopefully this is a trend that will continue. With the aid of our new

Breeze editor, Cynthia Carter, and webmaster, Dana Hart, we should be seeing some

exciting new developments in our website, newsletter, and social media that will

help to attract more new members.

LBSC membership goes from June 1st until May 31st so, if you haven’t renewed your

membership, now is the time to do so. Applications can be found in this publication

as well as on our website. Fill them out, send them in and stay tuned for another

season of great fun and friendship!

KEN’S KOMMENTS By Ken Gregg

It is time for the vast majority of us to be thinking about things other than skiing.

Contrary to some these late season storms that we have been receiving, which are

welcomed & needed, the conditions are extremely marginal for skiing at this time of

year. That is unless you happen to be considering skiing somewhere in the Southern

Hemisphere, in which case I am extremely envious & wish you all the best. For the rest

of us please enjoy yourself & have a wonderful summer.

1. Physical conditioning – as the old catch phrase says “Just Do It!” We all live in

wonderful Southern California, where summer arrives early and stays for a long

time. I realize that most of our club members are not working out to be able to

fit in to that tiny winnie two piece or speedo bathing suit, but rather to do

something healthy for ourselves. With the fair weather and extra daylight upon

us, this is an excellent time of the year to spend some additional time outdoors.

Take that nice evening walk or bike ride, do some gardening, hiking, play some

tennis or perhaps take that walk on the beach. A daily walk, an occasional bike

ride, some yoga or stretching will help more than you know and hopefully lead

into longer & more intense work outs. One item of caution however, when

spending time outdoors please don’t forget to use sunscreen.

2. Equipment – the only thing that I would like to mention about your equipment is

that unless your garage is air conditioned or underground, this is probably not

the best place to store your ski boots. I strongly recommend that you find a

location in your home (a closet or unused room) where the temperature is

regulated to store these valuable tools. You have paid way too much for them to

have them ruined by the high temperatures that can be generated in an

uncontrolled garage or storage shed.

SKI BREEZE JUNE 2015 VOLUME 76, ISSUE 13

3. Participation – It is not uncommon around this time of year to stop thinking

about skiing, but please plan on joining us at our next monthly General

Membership Meeting, which will be held as usual on the 1st Wednesday of the

month. This means that the next one will be held on June 3rd @ Ecco’s Pizza in

Long Beach. The pizza is free and so is the comradery. Drinks and things other

than the pizza are on your own nickel. The LBSC has scheduled a number of

interesting events in June, July & August so please look for the details else ware

in this newsletter and hope to see you there.
