Get Loose with Lance - Social By Lance Liebl [email protected]

January wine tasting was a tremendous success at Bistro Saint Germaine. Over 25 attended which required an additional table. The main one, which sat 21, was filled by 6pm. As usual the service was excellent. The appetizers and wine selection were outstanding. This venue is the club’s favorite place for wine tasting. The pictures of this event show many happy faces. There will be no scheduled club social event for February, as the club is on three different trips. The Mammoth Ski trip should be great since the snowfall has been decent so far. You’re on your own for Valentine’s day.

RACERS EDGE – Brian Maloney [email protected]

Ski Enthusiasts,

The first race of the season went off really well. Eight registered starters of Long Beach Ski Club took second place with 83 points. Aerospace took first place with 111 points and fourteen registered. They took it with the electoral vote. Our club performed strong.

In 9 Vet M Craig Gibson won two first places giving the club 10 points.

In 8 Vet M Roberto Tovar came in first place in ULLR 1 giving the club 5 points.

In 5 Vet M Brian Maloney won two first places giving the club 14 points and 2 strikes which throws me into 4 Vet M.

In 4 Vet M Eric Hartman came in first place in ULLR 1 giving the club 6 points. Eric crashed on his second and third run due to premature release of bindings. The ribs are bruised but not broken. Pray for speedy recovery.

In 4 Vet M Ken Kawahara won two second places giving the club 10 points.

In 3 Vet M Steve Brown pounded consistently fast finish times. He won two third places giving the club 8 points. His best time was 38.92 which was 3.32 seconds faster than Eric Hartman - which is lightning fast.

Although not a club member, Gary Seaton raced for our club in 3 Vet M, winning two first places giving the club 18 points.

His wife, Teri Seaton, won two first places in 5 Vet F giving the club 12 points.

The next races are scheduled for February 10th. Be ready for March 10th race which should be a day of Slalom Race. Chin guards may be required. Hand and shin guards are precautionary. Aerospace beat us only because they had more participating. We need more to participate. A challenge to all our women. April 7th race will follow.

Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report By Roberto Tovar [email protected]

The drive up to Mammoth, in January, was pleasant. We could see the storm coming over the Sierra crest. It began to snow after midnight and we arose to 4 inches of freshies! It snowed gently until the afternoon. Some of us had a little problem with the cut up snow, on many runs. Saturday was a typical Mammoth blue-bird day. A number of us spent the day racing on Andie's, four runs of GS. Sunday was another sunny day with many runs groomed to perfection! Joining me on this trip were Ron Scholz, Letty Gonzales, Jodi Hein and new member, Rose Molina. The next Mammoth trip is scheduled for February 15 through 18. Hope to see you there.

February 15 - 18, 2018 March 8 - 11, 2018 April 5 - 8, 2018

Enjoy! Roberto [email protected]

Week Trips with Mark Malan

Mark & Marietta Malan at the LBSC Wine Tasting

We are sold out on the Steamboat trip. There will be 14 LBSC members on

this trip. I was unable to secure more rooms as the air fare jumped in price (that

is why we reserve months in advance). To those with late requests, sorry.

The Steamboat departure is on Sat (2/3/18) at about 11am. Arrive early as

ski luggage check-in is always a hassle.

With 163 of 165 runs open their 48" base insures a good time will be had by

all. Forecasts call for 2" tomorrow and 3" the next day. This constant

accumulation is what Colorado winters are famous for.

Keep your tips up, Mark

PyeongChang – 2018 Winter Olympics

By Dennis Potts

In February, we are once again ready to follow the Winter Olympics. Starting with Ski Jumping and Curling (the only Olympic Sport where you can drink beer while competing, eh) on February 8th with Opening Ceremonies on February 9th. Curling starts at 9:05 am Feb 8th Korea Time (4:05 pm PST Feb 7th) – first match is USA versus OAR. First lesson, South Korea is 9 hours ahead of GMT and we are 8 hours behind (total 17 hours.) Second lesson, “What is OAR?” Due to the Russian doping controversy, the International Olympic Committee will only permit certain Russian athletes to compete, under the designation Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) – they will be wearing “Neutral” gray or red uniforms and hold the Olympic flag.

The Games will be broadcast on NBC, NBCSN and across the networks of NBC Universal. But this is 2018 so you have more options. You can watch the Olympics online, on mobile devices and connected TVs

Every Olympic event will be available to stream live and on-demand on NBCOlympics.com, along with a wide spectrum of highlights and video features.

Watch on your mobile device, tablet or connected TV by downloading the NBC Sports app, where you'll find every Olympic event available to stream live or on-demand, along with the same immersive library of highlights and video features.

Here is the schedule https://www.nbcolympics.com/full-schedule

Our Team USA skiers/boarders are best seen in this link with Bios of each athlete. https://www.teamusa.org/pyeongchang-2018-olympic-winter-games/team-usa/athletes Of the fifteen Alpine skiers, none are from SoCal but in Snowboarding we have Kelly Clark from Mammoth, Chloe Kim from Torrance, Hailey Langland from San Clemente, Maddie Mastro of Wrightwood and Shaun White from Carlsbad or wherever his private training mountain is…

Warren Miller, Legendary Outdoor

Filmmaker, Dies at 93

(from the Hollywood Reporter 1/26/18)

Warren Miller, the legendary outdoor filmmaker who for decades made homages to downhill skiing that he narrated with his own humorous style, has died. He was 93, in his home on Orcas Island in Washington state.

A World War II veteran, ski racer, surfer and sailor, Miller produced more than 500 action films about a variety of outdoor activities including surfing and sailing. But he was best known for his thrill-seeking films featuring daredevil skiers barreling down breathtakingly steep slopes.

His annual ski movies served as informal kickoffs to ski season and became a rite of passage for the legions of ski bums and snowboarders who flocked to see them at movie theaters and played them on video while relaxing with drinks after tough ski days.

"Warren's legacy of adventure, freedom and humor carries on in the countless lives he touched," his wife of 30 years, Laurie Miller, said in a statement Thursday. "Warren loved nothing more than sharing his life's adventures and hearing literally every day from friends old and new about how his stories inspired others to enrich and enjoy their own lives."

Miller was born in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles in 1924. He grew up during the Depression and said his family struggled to put food on the table.

According to a biography on his website, Miller bought his first camera for 39 cents when he was 12 years old. He used earnings from his newspaper route to buy his first skis and bamboo

ski poles when he was 15 and took his first run at Mount Waterman near Los Angeles with his Boy Scout troop.

"I really believe in my heart that that first turn you make on a pair of skis is your first taste of total freedom, the first time in your life that you could go anywhere that your adrenaline would let you go," he told The Seattle Times in a 2010 interview.

Miller played varsity basketball at the University of Southern California and served in the Navy.

In 1946, he bought a camera for $77 and set off with his friend Ward Baker in a 1936 Buick Phaeton towing a teardrop trailer to ski destinations across the U.S., including Yosemite, Jackson Hole and Mammoth Mountain. They camped in parking lots of ski resorts, perfecting the ski bum life.

He once recalled loving the smell of rabbit frying in the silent evening while parked in Sun Valley's parking lot.

Miller launched his film career in 1950 with his first skiing film, Deep and Light.

He headed Warren Miller Entertainment until the late 1980s when he sold it to his son, Kurt Miller. Time Inc. bought it in 2000 and later sold it. Warren Miller Entertainment It is now owned by Active Interest Media.

Miller was inducted into the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame in 1978.

Aside from his wife, Miller is survived by sons Scott and Kurt, daughter Chris, a stepson, Colin Kaufmann, and five grandchildren.
