Log in to SKALA HubSKALA Hub is the physical medium of SKALA and can connect to various devices to collect information. The Hub will also act as the interface for technicians using SKALA during their daily activities.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 9

A user will log in to the Hub by selecting their name from the list and using a numerical PIN. This PIN is seperate from the password used with SKALA Control. In some cases, you may have RFID enabled with your Hub, which will allow logging in via swiping a card, badge, or fob.

Users should always log in as themselves and log out when stepping away from the Hub. This is part of best practices since data collected will be tied to the user who started the reading.

Log in to SKALA MobileSKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA. As an iOS app, it can only be used with Apple devices, such as an iPhone or iPad. SKALA Mobile functions very similarly to the the SKALA Hub, allowing you to take manual readings and fill out checklists.

To download SKALA Mobile, open the App Store and search for METER Group Inc., USA. The app is called “SKALA Mobile by METER”. Select the app, and click download. It is available at no cost.

Open the app once it has finished downloading. It will prompt you to enter an Application ID. This ID will tie the app to your SKALA System. To receive one, please contact [email protected]. You will be given an application ID, and once entered, you will be ready to start using SKALA Mobile.

Log in to SKALA Mobile by selecting your name from the list and using the same PIN as on the Hub.

Product Setup

● The Products page stores the tests to be performed on each product and the specification for each test.

● Products have two steps: Product Groups and Products. Each product belongs to a Product Group, which contains the tests and specs. If a set of products all have the same test process and specifications, they can all be populated in the same Product Group.

● To start, add a new Product Group by clicking the Add Product Group button in the upper right hand side of the page. A window will open where you may enter a name.

● Sometimes when a sample is taken, other information needs to be collected, for example bin, line check time, or shift. Use the Sample Field boxes for this as shown.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 14

To begin using the SKALA system, at least one product must be entered to start testing. To start this process navigate to the Products page under the Setup tab on the side-nav. For this step, products are going to be covered briefly. For more detailed information, please find the product information in the “Using SKALA Control” section below.

Page 15: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Product Setup - Required Tests● At least one Required Test will

have to be added. You can do this by clicking the Add Required Test button NOT the down arrow button next to it. That option is for some advanced features.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 15

● After adding a required test, information for it will appear. You will see a dropdown for the type of test. One example is Water Activity. Select the correct test, and then enter a Stage ID. This is a unique identifier for the test and can be anything. If you have two Water Activity tests, for example, each will have a different Stage ID. Finally, add the specifications for the test. Operating Limits are generally for quality while Fail Limits might pose a safety concern. Operating Limits must be within Fail limits.

Product Setup - Products● After setting up your first Required Test, you may continue to add additional tests until

you have covered everything you will be testing in SKALA. ● Once you are satisfied with the Product Group, click Save at the bottom of the page.

You will return to the main Product page where your new Product Group now appears. ● Underneath the Product Group, there will currently be 0 products and you will see a

blank text box to enter a product name. Do this, and then click Add.● A screen will appear where you can fill in various pieces of information about your

product. However, none of it is required. It is possible to just scroll to the bottom and click Save. You will return to the main Product page and see your new Product listed.

● Only one product is needed to start testing, but this process can be repeated until all of your products are in the system.

● If specifications or tests change, administrators and managers can come back to this page and edit any Product or Product Group.

Hardware and Power - Powering onThe SKALA Hub itself is made to be durable and can be setup in many Production or QA areas. The Hub should be set on a sturdy and stable surface. The Hub is a touch screen instrument, but a keyboard and mouse can be used with it if desired.

The Hub requires a power supply. To turn the unit on, simply plug the power cord into the wall and the other end into the back of the Hub. The power port on the Hub is under a lip on the back, directly behind the tower. There is no “On” button.

The Hub is designed to be left on. There is no need to power down or unplug the Hub. If the need arises to move or power down the Hub, there is a safe shutdown option in the settings page under System Settings. When possible, users should use this option to turn off the Hub before unplugging the unit.

In case of a system freeze or inoperable screen, it is okay to simply unplug the power cord from the back of the Hub to power it down. Plugging the system back in will restart the device.

Page 21: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Hardware and Power - Ethernet The SKALA Hub comes with several other cable pieces in addition to the power cord.

The Ethernet cable is used for creating a stable, wired connection to the network. The orientation of the Ethernet port on the Hub can make it difficult to disconnect when needed. The port extender that is included can be plugged into the Hub instead of the cable directly to make disconnection much easier.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 21

Page 22: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Hardware and Power - Device Cables The SKALA Hub can collect data from many different sources. In most cases, these sources of data will need to be connected directly to the Hub. The Hub has 7 USB ports on the back where devices and instruments can be connected.

The most common types of devices that will be connected to a Hub are lab instruments, such as pH and water activity meters. Almost all of these devices will be connected to the SKALA Hub via a Serial(RS-232) to USB cable. One of these cables comes included with the Hub. Please ask SKALA Support if any unconnected device is currently profiled and able to be connected.

There are various other devices that may be connected to your SKALA System. What is to be connected will have been worked out with METER, and any required cables will be provided.

Page 23: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Hardware and Power - Stickers Your SKALA Hub will come with a set of numbered stickers. These are for use with connected devices.

When a new device is connected to SKALA, the system will assign it a number that will be called on when using the device. For example, you may have two water activity meters connected to your SKALA Hub. When you go to take a reading the SKALA Hub will tell you to put your sample into one of those two instruments. When calling out an instrument, the SKALA Hub will always use the number value assigned to that instrument.

This set of stickers is included for your use in numbering your instruments and easily identifying them. However, you may keep track of these numbers in whatever way works best for you.

Network Connections - EthernetThe SKALA Hub needs to be connected to the internet for most of its use. The most stable and recommended way to connect is through an ethernet cable. This is not always possible, as an active port may not be available in the Hub location.

To connect your SKALA Hub to the network in this way simply plug the included ethernet cable into that back of the Hub, using the port extender for ease of disconnection, and also into the port in the wall.

It should not take long for the Hub to recognize the network and display your user list.

To check connection status, please refer to the Network Connections - Status page below.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 24

Page 25: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Network Connections - WiFiThe SKALA Hub can be connected to your network over WiFi. In many cases, a wireless connection is less stable than a hardwired connection, so it is recommended to use an ethernet port when possible.

To connect to WiFi, you will need to navigateto the WiFi page on your Hub. You will noticea wrench icon in the upper right-hand corner. That will open the settings page. Then selectWiFi, and pick the network you would like toconnect to.

Once the Hub has established a connection to your network, your user list will populate on the main screen. If the Hub initially fails to connect, trying once or twice more will usually solve the issue.

To check connection status, please refer to the status page below.

Page 26: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Network Connections - StatusThe easiest way to check the connection status of your SKALA Hub is to go into the Network Settings page. To get here, click on the wrench icon on the Hub, and then select Network Settings from the options.

● On this page always make sure the box in the center contains the text, “SKACLOUD”. If it does not, please contact SKALA Support.

● Site should be your site name.● IP will list this Hub’s IP address.● Status will show if the Hub is connected to the internet.

If you see that your Hub is disconnected please try reconnecting. If you cannot re-establish connection, or see “SKALA Server Error”, please contact SKALA Support.

Hub LoginTo use the SKALA Hub, each user will need to log in. Select your name from the user list on the Hub to log in as yourself. SKALA will then ask for your unique PIN to log in. If a user does not remember their PIN, the system administrator or SKALA Support can help.

You may also have an RFID login option. In this case, scan your personal RFID card or fob on the scanner pictured below, and SKALA will log you in.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 27

If you do not see a list of users loaded on your SKALA Hub, please check your network connection.

Page 28: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Device Connections - ProfilingConnecting a new device or instrument to SKALA is not as easy as plugging it in the first time. A brand new device will need to be profiled before it can work with SKALA. Essentially, SKALA needs to learn how to talk to each device.

If you have a device you would like to connect, please contact SKALA Support to see if it is a device we have previously profiled. If we have, we can help you connect it to your Hub. If it has not been profiled before, SKALA Support will help start the process of adding a new device. Profiling can take some time as someone from the SKALA team will need to access the particular type of device in person and then program it into SKALA.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 28

Page 29: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Device Connections - New DeviceIf you know that SKALA can connect to a device that you have, but have not previously done so you will need to add the device to SKALA before using it. If you have a SKALA-native device, such as an AQ1, it will auto-connect and all you have to do is plug it in. With non-native devices, follow the steps below.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 29

● Log in on the Hub● Plug the device in question into the Hub● Wait for a screen to appear.● Select “Connect New Device”.● Select the correct device model from the list. ● It will then prompt for the serial number of the device.

Enter it CORRECTLY. ● Your device should now be connected.

Page 30: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Device Connections - ReconnectingA SKALA Hub cannot keep track of connected instruments while off. When restarting a Hub, devices will need to be reconnected. When a user logs in, any native devices will automatically reconnect. Other devices will need to be connected again following the steps below.

10/1/18 SKALA System User Guide 30

● Log in on the Hub.● Unplug the device, and replug it into the Hub.● Wait for a screen to appear.● Select “Reconnect as Known Device”.● Select the correct device from the list.● The serial number may need to be entered again

depending on the device.● Your device should now be connected.

Page 31: SKALA USER MODULE€¦ · SKALA First Steps SKALA Hub Using SKALA Hub Page 4 Page 5 Page 7 Page 18 ... SKALA Mobile is an iOS app that can be used as a secondary interface with SKALA

Device Connections - SKALA PortConnecting devices to your SKALA Hub every time the Hub turns on is not always an ideal situation. It can be remedied by the use of an accessory for the SKALA System called the SKALA Port.

This small device will connect in between an instrument and the Hub. The first time you connect it, you will have to reconnect an instrument as normal. However after this first time, the SKALA Port will remember the device and send that information to the SKALA Hub, allowing any instrument to act as a SKALA-native device. This means that with the use of a SKALA Port, your instrument will automatically connect every time.

It is important to keep each SKALA Port with its corresponding device, as each one is set to a particular device and cannot be easily changed.

Device Connections - StatusYou can check at any time to see which devices are connected to a particular Hub. To do so, click on the wrench icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Hub, and then select Devices from the options.

The Devices screen pictured to the right will show a list of every device that has been added to your SKALA System.

Devices connected on the Hub you are looking at will show up in green, while unconnected devices or devices connected to a different Hub will show up in red.

If a device plugged into your Hub is showing up as unconnected, please unplug it and try to reconnect it.

Samples - On the ScreenUnderneath each Batch is a set of samples. Each sample refers to the tests performed on each new sample of product from the line.

Samples contain a set of required tests that are specific to the Product being run.

Samples can have various pieces of data associated with them such as the bin or wagon the sample was pulled from. This is also specific to the Product begin run.

The “X” on the right side of the Sample allows you to remove the Sample from the Hub. This WILL NOT delete any data. It only deactivates the sample and hides it from view. If a sample is cleared, ONLY readings associated with that sample will be hidden.

Samples - New SampleWhen ready to begin testing a new sample of product, users should click Add Sample under the Batch being tested.

You will then see a screen like the one pictured here. ● The Product and Batch boxes will display the batch

information this sample will be added to.● The Starting Stage dropdown will allow users to select a

specific stage of the product to start on. It will default to the first stage, so unless directed otherwise, leave this field as is.

● There may be additional text boxes here to fill out depending on the Product. These may ask the user for pieces of information like Bin or Shift.

Clicking Add Sample will then add this sample to the batch.

Readings - On the ScreenUnderneath each Sample is a set of Required Tests. Each test will be used to gather readings for the batch.

Required Tests are labeled by Reading Type (e.g., Water Activity) and Stage ID (e.g., Aw). Stage IDs will be determined by your system administrator and may determine specifics of a test (e.g., Pre-cook or Post-Cook).

To begin a Required Test and take a reading, a user will click on the desired test.

If there is an appropriate device for the test connected, you may begin a test with that device. If there is not, the test will have to be completed with a manual reading.

Completed tests will show the reading value as seen here.

Readings - Results When a reading is taken for a required test on SKALA, that reading is automatically checked versus the specifications for that Product.

SKALA is keeping track of what the upper and lower limits are for each of the required tests in a batch. When a reading is taken, it is always associated with the Product and Batch it is under. This means that technicians are free to take tests, and SKALA will let them know whether or not the reading has passed.

The screen pictured here is an example of what the Hub might display after a reading is taken. The green text indicated a passed reading, while red would indicate a failure.

Readings - From DevicesDevices such as water activity meters can be connected to the SKALA Hub. When a reading is taken using a connected device, it is automatically recorded without need for a technician to record it.

To take a reading from a device, make sure the device is connected to SKALA, and then click on a required test of the appropriate type. SKALA will then prompt the user to use a device that is available. The devices are called out by the number assigned to it by SKALA. Make sure to keep connected devices labeled properly. If there is more than one of the same device type, SKALA will choose one.

If a different device than the one chosen is desired, the user can choose a different device. To do so click on the numbered picture in the middle of the screen.SKALA will confirm that you wish to change devices and list thecurrent available devices of the same type. A different instrumentcan be chosen here.

Readings - From DevicesOnce the device has been chosen, click on the start reading button at the bottom of the reading screen.

SKALA will then return to the main screen, and the in-process reading will show up on the bottom of the screen in a small box with loading bars. At this point the user should now start a reading on the connected device.

In some cases the device will take some time to read. These devices can be left alone, and when they finish, SKALA will automatically record the result and bring up a notification screen. Many of these readings can be queued up at once. SKALA will keep track of multiple readings at the same time.

In other cases, a device will read almost instantly and usually has a print button on the device. Once the user hits the print button, SKALA will record the results and check them against your specifications.

Readings - Manual ReadingsSome required tests have no device, such as a taste test. Other tests have devices that cannot be connected to SKALA. In these cases, the results can still be recorded into SKALA manually.

To take a manual reading, a user will click on a Required Test. If SKALA does not detect a compatible connected device, or if the test is inherently manual, a manual entry screen will appear.

The user will need to enter the value and then click Save.

Two such examples are pictured here.

Readings - No-name ReadingsWhen SKALA receives a reading from a device that it is not expecting, it will save the reading as a “No Name Reading”. This means that the reading is not associated with any Batch or Product.

No-name Readings will show up at the bottom of the Hub screen and be logged to SKALA Control.

If a device is going to be used without SKALA, it may be a good idea to unplug it from SKALA first, as many devices will send their readings upon completion. This leads to many excess No-name Readings that clutter real data.

Readings - Assign No-names No-name Readings can be assigned to the correct Batch and product later, if it was not captured by accident. This can be done both on the Hub and on SKALA Control.

To do so on the Hub, locate the reading in question at the bottom of the screen. Click on that reading, and the page shown to the right will appear on the screen.

Follow the steps on the page entering in the information asked for, and then click assign reading at the bottom. The No-name Reading will be assigned to the correct spot.

VerificationsCertain devices that can connect to SKALA require verifications. Usually these occur daily, but can be more or less frequent. Verifications always require a standard such as weights for a scale or salt standards for water activity. SKALA can log these results as well.

The specific standards for each instrument will be assigned in SKALA Control. In these control settings, a time period will also be set. If the instrument has not been verified within that time period, the system will prompt the user to take a verification. A verification can also be started on demand from the Devices page.

When a verification starts, the Hub will walk you through the steps, including making sure the device is clean and clear of debris, selecting the correct standard, and capturing that data. If your device is a SKALA-native device, it will also set the offset for you. If the wrong standard is used or if the verification fails, the device will have to be rechecked and the process restarted.

The results of verifications are saved in SKALA Control under the specific instrument.

LocationsLocations can be set up in SKALA Control in conjunction with certain devices to keep track of continuous data at that location. Such data may include the temperature and humidity of a room or the weight from a checkweigher on a packaging line.

Once this data is being collected, it can be viewed on SKALA Control, but sometimes it will also need to be associated with a particular batch. For example, the checkweigher data for the packaging of a particular batch should be attached to the batch number.

In order to capture location readings under a batch, that batch needs to be assigned to a location for the amount of time it remains in the area. To assign and unassign lots from the Hub, go into the Settings page and click on Locations.

Once in Locations, select the location you want to view, and it will open up, showing you any Batches currently assigned to the location as well as a filter list to enter and select the batch number of a new batch to assign to the area. All location readings within the time period will be logged to the batch.

Standalone ModeThe SKALA Hub can be used offline as well. This is especially useful for native devices that use the Hub as their interface such as the AQ1 and AQ2. It is entirely possible to use the Hub solely as an interface for these devices without any network connection.

To access this mode, click on Standalone Mode which will appear at the bottom of the user list. This will also be the only option to show when there is no network connection. If there is no connection, there will not be an option to log out of this mode.

When in Standalone Mode, devices that you connect to the Hub will show up on the screen. You may immediately take a reading with any of those devices.

The reading will not be saved to any specific batch or product. It will only display on the screen and will show up as in spec. However, it will be logged as a No-name Reading when network connection is re-established. These readings can then be assigned to the correct batch later.

Hub Functions - UpdatesNew software releases are a frequent part of the SKALA System. These updates provide new features and improvements on existing infrastructure. These update usually occur every 6 weeks.

When a new update is available, the Hub will prompt users on login to update. It is possible to click No, but the longer the Hub goes without being updated, the risk grows higher for instability.

When clicking Yes, the Hub will download updates and then restart. The entire process usually takes about 5 minutes. Make sure to get to a good stopping point before updating, as it will cancel any readings in progress.

If a user ever wants to check for new updates, they can go into the settings page and select Version Serial Number. On this page there will be an option to check for updates.

Hub Functions - Keyboard and MouseIn some cases it is easier to use the SKALA Hub with a keyboard and/or mouse instead of the standard touch screen. This is supported and simple to set up.

For keyboards, it will have to be a USB keyboard. It can be plugged into the back of the Hub and will immediately work for text entry.

Before a mouse can be used, the mouse cursor needs to be enabled. To do so, open the Settings menu and go to System Settings. On this page, click on Enable Mouse Cursor. This will require the system to restart. Once it boots back up, you will see a mouse cursor on the screen. A mouse can now be plugged into the back of the Hub and used.

Hub Functions - Remote SupportThe SKALA Hub can occasionally run into problems. When this happens and you contact SKALA Support, they will often need to get the error logs out of the Hub.

This is possible through the Remote Access Support built into every Hub. It is, however, an option that is toggled on and off.

To turn this option on, open the Settings page and go to Network Settings. At the bottom of this page there is a button that will say “Enable/Disable Remote Access Support”. If the Enable option is present, it is currently off. If the Disable option is present, it is currently on.

If SKALA Support ever needs to help you, this tool will help solve any potential issues greatly. It can be turned on anytime, and when necessary, SKALA Support may ask you to enable it if it is not already.
