Jhoon Rhee

Grand Master Jhoon Rhee is a South Korean TaeKwonDo Master known as the Father of American TaeKwonDo. He is most known for introducing TaeKwonDo in America in the 1950’s. One of his Black Belts is Pat Burleson who trained April

Cunningham who promoted Bear Loebe to his Black Belt. This makes our students 5th generation American TaeKwonDo.

OUR MARTIAL ARTS STYLE

Our Style is American Tae Kwon Do with an influence of Karate and Kickboxing. We specialize in Sport Karate and Tournament training.

SPORT KARATE AMERICA HISTORY Bear Loebe's passion for martial arts began when he was 5-years old. He achieved his 1st Degree Black Belt under April Cunningham in August of 1991, just before his 9th birthday, and continued training for higher degrees under Wayne Nguyen. As the 3rd descent directly under Pat Burleson, Bear proudly achieved his 4th degree (AKBBA) in 2005 from Mr. Burleson himself. In 2007 he purchased TKO Martial Arts from his instructor and began his career as a school owner. The school grew so fast in three years that Bear had to find a way to expand. Bear built out a 4500 Sq. Foot State of the art facility next door to the old school with everything needed to produce sport karate champions, including an Olympic style tumbling floor. He renamed the school “Sport Karate America” In 2010. After the opening of Bear’s SKA, he was ranked by the Universal Martial Arts Hall Of Fame under Grand Master Daryl “Big Foot” Stewart to Master rank 5th Degree.

Bear Loebe was a Chuck Norris Kick-Start instructor from 2005 to 2013. He taught at-risk youth at a Houston’s Landrum middle school. Bear Loebe has loved competing since he was 8 years old in the Texas local circuits but always strived to step up his game and compete against the best in the world. Soon after his first few years in karate, he began to compete in tournaments. His travels with the National Black Belt League (NBL) circuit took him to Canada, Mexico, Guatemala and South America, and his prowess attracted sponsors. Bear over the last decade has won 8 National Black Belt League titles in 6 different division including Weapons, Creative Forms, Traditional Forms, and Continuous Sparring. It is important to Bear to be well rounded and attempt to excel at as many different aspects of martial arts as possible. The culmination of his competition career was at Super Grands 2012 in New York where he captured the Overall Traditional Grand Championship beating out the top Traditional World Champions from all other Traditional Divisions. He continues to venture into new division but focuses his energy on his students and raising the level of professionalism in Sport Karate. In October of 2010 Bear hosted his first tournament. He was determined to raise the bar of state karate tournaments and made his event one of a kind. With over 200 competitors this tournament was a huge success.

In February of 2011 the head of the NBL Boice Lydell appointed Bear as the Director of the Sport Karate International Texas, which puts Bear in charge of sanctioning and memberships in Texas. Bear is also in charge of hosting the SKIL State Championship at the end of the year. In 2012 Bear received Promoter of the Year from the NBL for his work with organizing and growing the NBL and SKIL in Texas. Bear Loebe strives to raise the bar of Martial Arts in Texas and works hard to make a difference in his student’s lives and to spread Sport Karate in a positive way. He has over 50 Black Belts promoted under his tutelage and continues to attract Black Belts from around Texas who become part of Sport Karate America. One of Mr. Loebe’s greatest achievements, is having his students become amazing Black Belt Role Models and Instructors like Andy Brett.

Sport Karate America’s Competition Team has been ranked in the top 25 Sport Karate World Rankings since 2005 and strives to compete at the highest level.

RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

Address Black Belts, Instructors, and other adults as Mr., Mrs., Sir, and Ma’am.

Bow when entering and leaving the training floor.

Remove shoes and socks and place them in the lobby shelves.

Only students participating in the class are allowed on the work out area. An adult must accompany students that arrive early until their class has begun.

Parents must also be present at the time the student’s class is finished.

No food or drink is allowed in lobby. Tables are set outside for eating and socializing.

Remove jewelry, including rings and watches before class.

Fingernails and toenails should be trimmed. Please use proper hygiene out of respect for your training partners.

When late for class, ask for permission from the instructor before joining the

class by raising your hand and waiting patiently on the side of the training floor.

If a student is more than 20 minutes late he/she will not be allowed in class.

This will disturb the class instruction. Please do not ask.

Smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages or use of profanity is prohibited in and around the studio.

On sparring day, all required sparring equipment must be on before

class begins.

Friends, family members, and spectators are NOT allowed on the training floor during class. Our trained staff can handle all situations and parents on

the floor can compromise opportunities for students learning.

Spectators should stay quite during class time and step outside to take phone calls or if a young child becomes distracting to the class.

SPECIAL CLASSES

SPARRING - FIGHT CLUB Classes focus solely on the art of sparring. Due to the risk of injury, we require all students to wear the proper safety equipment regardless of their ranks. Beginning at the Orange Belt level, required safety equipment is mandatory. All required sparring equipment must be on before Sparring class begins. This includes shin guards, mouthpiece, and groin protectors for males. Only SKA and Hyper T-shirts or uniform tops are allowed in sparring. As a service to parents and students, we regularly stock and sell this equipment at the school to ensure that students get the proper fit before purchasing sparring gear. Sparring classes begin with students suited up in the proper safety gear before entering the workout area. Warm-up exercises are conducted with sparring gear in place. Sparring rounds are required for all of these belt levels. Before testing for the next belt, students must have executed the required number of sparring rounds, which are listed below: Gold to Orange (optional) 2 rounds Orange to Green 4 rounds Green to Blue 6 rounds Blue to Purple 8 rounds Purple to 3rd Degree Brown 10 rounds 3rd Brown to 2nd Brown 12 rounds 2nd Brown to Red 14 rounds Red to Black 15 rounds

PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are offered for SKA students who are preparing for belt tests, to get ahead or catch up on class instruction, and for those competing in karate tournaments. The instructor of your choice teaches the classes. Please make arrangements directly with that instructor.

HYPER PRO TRAINING SKA offers this class to students who want to take their martial arts to the next level. We teach Tricks, Flips, and Creative weapons in this class. Students must have a weapons form to test for Black Belt and this is a great way to learn it. For a small monthly tuition this program can be added to your membership.

Competition Team This class is exclusively for students that travel to tournaments and compete regularly. The class is to allow team members to practice their competition forms and for the instructors to enhance the students skill. New forms and weapons will not be taught in this class. Anyone can be a member of TEAM SKA with a commitment to competing regularly. Tournament registration must be turned in to attend practice. These classes are scheduled before upcoming tournaments.

Parents Night Out / Social Events We have many fun events for the whole family. Check the TVs in the lobby for upcoming events. We always need volunteers, so don’t hesitate to ask. Fight Club Fitness Kickboxing

This class is for Teens and Adults. Learn real Kickboxing techniques in a high energy no contact workout. No belts or uniforms required. Classes are in a 3-month boot camp format. Special discounts for parents available. Try a class for Free.

UNIFORM AND BELT All uniforms should be clean and in good condition. Any student without full uniform will not be allowed in class. A student without a belt must

stand at last position in line. Belts should be removed before leaving the dojo and should not be worn outside of the dojo unless given special permission by an instructor. Fight Club or SKA T-shirt may be worn

during Sparring and Hyper class.

General Terms

Student of Martial Arts Must Develop These Qualities

RESPECT AND COURTESY The utmost respect must be given to one’s country, flag, parents and Karate instructor. Courtesy and respect

should be extended to all fellow humans and particularly to those of advanced age. MODESTY

Karate students are expected to be humble about their accomplishments. Bullies and braggarts have no place in Karate. One should have a quiet feeling of pride in his achievements, but need not feel compelled to boast

of his accomplishment. SELF-CONTROL

One should never lose his or her temper. One’s skills are seriously diminished if control over emotions is lost. Furthermore, one should never use Karate except in self-defense.

PERSEVERANCE It is normal to become discouraged occasionally, particularly when pursuing an activity sufficiently

challenging to be worthwhile. However, one should persevere until mastery is accomplished. Never give up!

INDOMITABLE SPIRIT (FUDOSHIN) This is an expression of all the other points in the Karate doctrine. A person knowledgeable in Karate should use his skill and education to fight injustice. One should strive to overcome personal weakness in all areas of life and always be a credit to himself and his art.

TaeKwonDo

"Tae" means, "foot" or "to strike with the feet". "Kwon" means, "hand", or "to strike with the hand". "Do" means discipline, art, or way. Hence TaeKwonDo (foot-hand-way) means literally "the art of the feet and the hands" or "the art of kicking and punching".

Karate Japanese, from kara ‘empty’ + te ‘hand.’ The art originated on the island of Okinawa and in its early form was heavily influenced by ancient Chinese martial arts, collectively known as kung fu.

Bowing (Kyungye) All classes begin with bowing to the instructor and to the flags. Bowing to a flag is not worship; instead, it shows respect to your country and to the motherland of Martial Arts. Bowing is also an Asian tradition of greeting one another. Eyes down to higher rank, and eyes up to an opponent or peer.

KIAH (Kiap) Intensive breathing helps build your internal power, brings up your energy level, and scares off your opponents.

Forms (Hyung)

Forms are essentially a routine with a theme. It consists of stances, blocks, punches, strikes and kicks arranged in a meaningful order in response to attacks from multiple imaginary assailants attacking from several directions. The form was formerly the only means masters had to transfer the essence of Martial Arts and their interpretation of the art to their students. Through seemingly endless repetition the student learns the true meaning of each form. Balance, focus, coordination, proper breathing control and self-discipline emerge as benefits of continued practice. At SKA we follow the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) Forms as taught by Jhoon Rhee. Each form’s meaning and translation along with number of movements can be found on the step-by-step forms sheet.

Self-Defense Self-defense is literally defense of oneself. A student learns how to free his/her self from grabs and holds by working against the attacker’s power and vulnerable points. The action must be reflexive so that the defender out-senses the attacker and uses the element of surprise.

Sport Martial Arts

The evolution of martial arts into the modern day sports arena. Competing is not mandatory but is a great way to test and improve your skill.

ATTENDANCE

Testing for a belt rank higher than White requires Black Belt approval. The board’s Chief Examiner, Master Bear Loebe, or his designated examiner of Black Belt level will do testing.

Attendance is taken every day and attending required classes is required for each belt to advance. Students will earn stripes between Belt Testing that will show advancement toward the next belt. No school age child will be allowed to promote to a higher belt level without passing academic and citizenship grades in all subjects. Students are encouraged to bring the Handbook with them and refer to it often. Remember that the journey to Black Belt is important. It is not a race to Black Belt and Black Belt is not the end but a new beginning in your martial arts training. All Black Belt tests require a two-month Black Belt Training class, curriculum and sparring weekly class, and any private lessons needed to learn weapon’s form. A verbal presentation and a typewritten outline must be turned in at least one week prior to the final examination. A Mach test must be passed to qualify for the Black Belt Test.

Minimum Time Requirements For Testing

(Master Instructor) (Degrees are based on ACTIVE years only)

BELT TESTING Explanation of Scores

Lower ranking students are graded first on attitude, second on application of techniques, and third on technical skill. As the student progresses, increasing emphasis is placed on

application and skill. Advanced students are graded on all three equally. 0-2 Poor - The student’s attitude, application and skill were all unacceptable. 3-4 Weak - The student’s performance was below average. 5-6 Average - The student performed the technique at an acceptable level. 7-8 Strong - The student’s performance was above average. 9-10 Excellent - The student’s performance was exceptional. A score of 10 usually Pass or Hold - A pass or hold will be determined on each section. The final

decision will be up to the Chief Instructor.

Any rank and credentials received through the testing of the Sport Karate America are subject to be revoked if at any time a student’s attitude or actions do not meet with the

standards and bylaws of SKA.

The chief Examiner may terminate a student’s testing if at any time the following occur: 1) The student’s health is in jeopardy; 2) The student will not follow the instructions of the Board; 3) The student is executing techniques that are dangerous or illegal techniques; 4) The student or his/her parents show a lack of courtesy or demonstrate poor sportsmanship.

EXECUTIVE TESTING Those students aged 45 and older may request to take the Executive Test. This test will have one-half of the free sparring requirements of the desired belt rank above blue belt. All rights, privileges and rank consideration will be the same.

VISITING OR TRANSFERRING BLACK BELTS Mr. Loebe will make the final decision after analysis of skill if his/her Black Belt will be honored in the dojo or if a lower rank should be applied. All transferring Black Belts will be required to test at some point to become an SKA Black Belt.
