Tis the season, isn’t it? Some college/university graduation or commencement ceremonies took place last weekend already and this week we are honoring our graduating seniors at the Sunday Masses. After Mass I’ll be driving to my niece’s graduation party lest I be disowned by my sister! Have you ever pondered the difference in meaning between “graduation” and “commencement”? Graduation indicates more of an ending or completion of a certain grade level or course of study, from pre-school to graduation school; it looks more backward at what has been accomplished. Commencement points more to a beginning: one stage has been completed and a new chapter now begins; it looks to the future with hopes, dreams and maybe a little anxiety.
Given the later date of Easter this year, almost all graduations or commencements will take place before the 50 Days of Easter ends on Pentecost, June 9
th. As we attend or learn about different ceremonies and parties, we might
ponder this distinction between graduation and commencement. Are we helping our young people to keep in positive tension past accomplishments and future plans? Superlatives can abound this time of year, both in graduating students’ reflections and also in commencement addresses. The challenge is to honestly recognize accomplishments achieved and help students prepare for the next chapter of their lives. These distinction of “graduating” or “commencing” can be applied to the Sacraments of Initiation, too, especially First Communion/Eucharist and Confirmation. Too often the approach can be that of “checking the box” or completing a preparation process instead of seeing the moment as beginning a new relationship with Christ and the Church. What if we helped our newly confirmed and First Communicants to develop and deepen this new “grade” of relationship?
Of course, the biggest challenge lies within ourselves: each of these celebrations, whether spiritual or academic, invites us to look at our own lives. Are we growing and developing through lifelong learning as Catholic Christians and citizens? This past year the Joint Pastoral Council has been reading, pondering and discussing the book, Forming Intentional Disciples. It is a very provocative book that describes the current situation in church life and the changing approach to faith, spirituality and religion. Cultural Catholics are a dying (or at least graying) breed and we need to take steps on the path to knowing and following Jesus in a more intentional way. As another academic year ends and we look at what has been accomplished, I invite you to take some time this summer to discern what might help you commence a new stage in becoming a more committed disciple and member of the Church. It’s not just a matter of flipping the tassel from one side of the mortarboard to the other!
Sincerely in Christ,

How can YOU help:
Adult Station Leader and Helper at the Hungry Herd Café - 4 people to prepare and help serve a
healthy snack each day. I would need 1 person to present the Lesson of the Day that goes with the
snack

Sciency-Fun Gizmos™,
Adult Assistant for the Kid Vid Cinema (we have a Leader) - 1 person to help each day. The kids will
