Dear Friends, I’ve been lax in a Pastor’s Corner of late. Plus, many other things have taken up the bulletin. But here goes a Corner for this week.
Bulletin As you can see our bulletin has changed dramatically over the last couple of months or so. I want to thank Joe and Linda Matera for making our bulletin so beautiful and organized. This has been a great help to me! What an outstanding job they’ve done! BRAVO!!! I’m hoping to add more pages to the bulletin as well, primarily to expand the font to make it easier to read and to offer pages for our fellow parishioners whose first language is Spanish. Also, by adding pages, I can have a little something to say in the Pastor’s Corner each week and offer some spiritual reflections as well.
Energy Cost Collection As we near 2020 I’ve decided to return to the Energy Cost collection for each month. These bills are very high and, unfortunately, our donations are down. My financial representative for the Archdiocese of New York has informed me that our collections are down 10% over the year. That’s not a nice loss to see! As it turns out, one probable cause is the changes I made to the second collection for energy. Therefore, I’m compelled to go back to it.
I was hoping that by not having a second collection each month for this purpose the parishioners would make up for it. That didn’t work out the way I hoped. Oh well, the best-laid plans of mice and men! So, whatever little you can give to help defray energy costs would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome Fr. Maxim Santhu During the month of October until the first week of November we have a guest priest joining us, Rev. Maxim Santhu. I knew Fr. Maxim when I was a parochial vicar at St. Aedan in Pearl River. Fr. Maxim helped us during the summer of 2016. He recently completed his master’s degree program in Rome and his bishop allowed him some extra vacation time in America. We’re blessed to have him. Having Father present for October allows me to attend to my obligatory five-day retreat for this year. This is a good thing too. It gives priests much needed time for silent prayer, reading scripture, and reflection. The effects of being a pastor/administrator can be taxing on the spiritual life of the priest. Retreats help readjust that. After my retreat I’ll be taking the remainder of my vacation days and then I’m off for the annual Pastors’ Conference in New Jersey.
I’ll see you on the rebound!

National Shrine of the Divine Mercy TripThe Ladies Guild will be organizing a trip to the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA on Wednesday, October 16th. We will be arranging carpools for the day, leaving St. John’s parking lot at 8:30AM. This will allow time to explore the grounds of the shrine. The weekday schedule has Confession and Adoration from 1:00 - 2:00 followed by Mass at 2:00. There is also a Rosary for Life at 1:30 and the Perpetual Novena and Chaplet of Divine Mercy along with veneration of St. Faustina’s relics starting at 3:00. Participants must bring their own lunch since food is not sold there. There is a gift shop with a large selection of Catholic books and religious articles. There will be signup sheets in the back of the churches through October 6th. Please provide your contact information including an email and phone number. We also need to know if you are able to drive, along with how many people you can take in your car, or if you need a ride. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Denema at [email protected] or 845-855-3275.
