Jewish values are the building blocks upon which the Stroum Jewish Community Center was founded. In the spring of 2012, our Board of Directors decided to formalize a list of these values to help define our goals and day-to-day operations.

The Board began by considering what the J represents to the community. We strive to make the J a welcoming and open environment, where people can make connections and build community. We celebrate Jewish life and culture and encourage everyone to participate, learn, and grow with us.

The seven Core Values upon which the Board settled (listed on the back cover of this report)provide a lens through which all of our programs, activities, and goals are filtered. We hope that, as you visit the J, you see these values being thoughtfully enacted every day.

The J continues to grow, and in 2011, we decided to strengthen our leadership team by hiring Renée Cohen Goodwin as our first-ever Chief Operating Officer. Goodwin, who oversees the J’s daily functions and keeps everything running smoothly, was instrumental in the creation of our Core Values.

Membership continues to increase and we are so thrilled that each and every one of you has chosen to make the J part of your life. We always appreciate member feedback and strive to make improvements to your experience here, which is why we recently replaced outdated strength equipment in our Fitness Center with 18 new pieces to move our facility more in line with current exercise trends. For more on these improvements, read the article on the next page.

Attendance continues to increase at our summer camp, both Mercer Island and at the Seattle Jewish Community School in north Seattle. These fun-filled camps foster friendships, encourage campers to discover themselves, and teach values that, while Jewish in nature, are applicable to everyone. In 2012, more than 800 campers spent their summer with us. We’re on track to welcome even more campers during summer 2013.

The fantastic programs the J offers wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated community of donors. Nearly 500 donors joined us for the seventh annual Circle of Friends luncheon last spring to celebrate the J and its continued commitment to the Jewish community, raising more than $300,000.

We are so grateful to our SJCC members, generous donors, our Board of Directors, numerous volunteers, and the entire SJCC faculty and staff. Together we work every day to create a welcoming community that stays true to our mission and values. We hope it is a place where everyone feels welcome and respected among a community of friends; a place where Jewish peoplehood is celebrated; a place where members want to learn, celebrate, and nurture themselves; and, most of all, a place that feels like home.

Last year, we decided to follow our members’ lead and get our Fitness Center in shape. With a fresh coat of paint, some of the latest and greatest strength equipment, and our dedicated staff of trainers, we hope the J’s Fitness Center is a place where you’re excited to work out.

The revamped Fitness Center now features 18 brand new state-of-the-art strength machines. This equipment reflects the latest thinking in the science of exercise, says Fitness General Manager JD Green, distributing weight better or letting people move with the machines to maintain a healthier range of motion.

During the process of selecting new machines, Green spent a lot of time chatting with members to get a sense for which machines they liked, which machines they were using, and what equipment they felt was lacking. Member input played a large part in his final decisions, as did hands-on research he conducted at the Athletic Business Conference in December 2011. Green wanted to stay away from machines that could be considered fads and stick with equipment that’s been proven effective. “I tried to think toward the future and select machines that would best benefit our members going forward,” he says.

Many of the new machines are upgraded versions of what was there before, though some equipment didn’t make the cut and other pieces are entirely new to our gym. Green sees this as an opportunity for people to connect with the skilled trainers who work in the Fitness Center. “It inspires people to have conversations with our trainers,” Green says. “If people are missing a machine they used to use, they can talk to a trainer and learn new – and sometimes better and safer – ways to do their favorite exercises.”

In addition to new equipment, the Fitness Center also has a fresh paint job. The grass green and linen color-blocked walls brighten up the space and accentuate the high ceilings. “Since it can be so gray outside, we didn’t want gray walls inside,” Green says.

Green has definitely seen an increase in the number of members who are visiting the gym. “Before we added the new equipment, we’d have maybe 200-250 users a day, at most,” he says. “But now, we often see more than 400 people a day.”

Our membership numbers reflect that. In the 2011/12 fiscal year, we had 1,300 membership units, which translates to more than 3,900 people. We ran a summer promotion from Memorial Day to Labor Day, during which we saw a 33% increase in membership from the previous year, in large part due to our great new strength equipment. So if you haven’t been to the Fitness Center since last summer, head on down and let our wonderful staff show you what you’ve been missing!

Marcie Wirth has seen a lot of children come through the Mercer Island Early Childhood School in her 23 years on staff, but there’s currently one bespectacled toddler in particular who’s stolen her heart: her granddaughter, Charley.

“It’s really wonderful having her here,” says Marcie, SJCC Special Events Manager, whose two children also attended ECS when they were younger. Since ECS is just a quick walk down the hall, Marcie often bookends her day with a trip to Charley’s classroom to say “hi” after she gets dropped off in the morning or right before she’s picked up in the afternoon. “I love that I can have those few moments with her every day. I’m a lucky Tati,” she says, using Charley’s term of endearment for her. (At least one other J staff member is also happy to have Charley nearby: her father, SJCC Program Director Zach Duitch.)

Two-year-old Charley has been attending ECS since she was three months old and Marcie is grateful Charley is growing up in such a nurturing, engaging, and community-focused environment. “The teachers Charley had in the infant room were so warm and caring and she still loves seeing them around the school.” Now that she’s a little older, Charley is able to experience more of the benefits of the school’s Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy, which encourages every student to explore, discover, and learn at their own pace – something Marcie has always valued. “I like that they don’t try to filter every child through one fixed curriculum,” she says.

Judaic education is also an integral part of daily life in ECS and something that’s very important to Marcie and her family. It certainly seems to have an impact on Charley. During a sing-along on a recent car ride, Marcie found herself out of song ideas. When she asked Charley what song she wanted to sing next, Charley excitedly suggested they sing the Hamotzi, the Hebrew prayer said before a meal.

Marcie is also happy to have Charley at ECS because she knows firsthand that relationships that begin there can last a lifetime. Many of Marcie’s closest friends are moms she met here when her kids were enrolled; there’s a boy in Charley’s class whose mom attended ECS with Charley’s mom, Marcie’s daughter, Jessica. Marcie believes generations of families continue to send their children to ECS becausethey know that not only will they receive a wonderful education, but they’ll also become part of a community. And that’s certainly a large of part of why she’s thrilled to have Charley at ECS.

“I know she’s safe and thriving and having fun,” says Marcie. “What more could a grandparent ask for?”

ECS In the Eyes of Our Grandparents

The Stroum Jewish Community Center is proud to be the center of Jewish celebrations during the entire year, bringing hundreds of families and thousands of people together to experience Jewish traditions and culture.

suKKotDozens of families shook the lulav and etrog together in the J’s sukkah in October 2011. The evening was clear and crisp; learning for the evening focused on seven native species of Israel: figs, pomegranates, wheat, barley, olives, grapes, and dates. For the first time, the Sukkot celebration included the SJCC Kesher Community Garden, with part of the food for dinner harvested from the garden plots; dessert was s’mores over the Garden campfire.

HaNuKKaH uNder tHe starsThe J’s annual Hanukkah celebration moved to evening with a new concept, “Hanukkah Under the Stars.” The Seattle kids rock band “The Not-Its” rocked out while young kids with glow sticks danced on a stage in the SJCC gym. Traditional tastes of Hanukkah were present, with latkes from Stopsky’s Delicatessen and made-to-order donuts from Street Donuts – warm from their oil fryer. More than 600 attendees donated 115 bottles of oil for the food bank at the Jewish Family Service.

Purim carNivalIn March 2012, more than 800 people joined the annual SJCC Purim Carnival, bringing together families from across the Seattle Jewish community, including families new to the area from Israel and across the U.S.; everyone is welcome. The spirit of Purim was alive in costumed kids playing arcade games, winning prizes, and running around with friends. Younger children got their faces painted and listened to Purim stories with PJ Library®.

YouNg familY Passover sederThe J hosted a Passover Seder on the campus of Seattle Jewish Community School in April 2012. Geared especially for families with kids younger than six years old, the story and traditions of Moses, matzoh and the Ten Plagues were brought to life through storytelling, art projects, and food. For the families who attended, it was an evening of learning and sharing community.

circle of frieNds luNcHeoNA sold-out crowd of nearly 500 came together for the SJCC Circle of Friends Luncheon in March 2012, our annual opportunity to celebrate the J’s impact on so many members of our community. The Luncheon raised more than $300,000 to make a remarkable difference in scholarships, programs, services, and classes.

Nate Ross, who received the Samuel and Althea Stroum Spirit of Inspiration Award, was an early board member and supporter from the 1960s. He shared his love of basketball with friends for dozens of years at the J, until he stopped playing when he was 82 years old.

Ross’s son, Neil, said, “For Dad, the J is more than just playing basketball. The vision of the Jewish Community Center was: this would be the center of the Jewish community and Jewish continuity. Jewish education, Jewish values, and Jewish identity are the cornerstones of what the JCC does. It’s a true center of the community that allows all of these wonderful things to happen.”

did You KNoW...an SJCC program for middle school students, “Tween Extreme,” is a partnership between BBYO, Junior NCSY, Temple Beth Am, and Temple De Hirsch Sinai. It offers Saturday night social events like a limousine scavenger hunt that engaged 135 kids, and haunted havdallah program that connected 50 kids.

BBYO brought 174 teenagers to the J and has made the J its home for nearly 40 years.

Hebrew High Seattle offered weekly classes at the J during the school year and brought a hundred teenagers to the J.

The J is the home of physical education programs for both Northwest Yeshiva High School and the French American School of Puget Sound, with more than 20 PE classes each week.

In addition to physical education programs during the school day, the SJCC pool partnered with the French American School of Puget Sound to provide afterschool swim lessons.
