FI ‘NEW SEEDS OF CONTEMPLATION’ – MINN FRANK MIFSUD

Il-ktieb New Seeds of Contemplation (NSC) jippreżentali perspettiva oħra, għalija ġdida, tat-

talb – dik tal-kontemplazzjoni. Tul il-ktieb, l-awtur Thomas Merton, Benedittin Trappist fit-

tradizzjoni Cistertian, jispjega fid-dettal id-diversi elementi li jwasslu għall-kontemplazzjoni

ispirata mill-ispiritwalità li huwa ħaddan. S’intendi, teżisti kontemplazzjoni ta’ tipi oħra

ispirati minn spiritwalitajiet differenti, li iżda mhux qed jiġu trattati hawnhekk.

Insib illi din is-sentenza ta’ Merton tiġbor fiha l-elementi ewlenin li

jwasslu għat-tip ta’ kontemplazzjoni li huwa jressqilna: “Since contemplation

is the union of our mind and will with God in an act of pure love that brings

us into obscure contact with Him as He really is, the way to contemplation is

to develop and perfect our mind and will and our whole soul. Infused

contemplation begins when the direct intervention of God raises this whole

process of development above the level of our nature: and then He perfects

our faculties by seeming to defeat all their activity in the suffering and

darkness of His infused light and love.” (pġ 214).

Il-kontemplazzjoni tista’ tħares lejha bħala mezz biex tidħol fil-preżenza t’Alla, speċjalment fl-ewwel żmienijiet tal-pratttika tagħha. Pero, skont Merton, il-kontemplazzjoni hija ferm aktar minn hekk – hija ‘Għotja ta’ Mħabba, hija stat ta’ Għaqda sħiħa bejn Alla u bejni, hija stat li bih tingħaqad ‘f’rieda waħda m’Alla’, tidħol għall-“ikun li trid int.” Għal Merton, din l-‘Għotja ta’ Mħabba’ huwa element ċentrali fil-kontemplazzjoni. Minnha jiġu l-grazzji għal diversi elementi oħra neċessarji. Huwa meta naċċetta din l-għotja li nkun nista’ nimxi ‘l quddiem fl-aspetti li jiddisponuni għall-kontemplazzjoni.

Il-kontemplazzjoni fi spiritwalità Trappista hija stil ta’ talb li jibbaża ruħu fuq diversi elementi. Dan li ġej huwa

biss sinteżi tal-elementi ewlenin fil-proċess li jwassal għal komunjoni ma’ Alla. Merton jagħmel il-punt f’diversi partijiet tal-ktieb illi dawn l-elementi huma lkoll mogħtija bi grazzja t’Alla, b’ infused love. Jgħid ukoll li aħna m’aħniex kapaċi naslu biex niksbu dawn l-elementi tal-kontemplazzjoni bir-raġuni tagħna. Joħroġ ċar li niddependu minn Alla biex nidħlu fil-prattika tal-kontemplazzjoni (pġ 185).

Merton jgħid li sabiex inħejju ruħna għall-livell proprju ta’ kontemplazzjoni, ikollna nitħabtu sew, u dan billi bl-

għajnuna tal-meditazzjoni u t-talb insaħħu l-għarfien tagħna tal-imhabba t’Alla, kif ukoll billi ninħallu mir-rabtiet tagħna ma’ ħwejjeġ materjali (pġ 214). Fil-fatt, il-qari mill-Iskrittura Mqaddsa, il-liturġija, is-sagramenti, it-talb bil-kliem, il-meditazzjoni, jibqgħu bżonnjuzi kemm bħala parti mill-ħajja ta’ kuljum, kif ukoll sabiex jiddisponuni għall-preżenza t’Alla u għat-talb kontemplattiv (pġ 9). Element ieħor neċessarju biex nidħol f’ dispożizzjoni għall-preżenza t’Alla, biex ningħaqad ma’ Alla, huwa s-silenzju.

Skont Merton, sabiex nasal għall-prattika ta’ kontemplazzjoni kif għandha tkun, huwa neċessarju li naddotta

bhala parti minn ħajti, fost oħrajn: l-umiltà, il-fidi, l-abbandun għar-rieda t’Alla. Minn naħa l-oħra ikun meħtieġ li incedi minn dak li jidher normali fil-bniedem: l-istinti, pjaċiri, rabta eżaġerata ma’ ħtiġijiet materjali, eċċ, kif ukoll nirrinunzja għal affarijiet li soltu nkun marbut magħhom (non-attachment - kap 28). Sabiex nasal għal dan l-istat ta’ ħajja, it-triq mhix faċli. Fil-qosor, dan ikun ifisser li ngħaddi minn proċess fejn nagħti ħarsa sewwa lejja nnifsi, gradwalment niskopri u nidħol fit-True Self / il-‘Jien Veru’, u fl-istess waqt nitlaq mill-egoċentricità tal-False Self / il-‘Jien Superfiċjali’ tiegħi – cioe` l-applikazzjoni ta’ “ … min irid isalva ħajtu, jitlifha, …” (Matt 16:25). Dan il-proċess kollu jfisser bidla fl-attitudni, bidla fil-prijoritajiet, fil-mod ta’ għixien, bidla fil-mod ta’ relazzjoni ma’ oħrajn, bidla għal ħajja li tevita u tirrinunzja għall-ħażen. Ifisser bidla pjuttost qawwija fija nnifsi, bidla li tagħmilni dejjem aktar disponibbli għal Alla, dejjem aktar miftuħ biex nilqa’ u nħaddem id-doni li jagħtini Alla, dejjem aktar kapaċi nagħti l-kunsens għall-preżenza t’Alla, aktar iffokat fuq dak li hu verament l-essenzjal u li jwassalni f’Għaqda ma’ Alla.

Fin-NSC Merton jisħaq diversi drabi illi t-talb fil-kontemplazzjoni jibbaża ruħu fuq il-fidi li hija hi stess don (Kap

18). Il-fidi li tiġi mill-aċċettazzjoni tat-tagħlim ta’ Kristu permezz tal-knisja tiegħu, hija l-ewwel pass (pġ146). Deskrizzjoni li għoġbitni dwar il-fidi fil-kontemplazzjoni hi din: “True contemplation is the work of a love that transcends all satisfaction and all experience to rest in the night of pure and naked faith. This faith brings us so close to God that it may be said to touch and grasp Him as He is, though in darkness. And the effect of such a contact is often a deep peace that overflows into the lower faculties of the soul and thus constitutes an “experience.” (pġ 211)

Hawn fuq Merton jagħmel ukoll il-punt li biex nasal għal livell għoli ta’ kontemplazzjoni ser ikolli ngħaddi minn

fażijiet ta’ dlam. Javżani li “As a matter of fact, without the groundwork of long and patient trial and slow progress in the darkness of pure faith, contemplation will never really be learned at all.” Dawn il-fażijiet għandi nħares lejhom bħala don t’Alla li jsaffuni u jqarrbuni aktar lejh (pġ 207 - 210).

L-umiltà kif imfissra mill-awtur (Kap 25) hija l-qofol għall-fidi. Mingħajrha l-fidi tkun fjakka. Għalhekk l-umiltà

hija element prinċipali li wieħed għandu jħaddan sabiex isostni l-fidi meħtieġa. “It (humility) is the only key to faith, with

which the spiritual life begins: for faith and humility are inseparable. In perfect humility all selfishness disappears and

your soul no longer lives for itself or in itself for God: and it is lost and submerged in Him and transformed into Him.”

Laqatni ħafna ir-raġunament ta’ Merton li b’dan il-metodu Trappista ta’ talb nistgħu naslu għal kuntatt dirett ma’ Alla, għal ‘Għaqda sħiħa’ miegħu. “ … we reach the ‘Who’ (Christ) – the mysterious ineffable Divine Person – directly and immediately through grace and love, without images (or with them if you like, but this is less direct) and without rationalisation. The real mystery of Christian agape (charity) is this power that the Person of the Word, in coming to us, has given to us. The power of a direct and simple contact with Him, not as with an object only, a ‘thing’ seen or imagined, but in the transsubjective union of love which does not unite an object with a subject but two subjects in one affective union.” (pġ 153)

Id-don tal-kontemplazzjoni Alla ma jagħtihx lil dik il-persuna li mhix disposta tagħti l-kunsens tagħha għar-

rieda t’Alla. Ġesu` ħabb lil kulhadd. Ir-rieda tiegħu għalija hi li nħobb lil kulħadd. Jekk jien irrid li ningħaqad miegħu, Hu jistenna li jien ningħaqad mar-rieda tiegħu. Għalhekk, il-kontemplazzjoni għandha twassal għall-azzjoni li nħobb lil kwalunkwe persuna, hi min hi, bla distinzjoni. (pġ77). “Not to accept and love and do God’s will is to refuse the fullness of my existence.” (pġ33). Mill-banda l-oħra, “By consenting to His will with joy and doing it with gladness I have His love in my heart, because my will is now the same as His love and I am on the way to becoming what He is, Who is Love.” (pġ 18)

Biex wieħed jifhem x’inhi l-kontemplazzjoni jeħtieġlu jkollu l-esperjenza tagħha. Hija realtà li ma tistax tiġi

spjegata, ma tistax tiġi mgħallma, mhix haġa li tiġi analizzata b’mod oġġettiv u xjentifiku (pġ 6). Merton ifisser il-kontemplazzjoni bħala realtà soġġettiva fil-misteru t’ Alla: “Contemplation does not arrive at reality after a process of deduction, but by an intuitive awakening in which our free and personal reality becomes fully alive to its own existential depths, which open out into the mystery of God.” (pġ9)

Inħossni grat lejn Alla li tani l-grazzja li (i) ningħaqad ma’ grupp żgħir ta’ persuni li qed jipprattikaw is-Centering

Prayer (it-Talba tal-Kunsens) fejn bdejt il-prattika tal-kontemplazzjoni fil-metodu Trappist, u li (ii) naqra u nomgħod x’kiteb Thomas Merton fin-NSC. Dawn iz-zewġ fatturi lili juruni li t-talb tal-kontemplazzjoni jagħmel sens. Il-ktieb għeni nwessa’ l-perspettiva tiegħi, urieni kemm hemm elementi li għad jehtieġli nindirizza sabiex nidħol fil-kontemplazzjoni kif għandha tkun. Il-metodu Trappista li qrajt dwaru jgħidli li, jekk verament irrid li nidħol ‘f’Għaqda sħiħa’ m’Alla, għandi quddiemi numru ta’ sfidi għal tibdil – fil-mod kif ngħix, kif nirrelata m’Alla, kif nikseb il-ħelsien spiritwali, tibdil biex nilqa’ u nwettaq ir-rieda tiegħu. Għax qed nara li t-triq hija waħda iebsa; jeħtieġli naħdem fuqha billi nitlob l-għajnuna t’Alla, nieħu direzzjoni spiritwali u ngħaddi minn dixxerniment.

Core services of the St Jeanne Antide Foundation ---- as at

November 2012 1. The Ċentru Antida: a drop-in

centre in Tarxien open 5 days a week from 7.30am to 5.15pm and later on certain days. Anyone from the

neighbouring communities can drop by to seek

support, volunteer, ask for information, participate in groups. Around 64 (current) volunteers and 52 Fourth Formers from the adjacent Immaculate Conception Girls Secondary School in Tarxien provide volunteer support at the centre and are attached to different services. A monthly electronic magazine keeps workers, volunteers and collaborators abreast of developments. A group of 12 Volunteer Recepionists take turns at reception and visitor welcome work. 2. The Social Work & Counselling Service: this is a generic service. Service users are identified through (a) outreach work in zones with a concentration of vulnerable families; (b) referrals by parish priests and parish volunteers; (c) referrals by other organisations is encouraged so that families are supported as close as possible to their homes and within their own context. University students carry out their practice placement within

this service. These currently include 3 Masters in Counselling students (all 3 professionals); and 1 B.A.(Hons.) Social Work student. Linked to this service are the following initiatives: i) Social Workers and Counsellors provide a holistic package of support services to vulnerable and poor families from the localities of Tarxien, Paola, Fgura, Żabbar and Santa Lucia and sometimes from other localities as well. ii) Emotional Freedom Service: Therapeutic service for persons with emotional blockages that hinder them from moving forward in life. iii) the Daqqa T’Id Project involving retired men in handymen work with very poor families. iv) the Befriending Service through which lonely, house-bound frail and sick persons are supported regular home-visits by Volunteer Befrienders, one of whom is a nurse. v) Regular self-esteem groups for service users. vi) NEW 2012: SOAR group – a service-user led support and advocacy group for victims and survivors of violence in intimate relationships. vii) Social Work Service to the

Malta Community Chest Fund – a commissioned service. 3. Community Social Work Projects: (i) The VINĊI Project: this is a community social work project. Work is being carried out in 9 depressed neighbourhoods. Different group-based opportunities are offered: literacy to young persons; depression support group; carers’ support group; Family Club for vulnerable young single mothers. The team is made up of a social workers, 1 community worker, a priest who forms part of the team, a psychiatric nurse (one day a week). (ii) The Ġamra Project: based in Fgura, the project has set up a drop-in office in partnership with the Diaconia Commission of the Parish. Outreach has been completed in several neighbourhoods and public housing zone. Groupwork is offered to depressed persons and to family caregivers. A group of 10 parish volunteers are being trained for outreach, befriending work and to run drop-in office on a bi-weekly basis. 4. The LWIEN Service (for which funding is being requested from the Good Causes Fund) – a caring for family caregivers service offering holistic support to family caregivers of chronically mentally ill persons. Support includes whole family consultations, social work support, counselling, support groups (on depression; on caring). The Senior Psychiatric Nurse responsible for this service works alongside social workers across services, mentors social workers and carries out door-to-

door outreach work with them. As a respite for caregivers and as a therapeutic measure that benefits mentally ill persons themselves, supported volunteering is encouraged. 5. The Learning Support Service: non-formal lifelong learning opportunities are offered to vulnerable persons of all age groups supported by the Social Work and Counselling Service. i) Homework Support Service: 25 Volunteer Learning Support Tutors and Mentors provide learning support to children from supported vulnerable. The service is offered on a one-to-one basis so as to create an enriching bond. ii) Spark Project: 52 Form 4 students from the adjacent Immaculate Conception Secondary School volunteer to run arts, crafts, cooking, dance activities for vulnerable children from families supported by the

Foundation and from the neighbouring St Rita Home for children run by the Ursuline Sisters. This is a joint School-Foundation project and is co-ordinated by a Religion School Teacher and the Foundation’s Learning Support Co-ordinator. iii) Outings for children. iv) Summer Smiling Kids & Teens programme. v) A Maths Group and a Creative Writing Group for vulnerable secondary school students. vi) Literacy group for young persons and single mothers. vii) NannaKola Clubs for grandmothers who care for their grandchildren. 6. Overseas Development Aid Projects: One project in Pakistan concluded (building of a rural health clinic) and two underway – Community Development in South Sudan and curriculum

support to a vocational education and training centre for teenage mothers in Central African Republic. 8. Ċentru Familti: a new initiative being developed in partnership with the Paola Local Council and the Paola (Kristu Re) Parish. This Centre will be a national hub for informal and non-formal group-work activities for caregivers, victims of abuse in intimate relationships, parents, lonely older persons, siblings with a sick family member; young carers. Other support includes: Contemplative Prayer group; a monthly e-magazine, forgiveness work; volunteering opportunities for all age groups; supported volunteering for mentally ill persons; fundraising events. Ftit ilu, Sr Margherita Buhagiar, Soru tal-Karità, għalqet 50 soru. Tgħidilna hi xi tfisser

għaliha din il-ħajja konsagrata. “Li ghalaqt 50 sena mas-sorijiet tal-Karità jfsser għalija

50 sena ta’ konsagrazzjoni lil Alla. Ħdimt fl-għalqa Tiegħu skont il-Vangelu u l-kariżma tar-regola tagħna. Kont għadni żgħira meta ħassejt is-sejħa u x-xewqa li nsir soru. U meta oħti daħlet soru mas-Sorijiet tal-Karità, aktar u aktar ma tkattritli din ix-xewqa.

“Bdejt il-ħajja reliġjuża magħhom, minkejja li ma kontx naf sewwa xi tfisser ħajja konsagrata. Pero, aktar ma taru l-jiem, aktar ma bdejt napprezza u nifhem l-għażla li għamilt, u bil-għajnuna t’Alla, issaħħaħt fil-vokazzjoni tiegħi.

Overseas Development Project: Assistance to the Nemesia Vocational Training Centre for Poor Women in Berberati, Central African Republic

This is a SJAF project in support of an initiative involving the skills development of poor single teenage mothers and other young women. The Nemesia Vocational Training Centre for Young Women is run by the community of Sisters of Charity based in Berberati. The project involves the upgrading of the facilities and resources at the Nemesia Centre: – Procurement of much needed text-books for the various components of the curriculum – literacy, literature, science. - Provision of water for the home economics and kitchen garden and personal hygiene aspects of the curriculum; this has been achieved through the digging of a borehole and the installation of a pump; - Procurement of equipment for the garment making curriculum and for the kitchen. - Procurement and installation of an electricity generator for the running of the sewing machines.

A key outcome of this project is that the Nemesia Vocational Centre is now being recognised by the government as

a vocational college.

VOICES OF THE PROJECT BENEFICIARIES --- 3RD YEAR STUDENTS...

A. water that's life, we now have water [thanks to the new Project's borehole and pump] in our institution. It allows us to wash after EPS [Physical Education]. We students are a priority for our families. The drilled bore-hole well and pump helps those suffering from typhoid, the amoebiasis, Bilharzia. The borehole and pump benefits the wider population, as the national company’s water supply is often problem-ridden. It is to the Project's borehole and pump at our Centre Nemesia in fact that the population has recourse. B. The new machines help us to master the skill of sewing, which will enable us to earn our livelihood. They permit us to sew our own clothing including our school uniforms. They also allow us to create our own fashions and methods. They enable us to pass our course on site instead of going elsewhere. C. The electricity generator helps us make the embroidery, supply rooms when it rains, to charge our mobile devices. It gives us electrical energy to run the computers, so that with the help of Providence and with the efforts and concerns of our Sister, we may complete our course with success. Our needs for our future:

-- Computers as 21st century tools for courses in information technology. -- Two buildings for the literacy students who do not have a place to study. -- [More] embroidery machines. -- A small pharmaceutical supply facility for our use. -- An amphitheater for our school events. -- Credits after we complete our degrees. -- Scholarships to further our studies abroad.

2nd year students... A. After physical Education, we can now, because of the new borehole pump, get cleaned up and become refreshed. B. Because of the new sewing machines, everybody has learned to sew and this is good. C. Installing the generator is proper, because thanks to it the electrical machines can function. 1st year students... A. Water is economically essential for our establishment. We can now drink good water regularly. We can now wash after working in the kitchen garden. Moreover, especially for us women of the school, water is an

important tool for body health and maintenance. B. The sewing machines received under the Project are good tools for teaching sewing. Without them, the

workshops of the school would be useless. We should however be taught the maintenance of these machines, so we want to learn these technical skills.

C. Installation, under the Project, of an electricity generator for the machinery and for lighting is a valuable asset for us students and the electricity will also help us preserve for a long time, in the freezer, the dishes that we cook as part of our home economics classes. The books purchased: The books are quite indispensable for the administration that can now meet the needs of teachers for preparing their lessons. It is a great joy for us to have at our disposal various text books that allow us to enrich the our assignments and taught lessons. Our young women rejoice when during a course, the teachers asks them to do research in the reading books from the library to better assimilate the material. We see them reading the books by themselves, in their effort to grasp what professors have had to say. The home economics learning permits our young women to share out the household chores to their children according to their ages. They themselves will become good home-makers, with foresight in their management roles. Borehole drilling and pump installation: The borehole drilling and water-pump installation at college was a godsend for us, the young women thanked the installation of the drilling because they had difficulty in drinking potable water especially during the drought when they have to carry out practical work as part of the cooking instruction. They were very far from the establishment where they could purchase water. This has in the past stretched the duration of practice sessions beyond the scheduled time, and this delayed the examination. Now the solution is found we have no more difficulties in the practical lessons on cooking.

About the health of our young women, since we had bore-hole pump drilling and pump installation the rates of various diseases from water such as: typhoid, hepatitis, cholera, schistosomiasis and amoebiasis is down and the young women can clean their hands before eating during recreation periods. The electricity generator: The generator is one of the essential means to carry out our grassroots formal education work. Our community suffers seriously from a lack of possible energy sources, and this constitutes an obstacle to social development.

The city of Berberati, in which our college is situated, suffers from severe lack of energy. This time the college

Nemesia by this grant is freed from this problem, working time will be reduced, and productivity will be big enough to stimulate client demand. This is all because the generator for electrical machines can now run, and all work done in the workshop is thus facilitated. As for the electric light it is welcome because, when there is rain and it is dark it helps us to see properly.

American Foundation presents cheques to local institutions – SJAF included

The American Foundation for Maltese Charities, a New York based charity, recently donated funds to 18 Maltese charitable organisations during a ceremony hosted by US ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley. Since its inception in the early 1960’s, the American Foundation for Maltese Charities has donated over $1.5 million.

The charity founders were all Maltese immigrants who wanted to share their prosperity with those less fortunate in their homeland. Ambassador Abercrombie-Winstanley said, “It is an honor to be with the representatives of such an altruistic organisation who have carried on the good work of the American Foundation of Maltese Charities in providing funds to Maltese charitable institutions. “The foundation’s many donors exemplify the commitment to volunteerism, solidarity, and compassion that both the Maltese and American peoples share.”

3. Learning Support Service open for

vulnerable persons supported by

Foundation Social Workers. Includes:

For Children: homework support for

primary level students; weekly

creative writing and maths support

for secondary level students;

summer programme; weekly arts,

music and crafts sessions. For adults:

non-formal learning opportunities for

vulnerable adults such as self-esteem

groups & literacy. For grandparents

who regularly care for their

grandchildren: educational clubs.

4. LWIEN Service - caring for family

carer-givers: support for family

caregivers of persons with mental

health problems. Includes family

consultations, counselling, support

groups, home-visits, social work

5. Community Work Projects in

Żabbar and Fgura undertaken in

collaboration with the parishes.

Services include social work in zones

with a concentration of families in

difficulty, counselling, groupwork,

mental health nurse, literacy

support, home-visits, befriending.

7. Overseas Development Projects:

SJAF assists the Sisters of Charity in

the development of projects in

developing countries. To date:

projects in Pakistan, Central African

Republic and South Sudan.
