    1.3.1 Overview

    Features

The ZXMSG 5208 device has the following features:

l Supports NMS interfacel Uses SNMP to communicate with NMSl Supports ZTE NetNumen NMS

NMS can manage and maintain ZXMSG 5208 device. ZXMSG 5208 sends statusinformation to NMS through Trap message. The status information includes configurationchanges or alarms.

    1.3.2 Configuring In-band NMS

    Short Description

Through this configuration, NMS canmanage andmaintain ZXMSG5208 device in in-bandNMS mode. In in-band mode, NMS can inter-exchange information through the servicechannel of the device. It is flexible in networking without any auxiliary equipment, whichsaves users' costs. However, it is not easy for maintenance.

    1.3.3 Configuring Network Management ACM

    Short Description

Perform the procedure to configure NMS ACM.

    Prerequisite

Log in to the device through HyperTerminal, Telnet or SNMP NMS mode.

    Context

Configuring NMS ACM aims to restrict external devices to visit the ZXMSG 5208 device.

In the real networking application, usually the device is configured with an in-band NMS IPaddress and connected to public network or operation and maintenance network throughuplink interface. All users in the network can visit the device. However, for the sake of safeoperation of the device, only a few users are allowed to configure the device. Therefore, the function is realized on the device to control users' access to device NMS module. It isnamed as NMS ACM (Access Control List for Management).

ACM enable-switch can be configured on the device. If ACM function is configured asenable, the unmatched IP packets in the ACM list are discarded. For the source IPaddresses that are not in ACM list, the device does not respond to the ARP requestpackets and ICMP packets, which prevents the illegal device from obtaining the MACaddress and IPaddress of the local device and launching attacks.

    Steps

    1. Configure ACM entry.2. Enable ACM function.

Note:l During ACM configuration, make sure to configure the IP address of the NMS

computer before enabling ACM function. Otherwise, once function is enabled, itis impossible to use Telnet or SNMP NMS terminal to manage the device.

l ACM can be configured with 16 entries maximum.

    End of Steps

    Result

    NMS ACM is configured successfully.

    Example

The following examples display how to configure ACM:

l Permit all IP addresses in the 1010.10.0 network segment to visit the device throughTelnet or SNMP.

2.3 IP Fax Service ConfigurationThis section includes the following:

l Overviewl Configuring IP fax service access instance

    2.3.1 Overview

    Introduction

IP fax is similar to Internet telephony, but it is optimized for transmitting fax data. IP faxgenerally works by sending fax data over the Internet to strategically placed fax servers.Once a fax arrives at the server closest to the final destination, it is transferred onto normaltelephone lines and transmitted like a normal fax. Because the data is transmitted overthe Internet for most of the journey, the total cost of transmission is much less than if ittraveled over long-distance telephone lines like conventional faxes.

    Service Specifications

ZXMSG 5208 supports the following fax modes:

    l Full-control T.30l Full-control T.38l T.30 Transparentl T.38 Transparent

It is recommended to use full-control mode.

3.1 VLAN ConfigurationThis section includes the following:

l Overviewl Basic VLAN configurationl VLAN stacking configuration

    3.1.1 Overview

    Service Description

VLAN is a technology to achieve virtual work group by dividing the network into individualsegments logically instead of physically through local network device. The IEEE publishedthe IEEE 802.1q protocol standard draft to standardize VLAN implementation in 1999.

    Service Specification

ZXMSG 5208 supports maximum 4094 VLANs.

VLAN usage is listed in Table 3-1.

  • ZXMSG 5208 Configuration Manual (NetNumen)

    Table 3-1 VLAN Usage

    VLAN Usage Remarks

Basic VLAN Used to separate ports

l For Ethernet port and PON port, it is used in NMS and cascade.

l For xDSL service access, there are two applications:

PVLAN mode (default): One VLAN can contain multiple xDSL

service ports and the service flows among the xDSL service

ports are separated. The service flows between these service

ports and NMS ports are inter-connective. The service flows

between each VLAN is separated too. One VLAN can be con-

nected with multiple users, which reduces the occupancy of

    VLAN numbers.

Non-PVLAN mode: One VLAN contains only one xDSL ser-

vice port. The service flows between VLANs are separated.

As there is a one-to-one mapping relation between VLAN and

access user, access user can be differentiated according to

    VLAN.

VLAN Stacking Used to expand VLAN

VLAN packets with stacking property contain inner-layer/outerlayer

VLAN labels allocated byZXMSG 5208. The upper-layer BAS device

can authenticate dual-VLAN according to the two layers of labels and

increase user numbers. In the upper-layer network of Layer-2 working

mode, the device can forward packets directly through outer-layer

VLAN+MAC to provide ISP with all the service functions.
