Founded in 1995 by two Jesuit priests, the Ignatian Volunteer Corps offers men and women, age 50 and older, the opportunity to engage in direct, hands-on service with the materially poor while growing in their Christian faith through personal and shared reflection.

IVC members commit to 600 hours of service per year (2 days/week, Sept.-June) and participate in a comprehensive spiritual formation program in the Jesuit tradition including monthly community meetings, individual spiritual reflection, and retreat experiences. Currently, 60 IVC Chicago members are serving throughout Cook, Lake and DuPage counties in a wide variety of volunteer settings. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The custom of genuflec on is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of e que e to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you're visi ng an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the "when in Rome" rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small por on of the eucharis c bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharis c dove, but it is not a center of a en on or devo on. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a "metasis," toward the altar--bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflec on toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reserva on is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharis c table is the principal sign of Christ's presence in the church building. If you have ever par cipated in the liturgy of Dedica on of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar's significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence! --Rev. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En Uruguay se celebra la fiesta patronal más grande durante el mes de junio. Celebran a san Cono, un santo italiano del siglo doce. En el siglo diecinueve los inmigrantes italianos que vivían en Uruguay deseaban tener una capilla para honrar la memoria de este santo, oriundo de la provincia de Salerno, Italia. En junio de 1885, las campanas de una modesta capillita anunciaron el recibimiento de una imagen de san Cono que llegó en procesión. Desde entonces esta costumbre italiana se fue haciendo parte integral de la devoción cris ana en Uruguay. Cono fue el hijo único de una pareja anciana que vivía en la ciudad de Teggiano, Salerno. Según la leyenda, una noche mientras dormían, esta pareja soñó un cono de luz que brotaba de la madre. Al nacer el niño decidieron llamarlo Cono. Desde muy niño, Cono mostró un afán por las cosas de Dios y a los dieciséis años ingresó a un monasterio benedic no siguiendo el consejo de una voz interior que lo invitaba a consagrase al Señor. The Real Purpose

As we hear in the lyrics of a familiar church hymn, we are made for service, to care for each other. The students of St. Joseph School are taking action in a variety of ways.

A small group of eighth grade NJHS students are collecting items to donate to a local animal shelter. Food, collars, leashes, bedding, and cleaning supplies are just some of the items needed. Donating items will help the shelter care for the animals and provide families with supplies when adopting a new pet. There is still time to help these students help pets in need. Items or monetary donations can be dropped off in the school office. We have a multi-age group made up of kindergarten through second grade students who are studying the rain forest. In addition to studying interesting facts about the animals and

vegetation, they learned the importance of helping protect the animals and the rain forest environment. With the help of Mrs. Carrie Johnson, a bake sale was organized by the group. Posters and a video advertisement were created to promote the sale of the treats. Announcements were made to the student body to buy a treat at lunch on Thursday to help the animals in need. Our students are learning and living out the message of the song: Life can be so lonely when nobody cares; Life can be so empty when nobody shares; But if we give ourselves both time and again; The happiness of Christ will live within.

Como oímos en la letra de un himno familiar de la iglesia, estamos hechos para el servicio, para cuidarnos el uno al otro. Los estudiantes de la Escuela de San José están tomando acción en una variedad de maneras. Un pequeño grupo de estudiantes del octavo grado del NJHS esta recolectando artículos para donar a un refugio de animales local. Alimentos, cuellos, correas, artículos de cama y limpieza son necesarios. Donando esto artículos ayudara al cuidado de los animales y proveerá a las familias con artículos de cuidado cuando adopten una nueva mascota. Todavía hay tiempo de ayudar a los estudiantes para que puedan ayudar a los animales en necesidad. Artículos o donaciones monetarias se pueden dejar en la oficina de la escuela. Tenemos un grupo de estudiantes compuesto de niños en Kinder a Segundo grado que están estudiando la selva tropical. Además de estudiar hechos interesantes sobre los animales y vegetación, aprenden la importancia de ayudar a proteger a los animales en el ambiente de la selva tropical. Con la ayuda de Mrs.Carrie Johnson, una venta de pastelitos fue organizada por el grupo. Carteles y anuncios de video fueron creados para promover la

venta de pastelitos. Se hicieron anuncios al cuerpo estudiantil para que compraran pastelitos a la hora del almuerzo el Jueves para ayudar a los animales necesitados. Nuestros estudiantes están aprendiendo y viviendo el mensaje de la canción: La vida puede ser tan solitaria cuando nadie se preocupa; La vida puede estar vacía cuando nadie comparte ; Pero si nos damos a nosotros mismos una y otra vez; La felicidad de Cristo vivirá en el interior.
