TEN WAYS TO STEP UP YOUR MASS ENGAGEMENT
Improving etiquette during the central hour of the week. ARRIVE EARLY AND STAY. “Passing from a secular atmosphere to a sacred atmosphere requires some preparation,” a priest said. Arriving at least 10 minutes early would do. This helps prepare the heart and mind for the Lord who comes to us, he added. And don’t leave early. One can leave only after the celebrant processes out because “he’s acting in the presence of Christ,” a priest emphasized. DRESS UP FOR JESUS. What we wear says a lot about where we’re going. A priest recommended dressing “as if one was going to an audience with someone more important than the Pope,” which is certainly the case. For this reason, they discourage wearing anything that may seem as if you were going to the beach or a sporting event, for both men and women. “May your body and clothes manifest your heart before God and your brothers,” another priest added. CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN
Next week, our collection will be tithed in support of
the Catholic Communication Campaign. This
campaign connects people with Christ, here and
around the world in developing countries, through
the internet, television, radio, and print
media. And fifty percent of funds collected
remain in our diocese to fund local
communications efforts. Your support helps
spread the gospel message! To learn more, visit

Congratulations to our first
communion recipients

The Church - The people of God... Characteristics of the People of God The People of God is marked by characteristics that clearly distinguish it from all other religious, ethnic, political, or cultural groups found in history: “Christ is the Head of this Body”… Christ “is the head of the body, the Church.” He is the principal of creation and redemption. Raised to the Father’s glory, “in everything he is preeminent,” especially in the Church, through whom he extends his reign over all things. Christ unites us with his Passover: All his members must strive to resemble him, “until Christ be formed” in them. “For this reason we...are taken up into the mysteries of his life,...associated with his sufferings as the body with its head, suffering with him, that with him we may be glorified.” Christ provides for our growth: To make us grow toward him, our head, he provides in his Body, the Church, the gifts and assistance by which we help one another along the way of salvation. Christ and his Church thus together make up the “whole Christ’ (Christus totus). The Church is one with Christ. The saints are acutely aware of this unit: Let us rejoice then and give thanks that we have become not only Christians, but Christ himself. Do you understand and grasp, brethren, God’s grace toward us? Marvel and rejoice: we have become Christ. For if he is the head, we are the members; he and we together are the whole man…. The fullness of Christ then is the head and the members. But what does “head and members’ mean? Christ and the Church. Our redeemer has shown himself to be one person with the holy Church whom he has taken to himself. Head and members form as it were one and the same mystical person. A reply of St. Joan of Arc to her judges sums up the faith of the holy doctors and the good sense of the believer: “About Jesus Christ and the Church, I simply know they’re just one thing, and we shouldn’t complicate the matter.” “The Church is the Bride of Christ”…cont. in next bulletin)
Volunteers needed to read at Saturday and
Sunday Masses. Readers are lay persons
who have been trained to proclaim God’s word
during the Mass. Readers embrace a special
feeling for Scripture and share this love with the
congregations.
Our readers rotate so your time would be needed only
occasionally. No experience or special talent required. Please
contact the office for further information or if you are
interested in signing up.
Question: Why do some dioceses move holy days, or not
even celebrate them at all? Doesn’t everyone do the same
thing?
Answer: The short answer is no, not everyone does the same
thing. Although the church is universal, there are many local customs and saints that each country, sometimes just a region, will honor. For example, feast days and patronal days may not be major feast days on the church’s universal calendar, but are celebrated as such in one place. Holy days of obligation are the same way. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has a certain amount of discretion in choosing days which best reflect the local church’s experience and history. Another reason certain feasts are moved is a practical one. With limited clergy, or a great difficulty for people to get to Mass, the feast day may be transferred to a Sunday. The rationale is that if a significant feast should be part of the church’s celebration, then better to do so on a Sunday when people and clergy are available, rather than to try to fit it on a day when one or the both cannot be there. Christmas and Immaculate Conception are always observed as days of obligation. In the USA we celebrate six holy days of obligation. There are also other special days and they are ranked, in order of importance, as solemnity, feast, memorial and optional memorial.
THE MASS CELEBRATING THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD WILL BE CELEBRATED ON
SUNDAY, MAY 13TH
