May 10, 2015 † Sixth Sunday of Easter V MBS Fourth Grade Takes to the Sea!
Ahoy! Last week the MBS fourth graders travelled back in time to the seafaring world of Richard Henry Dana Jr.’s Two Years Before the Mast. The sailors were bid a fond farewell by the Mission School student body that held posters and shouted “bon voyage” to the adventurous travelers. The wayfarers boarded the Pilgrim for a two-year (two day) “voyage” from Boston to Alta California in the 1830s. The new sailors hoisted cargo, rowed longboats, raised sails, stood watch, swabbed the decks and sang chanteys, all under the watchful eye of a strict and demanding crew. At night, as they lay in their bunks they enjoyed special letters from home and drank hot chocolate to keep them warm during their late night watch. The fourth graders thought the experience was “exciting”, “challenging” and “fun” and will cherish the memories for a lifetime.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the Basilica on May 23rd at 10:30 a.m. for Fr. Joe Scerbo, S.A. The celebrant for this Mass will be Fr. Dave Heney from the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and former pastor of St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, where Fr. Joe was in residence.
All are welcome to this Mass in celebration and remembrance of Fr. Joe.

MOTHER’S DAY ROSES
Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10th is a celebration for all mothers. Roses will be available Saturday May 9th after the evening Masses and after the Mother’s Day morning Masses on the parking lot side of the basilica. Your donation will go to support Birth Choice Health Clinics which are licensed community care clinics offering medical consultations, ultrasounds, pregnancy tests , and STD testing. They are also available to help women with whatever else is needed during this time of their lives. Your donation will provide significant financial support for all of the Birth Choice Health Clinics in our community. Consider roses for your wife, your mom, or your grandma!
May 16 and 17 the Diocesan Department of Cemeteries will be here after all Masses distributing information about their services. The Catholic Cemeteries is providing a pre-need planning program for Catholic families in Orange County. Family burial arrangements are among the most important and inevitable decisions a Catholic must make. Because of the many emotional and financial savings that result by planning these arrangements in advance of need, the Diocese of Orange urges all Catholic families to learn about their burial options. The apostolic and administrative work of Catholic Cemeteries truly reflects the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

Summer School and Youth Camps at Mater Dei
Mater Dei High School is hosting summer school for all high school students and a variety of youth camps in its state-of-the-art facilities. Credit Recovery and Advancement classes available to all high school students. The youth camps will provide competitive skill development in a positive and fun environment. Camps being offered such as: Band & Drum Line, Color Guard, Baseball, Basketball, Cheer and Song, Cross Country, Dance, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Robotics, Soccer, Softball, Swim, Tennis, Theatre Arts, Track and Field, Volleyball, Water polo and Wrestling. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA
MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Hoy volvemos a celebrar la Pascua de cada domingo. El Señor resucitado es quien nos convoca, nos da su ESPÍRITU, quiere unirnos en la Comunidad Cristiana y nos envía a difundir su mensaje. Por eso nos dirá el evangelio: “Yo le pediré al padre que os dé otro defensor, que esté siempre con vosotros, el Espíritu de la verdad”. ¿El mensaje? Hemos sido ELEGIDOS PARA AMAR. No es ningún slogan publicitario. Es la razón y el objetivo de nuestra fe en Jesús. Los cristianos hemos sido elegidos para dar testimonio del mandamiento del amor en medio de un mundo que vende y compra el amor a cualquier precio de rebaja y lo convierte en artículo de consumo. En un mundo donde reina el egoísmo, el odio entre hermanos, las guerras que matan y destruyen, el hambre que destroza tantas vidas, es necesario que se anuncie, se haga conocer y se dé testimonio del EVANGELIO del AMOR. Y si queremos ser fieles al Maestro, ese amor es gratuito y universal, generoso y desinteresado, fraterno y verdadero, sin esperar recompensa. ¿Será todo esto un sueño? ¿Se habrá equivocado Jesús al proponernos este ideal y esta tarea? Lo cierto es que nos dice: “El Espíritu Santo será quien os lo enseñe todo y os vaya recordando lo que os he dicho”. En este marco y con este mensaje pascual, celebramos el DÍA DEL ENFERMO en las Comunidades Cristianas.

EDUCACIÓN RELIGIOSA
Domingos de 10:30a.m. a 12:00 mediodía Lunes de 5:30p.m a 7:00p.m. La Educación, la mejor opción para cualquier ser humano. La educación religiosa para niños es importante, ya que esa es una de las primeras conexiones de la fe Católica con su identidad como personas llamadas a vivir la fe. Es donde sus hijos empiezan a entender lo que significa pertenecer a una comunidad de fieles. La Iglesia Católica cree que los padres de familia son los primeros educadores en la fe de sus hijos y que el papel de la parroquia es ayudarles y apoyarles. PADRES de Familia ya estamos en la línea recta para cerrar nuestro año de catequesis. Sin embargo, la educación no termina con el año catequético sino que continua en tu casa, en tu hogar y apelo a que tu como mamá, papá, continúes trayendo a los niños a Misa cada Domingo, sin falta. El DOMINGO, es el Día del Señor, es el día en donde el pueblo de Dios se reúne para alabarle y pedirle su fuerza para continuar nuestra vida superando todos los obstáculos que ella trae. Dios quiere estar contigo, con tu familia en tu hogar, ábrele la puerta. Seguir a Cristo no siempre es fácil, pero Él nos da la fortaleza para hacerlo, cuando tú decides seguirle. Te invito a que perseveres en el amor de Dios. Solo en Él encontraremos la verdadera felicidad, lo que tú quieres para tus hijos/as.

ÁMENSE UNOS A OTROS El domingo pasado escuchamos el familiar pasaje del Evangelio de san Juan en el que Jesús usa el símbolo de la viña y las ramas. En ese pasaje escuchamos que si permanecemos en Cristo daremos mucho fruto. El Evangelio de hoy nos dice cuál es ese fruto: el amor. La segunda lectura con el Evangelio crean un gran himno de amor. El coro de este himno es sencillo –Dios nos ama tanto que envió a Jesús al mundo para que tuviéramos vida. El Señor Jesús que nos dijo la semana pasada que permaneciéramos en él, esta semana nos dice que permanezcamos en su amor. En un mundo marcado por las divisiones y el terrorismo, las últimas palabras del Evangelio de hoy son un gran reto: “Esto es lo que les mando: que se amen los unos a los otros”.

VENTA DE ROSA EL DIA DE LAS MADRES
El día 10 de mayo celebramos a todas nuestras madrecitas. El Ministerio de Pro-Vida estará vendiendo rosas después de las misas del sábado, 9 y domingo 10 de mayo. Las donaciones son para continuar apoyando los servicios que promueven la vida en las varias clínicas del condado. También para apoyar a mujeres que por cualquier situación están necesitadas durante el tiempo de embarazo. Gracias por apoyar y decir SI a la vida por medio de su donación.
¡Además, puede ofrecer una flor a su esposa, mamá, hermana, tía, etc.!
