FEBRUARY 16, 2020 - 3 - SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ones. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children. Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM—prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement

on Friday afternoon. This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn signing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B.S. Is done. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian church. Please use large double door at the side entrance. The Associate Minister unveiled the church’s new campaign slogan last Sunday: ‘I Upped My Pledge—Up Yours.’

Thank God for church ladies with typewriters. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services: The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus Walks on the Water.’ The sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus.’ Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say “Hell’ to someone who doesn’t care much about you. Don’t let worry kill you off—let the church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang ‘I will not pass this way again,’ giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be ‘What is Hell?’ Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older

My deepest thanks to all parishioners of St. Timothy parish for all you do to increase charity and to take on sacrifice. Fr. Ed

OUR CATHOLIC APPEAL 2020 – A T R

Over the past few weeks, we have prayed about, thought about and talked about the ministries

supported by Our Catholic Appeal. Now it is time for all of us to share a portion of our treasure, so these ministries can continue. If you received your 2020 Our Catholic Appeal packet in the mail and made your pledge, thank you. If you have not yet made your pledge, please consider doing so today. By supporting the ministries of our diocese, every parish, including our own, is better equipped to carry out the work of Christ. Our parish goal is $642,284. Once we achieve our goal, the majority of the additional funds will be returned to our parish to support our own special needs. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

You may now include shredded paper with your recycling. We do request that you please not put phone books, cardboard, paper or plastic bags in the bins.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

St. Vincent de Paul Society in conjunction with the Back Pack Program has begun to collect “Box Tops for Education.” These coupons may be found on many

items, especially General Mills cereals, Progresso Soups, etc. For a complete list of products, go to www.boxtops4education.com/earn/participating-products. All you have to do is clip the coupons and bring them to church to be dropped in the bags attached to the food collection boxes. Dollars raised from these box tops will support the Fruitland Park Elementary School. Your support of this program is appreciated. Please clip the coupons (sample above), not a box top. We collect the coupons all year long. Thank you.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - 8 - FEBRUARY 16, 2020

VENERABLE ARCHBISHOP FULTON J SHEEN ON GOD: “In 397, or twelve years after his conversion, Augustine wrote his Confessions, the greatest spiritual autobiography ever written. It is the work of a teacher who explains, a philosopher who thinks, a theologian who instructs, a poet who achieves

chaste beauty in the writing, , and a mystic who pours out thanks for having found himself in peace. None of the Freuds or Jungs or Adlers of our generation ever pierced the conscious and unconscious mind with a rapier as keen as Augustine’s. No man can say he has ever understood himself if he has not read the Confessions of St. Augustine.

PLANT THE SEEDS OF LOVE

Are we ready to die for our friends? Maybe not yet. But St. Augustine shows us where the seeds of that perfect love can start to grow in us. Where does love begin. Listen for a moment. You’ve already heard the very end, the perfection of love. The very measure of it is what the Lord has set before us in the Gospel. “Greater love has no man then this”, he says, “that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) But you’re asking yourselves, “when will it be possible for us to have that kind of love?” Don’t despair of yourself too soon. Perhaps it is born and not yet perfect. Nourish it, so that you won’t starve. But you say to me, “and how am I supposed to recognize it?” We’ve heard the perfection of love; now let us hear when it begins. John goes on to say, “But if any one has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet close his heart against him, how does Gods love abide in him? “ (1John 3:17). Here is where love begins! If you’re not yet up to dying for your brother, you can still be up to giving what you have to your brother.

-St. Augustine, Homily 5 on the First Epistle of John, 12

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . . How should I be developing my perfect love? Am I making an effort to show Christian love according to my ability?

CLOSING PRAYER Father, teach me to share good things you have given me, and fill my heart with a desire for justice for every human being.

CATECHISM CORNER: HOW TO EAT AN ELEPHANT

ONE BITE AT A TIME

Article 26 of our Catholic Catechism: Faith is man’s response to God, who reveals himself and gives himself to man, at the same time bringing man to a superabundant light, as he searches for the ultimate meaning of life.

REFLECTION.

Every act of faith, every religious thought, every prayer and act of charity is really a reaction. God has initiated everything. Any search for ultimate meaning must begin and end with God.

PRAYER.

Lord, open our eyes and flood them with your light so that we may see the many ways in which you reveal yourself.

PRAYER ON YOUR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

O God, we thank you that you have given us another year of life together. We thank you for the love which grows more

precious and for the bonds which grow more close each day. We thank you for the happiness we have known together; for the sorrows we have faced together; for all the experiences of sunshine and of

shadow through which we have come, up to today.

We ask for forgiveness for any failure on our part; for any times when we became difficult to live with; for any lack of sympathy and understanding; for anything which spoiled even for a moment the perfect relationship which marriage should be. Spare us to each other to go on walking the way of life together, and grant that for us it may be true that the best is yet to be: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
