Blessed Francisco Marto & Blessed Jacinta Marto,

the Children of Fatima

Feast Day: February 20th

Please say the family rosary and ask our Blessed Mother for peace in the world.

Dear Parishioners,

You may have already received the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Blase Cardinal Cupich. I ask that you reflect on the many gifts God has given you and ask you to consider your continued support for the works of the Archdiocese in this year’s Annual Appeal. Every year, many of you have responded to the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing. On behalf of those served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts.

This year, the theme of the Appeal is Come Follow Me...and share the Word. God provides each of us with many gifts. We have the responsibility not only to recognize these gifts but also to nurture them. Any funds raised are carefully spent; it is money for God’s work, and we use it ac-cordingly. Your contributions are deeply appreciated, very much needed and make a real differ-ence in the lives of many.

As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, Archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2019 Annual Catholic Ap-peal. When our parish reaches its goal in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. (Please remember it was this program that gave us the matching funds that enables us to eliminate our parish debt seven years ago.)

Many thanks to all those who bought and sold tickets for our Parish Raffle. Your participation in our raffle supports our school, religious education program, athletics, and the ministries here at St. Alexander. Following is a list of this year’s winners.

God Bless,

Father Marty

MERCY HOME SUNDAY MASS

9:30AM on WGN-TV Channel 9

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

When we think of the word Beatitude we think of today ’s discourse from Luke ’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John ’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal bless-ings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the Blessed, for they are the ones who lived the blessed life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude!

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collec-tion. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time.

Each pledge makes a difference because all par-ishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word”.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Many of you may take advantage of the conven-ience of electronic giving to our parish and we are grateful for that. For those of you who have yet to join us in giving online, we strongly encourage you to do so. Here’s why:

Faith Direct enables parishioners to make your Church contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or through your credit/debit card. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door. Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition payments.

Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection basket. To cancel your monthly envelopes, please notify the parish office at 708-448-4861. This is not done automatically when signing up for electronic giving.

Please visit www.faithdirect.net to enroll secure-ly online. Or, download the Faith Direct app onto your smartphone. Our parish code is IL910.
